While I'm not surprised about this happening, what disgusts me about the whole episode is that our mainstream media sent correspondents over to Italy to cover the verdict live and led their newscasts with this story. Meanwhile, thousands of people jammed Wall Street and the Brooklyn Bridge in protest to all those investment bankers ruining the economy, and while this story is grabbing huge headlines around the world and is being covered extensively by the BBC and CBC, there's nary a peep about this on the nightly news reports here.

Reminds me of Clinton. The obsession of the America media and people about his affair really had an impact on the world. Everybody thought it was so funny that the American people obsessed about an affair in stead of the real politics that were implemented. Everybody gets what they deserve I guess.

Does anyone else in this thread have actual information that somehow is lost on the jury (which consisted of at least 2 judges)?
I don't know much about this story, but I keep hearing all these stalwart protestations about what is or isn't happening. Odd, but I never heard about this bitch until just now. Where was the self righteous indignation you all spout before!?!? | |

Prisons are filled with Caucasians convicted of murder. 2. A criminal trial and/or appeal is not a quest for the truth. It is a rule-based process whereby the state attempts to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt using admissible evidence. If for some reason the evidence is not available or admissible (for example, because of doubts about cross contamination), then the defendant must be acquitted or their conviction overturned. This means that sometimes people "get away with it", but that is the price we (ie: in "the West") pay for having a civilised and relatively humane criminal justice system. There is a saying - "Better that 100 guilty men go free than 1 innocent man be convicted". Her conviction and successful appeal proves nothing more than something went wrong somewhere. It's not so surprising she was convicted and held in jail for 4 years, it's actually more surprising that the verdict was overturned on appeal.
Italy's court system is not known for doing such things.
