I don't see any problem with cursing... these words exist to be used! Used sparingly they can have an impact. Never understood Prince's weird obsession with removing the bad language from his music recently...

That said, I tend to only use such language in the company of other men... I watch my language when talking to a woman or a kid. Except my wife of course, she doesn't count. Where's my fucking dinner, woman!!! smile j/k
I think Prince taking the curse word out of his lyrics was the best thing he did.. nod ...He is way to smart for that..he don't need them to sell records.

I have a problem with parents tolerating their children using bad language. I have a problem with parents using bad language in front of their children.

That being said, I have a serious swearing problem. I don't swear compulsively outloud, but I have a FILTHY keyboard. I don't know why, but it's so easy for the word "fucking" to slip into things that I write...it has a nice flow to it.

In terms of music censorship, I think artists should be free to use any kind of language they want. I grew up listening to Prince and NWA and it didn't warp me...too much, anyway.

I always wondered: who invented cuss words? Who was it that heard the word 'shit' and decided it was a 'bad' word? Or 'fuck' or 'motherfucker'?

Any eytomologists in the house?

Good question...I'm guessing it's because sex and excrement are "bad" things, depending on who you ask. But when we say "shit" or "fuck" we're not really talking about such concretes at all; they are just flavoring words, so...those of you who have problems with cussing in front of children--WHY?! What actual harm is there???

Depending on WHAT variables?

It is a FACT that words (sounds coming out of mouths) only mean what we all decide they mean. As these formerly taboo words are used more frequently, they loose their shock value, which is where much of their impact came from. Once that happens, they are just words like any others.

I don't see how it harms kids, or anyone else, to hear these words.

If you'd like to elaborate on why my statement is "bullshit", please feel free.

Was your post a reaction in general to the question, or was it directed at Haystack's personal methods in his first post in this thread?
