APPLES!

'Tis the season for most on my side of the planet for apples. A seasonal favorite... pies, spreads, and even entrees... what are your favorites and how do you like your apples?

I wanna get some new recipes too biggrin foodnow

My faves? Pink Lady, Gala, Empire and Cortlands to eat right off the tree when ever possible.

I hate anything mealy or bitter but the sourness of Granny Smiths make it a good canidate for baking stuffed and those little rounded McIntosh are good in pies.

What are your faves and why? How do you like to serve em' up and eat them?

and MY favorite.....

eek cool

I love the flavor of Cortlands... do they cook well? Do you think they'll make a good pie? I need to learn how to make apple butter. I love using the spread on all types of pastries and coupling with warm cider.

I wish I could get the Cortlands and Pink Ladys every day... some apples are seasonal in my area.

Red delicious, Granny Smith, and Gala are available year round inmy area. My kids love those.

I like apples that are like me - hard and tart. lol

My favorite variety is Earliblaze. Haralsons are also good. I usually buy these from local growers at farmer's markets.

My favorite supermarket apple is Pink Lady. If those aren't available, I'll do Granny Smith (always reliable).

I really detest soft, mushy, mealy, sweet apples. Red Delicious is my all-time least favorite. I think they're awful.

One of my fave fall time snacks is to slice the apples fairly thin, and sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar and a little clove...and dehydrate them in my dehydrator... drool

I dont hate apples but they are probably my least fave fruit.. I dont know why because they taste good, but i never find myself reaching for an apple UNLESS I have dehydrated it!!

Red Delicious was always my favorite.

I stopped eating them b/c my ex hated them and would never buy them.

My next-fav are the Granny Smith.

They took extra time to cook down BUT that is okay by me ...their flavor is worth it !!

I don't like softer apples that cook to mush in pies or other dishes so take that in mind ! I think thick sliches of cortlands makes a GREAT firm pie

biggrin

I was just checking out Apples and Apple Varieties the other day. Trying to find a different local orchard than the one I usually go to cause they seem to only have Macs....which tend to turn to mush when attempting to make an apple crisp. One thing I learned was that Macs are usually ready first, so I'm a wait another week before I go a pickin' smile

check out this link...VERY good website on ALL things apples.

You would have to bring up the one thing about New England I will miss, Apple picking. The sound of teeth biting into an extra crispy and extra juicy apple is almost erotic to me. (what is all this applekissing stuff? back to google I guess pc )

Braeburns when I want tart and Fuji when I want sweet.

Last year a new variety showed up in the stores, but the name escapes me for the moment it ranks number one in texture and taste, I wonder if it was a new hybrid of somekind.

I've never tasted the GrapeApples that they've had on display 4 to a container cause its just a little too expense for something I may end up not liking
