So....How Has Prejudice Affected Your World?

I am referring to Prejudice of:

Skin Color

Sexual Preference

Religious Beliefs

Gender [or lack thereof]

Mac vs. PC Users

Coke vs. Pepsi

Name Brand vs. Off Brand [Foods, dry goods, shoes, electronics, heath products, etc.]

Political Stances

Vegans vs. Carnivores

Pro PETA vs. Anti-PETA

Pro anal vs. Anti Anal

Sewn in Weaves vs. Lace Fronts

Pro War vs. Anti War

Cable vs. Satellite

Day Lovers vs. Night Lovers

Titty vs. Ass [which do you prefer] wars

$ vs. Big Dick wars

Old People vs. Young People

....I'm pretty sure there are other things we put against each other, but this is all I could think of at the moment. How has this affected, or ruined your world????

As a white guy in Thailand, and with a wife who's Thai, I've experienced my share of racism and even harrassment, being told I've stoled Thai mens's womans but then conversely having to endure constant references to my nappy dugout.

Is it weird or tough living in Thailand?

Oh, my bad. lol

A few ways would be:

-my white prejudiced grandmother (may she r.i.p.) not wanting to have anything to do with me even though I was the first grandchild, because I'm Rican. fart

-Being treated differently due to sexual orientation on a person to person level as well as the rights we're still fighting for (I know it's about race, but you have that listed, maybe you mean prejudice in general more than racism)

-My mother in law and I did not speak for over a year and had a HUGE extended blowout over her racist ways and behavior she was tolerating from a friend of hers who I banned from our home. She's better now, though there is still some ignorance (not malice) there.

Not tough, no. Maybe a little weird sometimes. Some ppl will make assumptions about pretty much any foreigner and his Thai wife, and I do get treated differently in some ways. Stared at too, in non-touristy areas, and there are certain stereotypical assumptions that affect both me and my wife where we live. For example, she's had random ppl in the village ask her why she doesn't wear any gold seeing as they've seen she has a white husband. She's just expected to look and dress differently because of it. I'm supposed to do this and that and lawd knows what, including teach everyone's kids to speak English, naturally, since I'm a white guy. lol They're almost offended when I say no to them.

It's irritating sometimes, but nothing that holds me back in any major way, thankfully, but it is very much racism in some instances where as a white guy you're treated differently, to your benefit or detriment.

You know what? I've always looked at the two [rasicm & prejudice] in the same light. But because you've just said that. I think I "will" change racism to prejudice in the the title. lol

That shit sucks though... sad

As a childfree, minimum wage, exuberant, loose, flirty, real, self-qualified girl I experienced the worst and most hypocritical form of prejudice and rejection from people defining their identity from their job, from their companies or from their resume and erecting having kids, getting married, graduated and close to family as a norm. I thought those people liked me for what I really am and looked further than appearances, they didn't. It affected me so much that I wanted to die.

I'm not sure they know any different. They have to defend their self made image and probably see MarySharon as a threat to their self image and anything that feels threatened will attack. The mind loves to dominate other minds, make itself right and make others wrong. That goes for you, MarySharon and myself.

My parents bought their house in 1978. At the time, there were maybe 5 Hispanic families within a 25-mile radius. I recognize now that many of my quirks stem from the fact that I identified as being "white" even though my outward appearance (and the way people treat me) screams "Mexican-Pakistani".

People always were incredulous when I'd say that I only had 1 brother and that we owned our own home (I mean, don't ALL Mexicans have 12 kids and live in a basement apartment?).

People always ask me "How long have you been here?" not really believing that the only river I've ever crossed was the Hudson River.

shrug

In college, I wholeheartedly embraced my Hispanic heritage...I dusted off my dad's record collection, I sprinkled my vocabulary with Spanglish, and began to actively seek anything having to do with Latino culture (food, art, music, etc.).

Yet...at heart I'm still a gringo. And my kids are certified coconuts. razz

When one is considered as a threat you steer clear of it right then and there. You don't "pretend", you don't play the game of friendship during 8 years and you don't make fun of the person behind her back. Maybe I would have been the one to run away first If I had known but I wasn't in the best condition to distinguish what was real friendship and what wasn't.

People pretend all the time. Another hallmark of a mind that wants to dominate another is that it is inauthentic.

MarySharon I totally understand your experience having been there myself. But each person has different levels of trust you can give them. Just remember that people must earn your trust.

I am still consistently faced with the self absorbed malicious people who generally don't care for other people unless there is some self interest in it (like sex/money/power). Most people you meet in this world are not authentic by any means. They pretend to be-but they are not.

I have an aunt for example that always has something negative to say about my mom. All these negative comments are just there to mask her jealousy of my mother. I believe if you have to talk behind peoples backs-you are most likely one of those inauthentic people.
