Eyes Wide Shut

This movie i had not seen in awhile. Me & my roommate watched it and it's so fascinating because i think in any town[Especially here where i live in LA] That type of weird underground crap is known. It's one of the those thing's that is whispered about but only few see. I know this type of thing goes on, and the truth about what sexual fantasies can do for someone. And cause them to do fascinates me, the hardcore Kubrick fans used to give this movie shit. As someone who has seen every Kubrick film i think it is a masterpiece, A Dark, brooding sense of the human psyche and the deepest sexual desires.

What do others think of the film?

I din't mind the movie but not sure I'd say it's a masterpiece.

Also I don't think all this stuff is necessarily so "underground" or "weird". I mean, maybe in the sense that stuff beyond 1-on-1 is not really spoken of freely but I think it's in just about every town and street of the good ole USofA.

I don't think its a masterpiece, certainly not by Kubrick's standards. I've never believed any of the tension that's supposed to be building. It always feels very dry to me - a little slow, getting near boring in a couple places. Also, the casting of Cruise/Kidman has always felt a bit gimmicky to me. They probably could have found a different actor and actress to better fit the parts.

All that being said, I do still enjoy the movie. My favorite part of it from the Kubrickian angle is that nearly every shot is done in primary colors. Watch the movie with that in mind and its a trip. Red, blue or yellow dominates a majority of the scenes/shots.

I didn't quite get the vibe of it when I saw it in the theater, but I really enjoy it now. I dunno how common it is for mayors, governors, presidents, and CEO's to get together to gangbang in mansions and theatrical masks as well burn incense and follow a ringleader in red robes while listening to a hindi prayer backwards.... lol

I agree with cerebus, the casting of hollywood's it couple at the time, ruined the movie for me. Nicole does well enough, but Tom just out of place.

I loved it. I liked the Kidman flashback scenes, they were so seedy. The overall plot flow was very enjoyable and well shot.

I looove Kubrick and remember seeing this on the big screen but I found this ass-numbingly long and dull and couldn't connect to it in any way. My sister loved it however. This might be a stretch for some but I was bugged by the obvious fake New York - it kinda reminded me of Graffiti Bridge in it's fake street scene-ness.

Those are real New York streets--Greenwich Village specifically. I've walked past them. lol

I actually bought the limited edition Kubrick blu-ray boxed set when it came out, but Eyes Wide Shut was not a big selling point in that decision. I'd seen it on dvd on a tiny tv years before, and thought it was okay, but wasn't exactly looking forward to it being the final film in my little 'Kubrick Film Festival'.

However...

In high-definition, on a big tv with great sound, it really takes on a life I wasn't aware of before. I'm looking forward to watching it again! My only complaint was, actually, how their child was written - just a typical cardboard child character, spouting lines like, "Mommy, can I have a pony for Christmas?", and blah blah blah. Parents in insane situations such as these tend to look to their own children for a link back to reality, so having a child who was written more like a human being would have helped. razz

I love this movie. I watch it almost every year at Christmastime. I think it's a fascinating study of how too much honesty can sabotage a relationship. And that last line--excellent.

I've never been interested. I just didn't 'feel' any sexual tension between Kidman/Cruise. I think Kidman is a superb actress, however, she just lacks sexappeal.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I thought it was a good movie, though I got a bit confused in parts.

I thought Cruise's choice of Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, and Minority Report were all good movies.

Vanilla sky was a bit clumbsy in the end, but I still liked it, being a sci-fi buff.

Although I did like Eyes Wide Shut, for some reason I just think it was a movie Edward Norton was born to star in. lol

Eh, a lot of people don't like it. But i think it's a masterpiece, you don't have to. but as a huge Kubrick fan i think it's a great film.

And the casting didn't bug me that much, but as much as people hate Tom Cruise now of course there going to say it was bad casting.

lol With the family, I hope!

I like Eyes Wide Shut, I am not sure it is great, but I like how it is subtly weird. I am not talking about the ritual, I mean the question as to whether the whole thing is a dream or not.

It's not perfect, but I like both of the leads. Nicole Kidman doesn't play stoned perfectly IMO, but she is great and sexy in this one. Tom Cruise is definitely not one of my favorites, but when he's cast right he does just fine.

There are very few movies that I and my family both like much less holiday films. lol Along with Eyes Wide Shut, I like to watch Morvern Callar, In Bruges, Un conte de Noël and Nadja every December--not exactly their taste. They don't mind Batman Returns though.
