Bad language - your thoughts.

There are some times when I can cuss and swear as bad as the next person (as some of my posts have shown), however this is something that is reserved only for either when I'm extremely annoyed about something or when I'm using cuss/swear words for humourous effect (Usually on the Org). More often than not, in my normal everyday conversation, cuss/swear words (I'll call them vulgar words, from now on) aren't in my vocabulary.

Now there are two situations where I don't use and certainly don't like to hear other people use, vulgar words - In the company of children, and in the company of people who politely make it clear that they don't want to hear such words. After all, much like smoking, you could argue that it pollutes the atmosphere and is unacceptable in certain situations.
Certainly, it annoys me when I hear adults using vulgar words very casually, e.g. 'I was walking down the f***ing road the other day, when this stupid b***d came along...' etc. And again, this is particularly annoying when heard in the company of children - they don't need to learn words like that, certainly not whilst they're still young.

Now maybe I'm being very judgmental here. But I'd be interested to hear how other people view vulgar words and in what situation you feel it's acceptable to use them. Are you okay with people using them? Or do you feel that vulgar words are fine when you are on your own or with people who you know are okay with it, but not something that should be done in public? And would you tell somebody if they were using unacceptable language, that you didn't like it?

I pretty much mirror your example in your first paragraph. And pretty much go by your rules in the second paragraph.

That may sound sarcastic, but I'm serious.

i agree with not cursin around children (tho' i grew up with various family members usin various words all the time), and also a rule of mine is not 2 curse when you're in the presence of family members. nod

other than that, i use "swear" words about 20% of the time when i speak/type. and if ya'll don't believe that, piss off.

I actually swear around my son. I think its important to be myself around him and that includes swearing. It will only be a problem if it is highlighted. As a rule, it is very hard to swear when I am doing things with him... I mean, how can I incorporate 'fuck' into talking about him going down his indoor slide? Or when talking about his tv programmes etc? If I drop something on the floor in the kitchen and make a mess, then I instantly say 'Fuck.'.

I've also learnt something here though. I feel ashamed about all the details, so it will be enough to say that I have pulled myself up on certain behaviour that I have with him involving swearing that I know is not right, so this thread has reminded me of an important unresolved issue. Thank you Haystack. rose

I don't see what the big deal is...they're just words. Plus your kids are inevitably going to use them when they're older anyway. It's not like saying "fuck" hurts anyone or causes brain damage.

I myself am the queen of the potty-mouths... I would rather my child hear me cuss... then hear someone else do so and be all shocked. She knows I don't want to hear it come from her mouth, because she just don't know when it is ok to use, and when it isn't. I see no harm in it. They are going to hear it at some point.

I said shit and she LOOKED at me with these evil eyes and said please dont use that language in front of me. I just looked at here like... uhhh ok... the she burst up laughing at me. She was just joking. but looked serious as shit. It made me really stop and think ... shit i better watch my mouth cause i might just offend some one

I don't see any problem with cursing... these words exist to be used! Used sparingly they can have an impact. Never understood Prince's weird obsession with removing the bad language from his music recently...

That said, I tend to only use such language in the company of other men... I watch my language when talking to a woman or a kid. Except my wife of course, she doesn't count. Where's my fucking dinner, woman!!! smile j/k

I usually use the small, less offensive (yeah right) cuss words like shit or damnit, and then again it's only when I've hurt myself or I'm really peeved. I rarely use the big, bad ones like the almight F word or the equally vulgar P word. They just seem too over the top for me.

I must say though, I try my best not to cuss at all. I don't think it's a really good presentation of the kind of person I am and want to be.

One problem I have with profanity is that parents use the
words...but then punish their children for using the same words.
I don't get it.
At what age does it become ok? 18th birthday?

I try to never use bad language, but certain words certainly
come to mind when you like ram your toe into a chair leg or
smash your finger in a door. disbelief
So...how's everybody doing? smile

I don't practice it in real life. innocent

I do not mind one bit when people use it...the only thing I find offensive is if a cuss word is directed at another person in seriousness.

What he said.

Words only have the power that you give them. They have no inherent meaning. Get over it.
