This one definitely needs to be filed under Gone Too Soon. Former college basketball star Chauncey Hardy has gone to the big hoop in the sky after being savagely beaten in a Romanian bar, where he moved to play professionally.
Former Sacred Heart guard Chauncey Hardy died after being attacked in a bar in Romania.
Romanian Basketball Federation chief Carmen Tocala told GSP radio that Hardy died Sunday, suffering two heart attacks following his beating Saturday night.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a fine young man who had his life cut short at such a young age while he was overseas doing something he loved,” Sacred Heart Athletic Director C. Donald Cook said in a statement.
Police spokeswoman Mirela Gheta said the 23-year-old Hardy had severe head injuries and was in a coma when he was admitted to the hospital.
Hardy died shortly after undergoing surgery in a Bucharest hospital.
Hardy played for CSS Giurgiu in southern Romania and was celebrating a victory over rival Dinamo Bucharest in Giurgiu when several men were reported to have attacked him.
“This is a terrible tragedy and we are saddened as a University and a basketball program,” Sacred Heart men’s basketball coach Dave Bike said in a statement. “This is not just about a basketball player, but the person as well. It transcends what happens on a basketball court. We feel tremendous sadness and loss for Chauncey’s family and those who were close to him.”
Hardy averaged 12.5 points for Sacred Heart in 2009-10.

Truly sad.
However...this is how CBS is reporting it;
(CBS/AP) BUCHAREST, Romania - A man was arrested Monday in the killing of Chauncey Hardy, a former college basketball player at Sacred Heart in Connecticut who prosecutors say was punched in the face by the boyfriend of a woman Hardy was with in a bar.
Ionut Adrian Tanasoaia surrendered to police and will be in custody for 29 days while he awaits trial. He is accused of beating up Hardy in a bar in the southern Romanian city of Giurgiu on Saturday night.
Hardy died shortly after surgery Sunday in Bucharest. The 23-year-old player sustained severe head injuries and was in a coma when admitted to the hospital in Giurgiu. This is where he played for CSS Giurgiu and was celebrating a victory over rival Dinamo Bucharest.
Hardy was punched after he playfully put his cap on a woman's head prosecutors said. They added that the woman's boyfriend objected to the gesture and Hardy tried to show he didn't understand Romanian. Tanasoaia then allegedly punched Hardy on the chin and he fell to the ground.
A preliminary autopsy revealed a massive hemorrhage and broken skull. Giugiu County Hospital Spokeswoman Elisabeta Bene said Monday that doctors initially suspected Hardy was in a coma because he had been drinking. She said his condition deteriorated a few hours later and he was transferred to a hospital in Bucharest, 38 miles from Giurgiu.
Romania's health ministry Monday ordered an inquiry to determine whether emergency procedures had been followed. Hardy, who arrived in Romania in August, was a guard at Sacred Heart from 2006 to 2010.
"This is not just about a basketball player, but the person as well," Sacred Heart head basketball coach Dave Bike said in a statement Sunday. "It transcends what happens on a basketball court. We feel tremendous sadness and loss for Chauncey's family and those who were close to him."
If he truly fell back after being punched in the face and fractured his skull - as opposed to being "savagely beaten" then it's a whole different spin on things.
Truly, truly sad either way.
A young man's life over in an instant. Over nonsense.

'cuz when reading that story, I wasn't thinking "damn all that over a piece of ass"...I was thinking as a parent "damn you raise a kid and see him excel and he goes off to make a better life for himself and he dies over a piece of ass."

Whatever happened to just cussing people out? We have to resort to physical violence and end a person's life? Its not like he grabbed her ass or something. Jeez. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

You don't remember THIS thug from last year???
The hulking Serbian college basketball player who beat a Brooklyn-born schoolmate within an inch of his life and then fled to his home country was sentenced to 27 months yesterday for the 2008 assault, which sparked a diplomatic crisis.
Miladin Kovacevic, the 24-year-old, 6-foot-9 former player for Binghamton University, was sentenced in Belgrade as part of a September plea deal that requires him to testify against the Serbian diplomats who helped him escape by giving him an emergency passport and paying his $100,000 bail.
Kovacevic's light sentence enraged the family of 135-pound Bryan Steinhauer, 24, who was left brain-damaged in the May 2008 barroom beating and is still recovering.
The family called the plea deal a "coverup."
"[The] exceptionally light sentence pales in comparison to the pain and suffering he has caused Bryan Steinhauer and his family. Two years of punishment doesn't come close to fitting the crime," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, who helped make Kovacevic's case a sore point in Serbian-US relations.

This is what gets me...dude is 6'-9", 260lbs.
His girl gets hit on by this skinny little Jewish kid listed at 135lbs before the beating.
Are you so damned insecure that you consider him a threat???? OR are you so damned anti-Semite that you take this opportunity to unleash your rage and beat this Jewish kid to within an inch of his life?

Definitely the latter. There is some major hatred against jews and blacks in Eastern Europe which is strange considering that many of those same countries were shat upon by Hitler and his Reich at one time or had genocide brewing in their nations among their own countrymen. I mean is there no end to the ugliness and do these people not feel any shame? Its sad that one can be so racists and wish to do bodily harm yet come from a country where their people were victimized or looked down upon because of something benign such as race/ethnicity? If you're prejudice then that's one thing, not everyone will get along, but to take matters to the point of murder is just evil and goes beyond mere prejudice. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY.
