Going on my first cruise and need tips! In three weeks I am going on my first cruise with a pal I KNOW there has to be ways to cut costs on the shore excursions or things I should bring with me.
I heard alcohol is expensive on the ship, is this true?
Any advice, just in general about the experience would be helpful...thanks orgers! [Edited 12/5/11 7:46am]

I'm pretty sure johnart knows the price of alcohol anywhere in the world. He should be along shortly. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I went on a cruise a lil over a year ago...it was awesome. I don't recall the alcohol being any more expensive as most clubs/bars. BUT I really only drank beers. Everything else is included in the price you pay for the room so paying for drinks alone isn't so bad...BUT it can creep up on ya.
cut costs on shore excursions....don't go on any.
watch the weather.

On one cruiseline, they have restrictions on alcohol that you can bring with you. They also charge a $15.00/US fee per bottle on what you bring, which, I think, was limited to champagne.
Ships have restaurants and clubs onboard that are not included in the "all inclusive" deal, so watch out for those. They are pushed as being "nicer" than the other restaurants/clubs on board and "great for a special evening" etc, but they are pricey and the food in the included places is just as good.
If you don't want the price of the excursions, research the places you'll be stopping and see what there is to see. Do your own thing, just be back in plenty of time to board the ship or do like Shorty said, just go to the beaches.
Hope you have a great time and that you don't get the atomic runs.

Don't jump over the railing without a large flotation device. The chances of a cruise ship knowing you're missing, stopping and turning around in time to rescure you before you freeze to death or drown are pretty slim.

We went last Dec on our first one...
1. The only drinks included were juices, lemonade, coffee and tea. Soda can be expensive also. We bought a weekly all you can drink pass for soda for about $50 at the beginning.
2. Excursions are PRICEY....pick one that you really want to do. There is always shopping and site seeing at the ports. Also, look for off-line excursions. Just be back on time.
3. Check out the late night comedy acts...hit the club and dance, stay up late.
4. Check off dinner for 6....in case you don't like one couple, you can talk to the other couple.
5. If you have extra cash, get a massage....we had a couples massage and, let's just say, we missed dinner that night...
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I've been on two cruises, and I had a blast both times! I don't know how people lost weight, because I think I gained 10 lbs! Make sure U take advantage of the dining room meals. The food is 1st class! Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Room service is also great as well as the all day buffets. Also know that gratuity is automatically added to your bill. If U like, before U check out U can dispute that at the front desk and tip your attendants in cash instead. But, the service really is top notch, so U just might let it be. U will never have to want for anything. The alcohol isn't really that much more expensive than if U were to go clubbing. But I do suggest that U purchase things duty free. I had paid $40 for 4 bottles of various flavored rum. Which was a great deal! Have a great time and take lots of pictures!!! I expect to see them! If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Just be sure that you get back to the ship in PLENTY of time. Or the ship will leave you.
It happened to someone I know through a forum. The tourist bus broke down on the wrong side of the island. They got left behind... they had to charter a plan to fly to the next port of call to rejoin the ship. If you are on a ship sponsored excursion they WILL wait for you if you are delayed... but not on a private excursion "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack
