Toddlers & Tiaras... and Pretty Woman???

Ok... so I do not watch this show... but this article disturbed me so much that I had to share...

PTC slams 'Toddlers & Tiaras' for 'Pretty Woman' costume

Toddlers-and-Tiaras

A parenting group has opened fire on TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras, criticizing the series for showing a 3-year-old dressed as Julia Roberts’ prostitute character from Pretty Woman. The child beauty pageant reality hit’s new promo (below) includes a scene of the girl, named Paisley, wearing a variation on Roberts’ hooker garb.

“We have a serious problem when The Learning Channel* features a toddler, who probably hasn’t even learned to read, dressed as a prostitute showing off her sexy strut,” says Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the PTC: “There’s no question, TV executives are complicit in robbing these small kids of their childhood. For years we’ve seen adult sexuality being inappropriately and aggressively foisted on innocent young children, but children today are being sexualized at younger and younger ages.”

The network had no comment, but the girl’s mother, Wendy Dickey, explained the outfit to EW:

“Well, at this pageant there was an option to do celebrity-wear,” Dickey says. “And we thought about what we could wear with her being a brunette and Julia Roberts is my favorite actress of all time. I thought it was real cute to do Julia. She’s 3, if she was 10 I never would have considered this. But as young as she is I thought it was very comical.”

Pretty-Woman

Dickey adds that she made the skirt longer than Roberts’ outfit in the film and was stunned by the media’s response. She says that if people saw Paisley’s entire routine, which later has her daughter dressed as Roberts’ reformed character in a demure brown dress, they wouldn’t have quite the same outrage.

“I’m amazed it’s caused this much of a frenzy,” Dickey says. “The judges loved it. Everybody except one particular mom went nuts over it. It was the cutest thing ever. It was very innocent. A lot probably would have been different if they aired the whole entire routine instead of just the hooker part.”

Here’s the promo for the episode, which airs tonight:

*TLC changed its name from The Learning Channel in 1998.

As much as I dislike organizations like the PTC... they are right on here... the whole thing just boggles my mind.

I consider all these child beauty pageant contests as child abuse. No matter what clothes they let these children wear.

I'm very happy it's a strict American phenomenon and not ingrained in Dutch culture (except among the Surinam-Dutch community). Holland had to deal with enough horrible childporn cases already.

I did really like 'Little miss sunshine' lol

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

As far as just the image posted above (I can't really comment fully without seeing the episode)...

Far be it from me to agree with one of these moms (I LOVVVVVVVE T's & T's because it usually exposes, not celebrates, the crazy and innappropriateness of the parents) As wrong as it is, I too see it as comical.

I've seen sluttier looking children at the mall wearing tiny "real" outfits with fuckin child-heels, which I totally do not even get the point of.

OMG...I haven't seen that janet clip in soooooooo long! I wouldn't do a lot of what I see on TV....but its TV, I was raised not to take it too seriously. By the way, if anybody wants to point a finger....the little prositute outfit caused her to win the pageant....so what say we about the judges?

I do watch T&T...I love watching the nutty parents who will probably later fall over in embarassment after they watch themselves on the show. I have maybe seen 2 girls on the whole show that actually wanted to themselves to do pageants and all the work it entails.

Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

i saw a little girl at the mall near my house wearing high heels! eek she couldn't of been older than 6 years old, she also had on a dress that looked like something a street walker would wear.confused i looked at the mom (or woman she was with) and she was dressed exactly the same. scary!neutral

I have never watched this show, but I see a lot of advertisements for it. I think it's just disgusting. These parents and the tv producers should be ashamed of themselves. I would never do this to my kid.

Modelling is a different thing, but this pagent stuff is just plain wrong.

Ok some of the parents of these children are wrong on sooooo many levels and take it way too far sometimes. I do watch though lol...depending on the children featured.

Didn't see this episode but the last one I saw the mother dressed her kid up as Dolly Parton..complete with boob and ass pads..and a giant blonde wig so I don't even know which is worse here neutral

Some give their kids redbull to keep them awake and then the producers try to blur out the cans in the scenes and bleep out the word "redbull" whenever it's mentioned...Duh we know.

could have sworn I commented on this already.... weird... anyway I saw this episode it was disturbing on so many levels...the pretty woman out fit was actually the least disturbing thing.

to me...the little girl who was so tired she couldn't keep her eyes open so daddy got her "super juice" which was an energy drink, apple juice and some soda all put into a bottle and gave it to her. She was like 2 or 3 years old. UGH!

and the mom of the little girl who was totally NOT into it!!! mad she was TERRIBLE! the little girl must have been less than 2 years old...in the 0 - 18 month catagory. Cried and cried and cried....hated the whole thing, from pinning fake hair on to lacing up her outfit...to waiting and waiting and waiting. UGH! it was awful! They finally got the poor lil girl to stop crying and mom goes and accidentally bangs her head against a window in a door right before she's to go on stage. Ofcourse the lil thing is screaming now and mom is pissed! she later says (when daddy says pay back for banging her head) that she didn't do it. eek yes...SHE DID.

but the most disgusting was The mom! she was nasty, mean and bitter when her screaming child did not with the top trophy. I mean she won like 3rd place or something like that but did not even go up on stage to collect it. The dad eventually went and got it and gave it to the little girl and the mom was like "we don't want this" No, good job honey. No, encouraging words AT all. As a matter of fact when she came off the stage one of the times she was crying and the mom said to her "that was terrible" disbelief borderline child abuse I say!

for the older kids...who really seem into it...fine. but these little babies....NO.

"not a fan" falloff yeah...ok

Okay, that's way over the top. And she doesn't even look well put together, looks like a 5 and dime store halloween costume. I've seen this show off and on and the expense and time put into it alone is insane some of it is kinda cute. But to have you're child dressed up like a streetwalker for a contest, and win any place tells a lot.
