lol

I understand you'll do fine if you just shop along the perimeter of the grocery store, and stay out the middle aisles. Good luck.

hug Just think... "cook more from scratch" the less pre-fab pre-packaged pre-cooked stuff you buy, the better it is for you and your family.

You can control what you eat better if you make it yourself. biggrin

And make them kids drink water! Juice is too expensive dammit! Let them eat fruit!

When you go grocery shopping stick to the outside edges of the store, you'll find that's where the majority of the fresh foods are... if you regularly go up and down each aisle then you're running into all the processed stuff which is no good.

Also, my "smart phone" is a shopping list killer... find the recipe app that's right for you and you'll make the most amazing healthy foods...

I swear by the Epicurious app...

"Who didn't finish their juice?"

"why did you pour that much out if you weren't gonna drink it?"

"I am sick of paying $ ___ to buy this juicy juice/adam eve/welch's/tropicana just to have you pour it down the drain!"

My kids were notorius for drinking only 1/2 of what they poured in their cups. They actually love water, and they actually reach for the water now instead of the OJ or other juices too. eek

They drink more water than me. lurking lol

Can croquettes be made using the tuna? Has anybody ever tried this at home?

I am sure somewhere on the internet there is a few hundred recipes. There has to be one with many stars.

Anyway what a couple of people have said about shopping the outside is what the "experts" like Dr Oz are advising us poor fat folks to do. I think it is a good idea. The difficulty lies in being aware of what you bought and it's shelf life. I have had basil go bad more than once.

I also refuse to buy pasta that doesn't have a high fiber content. Regular pasta leaves you hungry shortly after making you feel like you're going to explode. However this new stuff stays with me longer.

When i was growing up even my hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts was like NY in that we had fruit stands and fruit markets everywhere. There was not all this "Super Store" crap and the people that sold you fruit and vegetable knew every fucken thing imaginable about their product and were happy to share that info with you. Nobody in the produce section of any "Super" wants to even stop and acknowledge you and except for being able to correctly make pyramids out of fruit I don't think they have any special love for their dept any more than the lady stocking diaper and tampons. Hell the lady stocking diapers and tampons may actually know something about the different brands in her department and may even help you out a bit.

I've never made them with tuna alone but have added tuna and crab meat to salmon. As a matter of fact I'm making that tonight. Use to only use mackeral it's not that flavorful, but it was cheap.

okay, here's some (hopefully) helpful info.

as an example:

Italian Style Ckn Breast Filet

small portioned plates have been the answer for me. i've found out that the presentation of the food is more than one half of appetite satisfaction. it's helped me. i take my the time to prepare the food with more care. by preparing my foods this way i've found that i don't violate my calorie intake. also, i take my time eating. periodically stopping eating during the meal (from 3-4 minutes) to savor and enjoy the rest of the food. or i'll cover what's left on the plate and have the rest as a snack later, (before 7:30pm) or for lunch the next day. i think i've learned to do this it is because the plate looks so wonderful. also, i don't eat until i'm full. i eat until i no longer feel hungry.

watching the food channel and shows like the iron chef have taught me that it's not the portion, but the presentation. by doing this, i've lost (so far) 23lbs over a 6month period. i have another 25lbs to go. (people that haven't seen me for awhile make very positive statements re:my weight loss)

remember, it's the presentation that gives the most satisfaction to each meal. as far as snacks go. either it's fruit or 1 slice of toast and peanut butter, or an all fruit smoothie, drinking 4oz only. (the rest will stay okay in the freezer in 4oz containers for later on in the week.)

also:exercise at least 3hrs per week.

it takes time, however after a few weeks you'll develop a habit of healthy eating. staying trim is done by adapting to a new (life long) life style in food.

good luck. i hope this motivates and helps you. the good part is: you can eat just about anything you want for dinner (in small portions). oh and drink at least 32oz of water or more per day. (no more sugary drinks)

you'l find your clothes will become looser and looser. i've gotten into clothes that have been waiting to be worn again. like skirts, jeans, blouses and etc. "i've found a whole new wardrobe right in my closet" (didn't have to spend a dime)

create creative and tasty meals, and good luck!

[Edited 9/1/11 10:32am]

p.s. i've also cut my salt (sodium) intake down to 1/4 less. some days i have no salt at all. to much salt's a killer to the heart and etc.

Everybody in my house hates me because I don't buy anything to drink except milk and water. I make homemade iced tea, but that's it. I don't do soda, sweetened drinks or even fruit juice - which is pretty much sugar water anyway. Eat the damn fruit!

It's what you make it.

School programs use to give kids chocolate milk for lunch and WIC also gave out vouchers for juice. It gives parents the idea that these drinks are healthy. Chocolate milk is better than no milk at all I guess. Soda has no nutritional value what so ever. I am fortunate to have a daughter that prefers water.
