NCAA college conference consolidation crisis continues It appears what remains of the Bix XII Conference is on the verge of collapse, and the Big East Conference may follow. It was announced today that Syracuse University and the University of Pittsburgh will be leaving the Big East Conference and joining the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Meanwhile, on the verge of Texas A&M joining the Southeast Conference (SEC) next season, final negotiations are going on for the universities of Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech to join the Pac-12 Conference to form the Pac-16 Superconference.

College athletics are following the same consolidation trends other industries have in the last several decades. Like "diplomatic immunity" in Lethal Weapon 2, the NCAA keeps the antitrust exemption in its back pocket to allow it to pull off mergers and acquisitions that would otherwise be regulated by the federal and state authorities.
