Should YouTube disable its comments?

I'm starting to get tired and rather angry at all the bad grammar, racism, sexism, hate and downright lunacy of people who comment on youtube videos. Either someone is starting a flame war or they want to promote their lunatic political views, race views. Maybe it would be better to disable comments on it or at least monitor hateful ones.

Especially on topics like Israel, it doesn't help that nazis and anti-semites can muddy the honest debate.

And, maybe Prince would be more open to posting videos there if the hate wasn't so extreme..lol

You shouldn't read the comments.

Most of them, like 90%, are full of trolls looking for reactions.

I stopped reading them a long time ago, it's just the same meaningless petty sniping bullshit that gets posted in PM&M.

I do however think that racist and extreme hateful comments should be removed and the perpetrators dealt with accordingly, but then it would depend on people reporting such comments, can you do that on youtube?

the racism and hate are pretty sad to see. other than that, it's fair game. But I realize you can't keep one group quiet and allow the others access. It's all or none, I guess. I'll vote for all and just ignore the bullshit.

I stopped reading them for the most part, it's too tedious to wade thru all that crap most of which doesn't make sense, the grammer generally is so bad, and it just gets boring, fast. there are some gems on occasion, though, so I'd hate to see the comments completely disabled but I can see why some are.

well honestly i couldn't argue strongly for it due to the excess trolling but it is fun to get a taste of varying views on a subject, it gives one a different prespective sometimes or to get answers to questions from whoever created or posted the video can be interesting and informative.

I would not mind a youtube without comments.

I get the "not wanting to stifle free speech" argument, but Youtube is about videos, if you want to make racist comments you can come here smile

nod I actually don't mind reading some of the comments. Some of them are actually pretty amusing (except for when people start flaming each other). lol

I'm not sure. On one hand I think people should be able to say what they want even if it is ugly, which often its not because its a small minority of immature nutjobs getting their jollies off behind the keyboard. On the other hand, when things get so out of hand that people make threats such as beating/killing someone or hacking accounts then i think there at least needs to be a moderator that you can complain to. Wait....isn't there one? Maybe I'm confused with that ranking button that shows whether you like the comment or not.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Absolutely I think they should be disabled. There's so many horrible things on there that really have the potential for greater harm. Allowing such negative and hateful comments, particularly when it comes to racist and similar attacks on the so-called "minorities", not only makes the commenter look bad but also the company that allows it in the name of "free speech".

The fact that some of the things written are so hate-filled that they would pass as a hate crime in real life is disturbing, especially since the site itself allows relative anonymity. Through youtube and similar sites we're fostering a new culture of acceptance of this sort of thing. A whole generation of kids have now grown up thinking it's perfectly OK to spew hate as long as you do it anonymously.

Youtube comments have driven some people to suicide, for fuck's sake. Something should be done.

If you don't believe me just look up "gay persian men" on youtube and you'll see the kind of things I mean. According to the comments, they all deserve to die. pissed

Freedom of speech...?

In all seriousness, check out the reader boards on the NY Daily News and NY Post websites, and it's all the same. All racist, all the time, towards every color and creed.

Blacks, Jews, Latinos, all get routinely bashed in the most stereotypical manner possible.

The person who posts the video can chose whether or not they want to turn the comments off already.

Also, YouTube is no different than a million other places on teh internets. Haters will hate.

My take: Free Speech heart should rule, on the Net & in the real world.

If there's hate in this world, I want to make sure that I am aware of it too, so I can make appropriate decisions/form informed opinions for myself, based on all the information there is out there.

People are free to choose what they read, consume, focus their attention on & retain, free to select, edit, and delete from their brains the info they do not want to keep. neutral

But give me the full, whole world, not an edited, censored one - esp. edited by others lol
