US Open 2011

So, today begins the US Open 2011.

I guess we tennis fans think Djokovic is the favourite. But I don't think one can discard Nadal, Federer and Murray.

Nadal has been playing his worst summer season, but he usually gives his best in the Grand Slams, so we can expect a better performance. Also, he has always performed better in 5 sets-matches than in the ones of only 3 sets. After being beaten by Novak five times this year, he has to prove he's as mentally strong as ever.

Federer has been considered dead several times in the past, and he had proved critics wrong. It's difficult to say if he still has chances of winning a Grand Slam; according to his Roland Garros performance this year, I think he still has it.

And Murray... the perpetual runner-up? He is always at his best on hard court, and has recently won Cincinatti. With Rafa and Roger not in their best moment, he sure has his chances here.

Apart from these four, I think only Tsonga can be a serious candidate. He's making a good season and performs his best tennis on hard court. Mardy Fish... very good summer season, he plays at home... but I don't think he has the level (specially the mentality) to win a Major. I'd like to think other Spanish players also have chances of winning, but Ferrer, Verdasco, Almagro... can make a good tournament, but none of them has at this moment the level required to win a Major.

Any tennis lovers in the org? What do you think of this year's US Open?

McEnroe-Lendl matches were a substantial part of my childhood... As much as I liked McEnroe, Lendl was my favourite...

Sadly, I missed the Bjorg-McEnroe rivalry, I was too young. I discovered tennis when McEnroe-Lendl was the main rivalry.

I love how tennis is about individuals face to face, it has a lo to do with mental strength and charisma. These players we are mentioning are myths indeed. Nowadays we have other great rivalries...

nod The first tennis match I ever watched on TV was the McEnroe-Conners semifinals in Wimbledon 1980, but I only started to watch it towards the end of the match. So the first match that I saw completely from start to finish was the McEnroe-Borg Wimbledon 1980 final worship.

Wow! What a way to start! Beginning that way, no wonder you aren't interested in tennis now. Who can beat that? lol Wimbledon 2008 final, when Nadal won Federer, may be a contender, though.

Exactly, it was the perfect start biggrin. That 4th set tie-break, I still remember the atmosphere that you could feel on TV too worship.

Ladies' tennis is crazy these last years... Who knows. Number 1 and 2, Wozniacki and Zvonareva, have never won a Major and I don't think they will this time. I would go for Maria Sharapova, who has been improving lately after her injury, Chinese Na Li and Petra Kvitova, the last Wimbledon winner.

It's crazy indeed. There's not a player who really stands out. Wozniacki has been several months number one because she is very regular, but in the Majors she always disappoints.

Sharapova has won her first round match against a teeny brit with a lot of trouble... confused However, I still think she can do it.

I want Federer to win. I'd like him to get a few more.

I know Djokovic is great, but he's a douche. I hope he doesn't win.

It would be cool if Nadal won, but I really enjoy enjoy watching him on clay. He looks uncomfortable on all other surfaces. Plus, I don't really want him to get closer to Federer in the Major wins total. lol

Nope. I don't think Murray will ever win.

I like Tsonga. I also like Monfils. Not sure either of them will get the win this year. Maybe in the next couple, though.

Serena (seeded 28) has to be favourite after winning Stanford and Toronto. I thought the Wimbledon champ Kvitova might give Serena some trouble if she was on her game but she lost her first round match already. Sharapova hasn't beaten Serena in something like 6 years. As long as Serena is ready for Azarenka in the 3rd round, she'll be hard to stop.

Mens is interesting. If Djokovic's shoulder holds up, he's the champ. It's probably the best opportunity for Murray to step up as long as he can keep his head together (which he probably can't). Another Federer vs Nadal for old times sake would always be welcome.

I didn't know Kvitova was out. That's the problem with ladies these days. No big name seems to be regular enough.

Serena has of course her chances. She's on her way down, but she surely can win.

Unless Murray ever gets a slam draw fall extremely kindly for him, which is very remote hope, he'll always be sapped by the best of 5setters. Add to that the fact he can't suffer a single blow when leading a match without it totally and irreparably destroying his confidence and I think we can discount him ever winning a slam.

Anyway, I hope Federer wins it. I think Djokovic will win it.

I agree that Murray has a big mentality problem. But if he wins a Major that can be solved and then he could be really dangerous.

Nobody says Nadal is his favourite. I understand all the love for Federer, but Nadal is an impressive player, and his attitude and mentality is something from which we all can learn. I hope he wins! wink

I think Nadal needs to now start successfully defending titles other than the French, thing is, Djokovic seems to have his number just as he has Federer's. Besides, I think Nadal could usurp Fed's slam record if he start putting away the serbian. Overall, Djokovic has become something of a pest. And I find him a little dull to watch.

I do admire Djokovic having to step up and take on 2 of the very best players ever and he's had to play one of the best seasons ever (57-2!) to take the number 1 spot. He just needs to roll on with this incredible play for another 3-4 years and he can start being mentioned with the same affection as Rafa and Roger.

And not go back to being a pouting, douche face, "oh I'm injured" quiter if he starts losing. How quickly people forget.

nod

I think he's moved through that now. The mental confidence and strength he got from winning the Davis Cup and changes in his diet was like a light switched on for him. He carries himself like a champion instead of an also-ran *cough-Andy-Murray-cough*
