Colombiana:(Zoe Saldana Rocks this Flick from Begining to End)

1hr-50min....I give it 3 Thumbs up...

"Colombiana" is really good...I saw the trailer a while back so I went in thinking it would be just "alright" and was very surprised. The Director did a GREAT job telling the story of a young Colombian/African girl growing up in an environment surrounded by "Drug-Lords/Killers". The first 10-minutes we get to see child Actress Amanda Stenberg deliver a Calm and convincing performance. At first I thought she was Willow Smith, they look so much alike. Amanda reminds me of Dakota Fanning @ that age. She is definitely going places...

Zoe storms in, takes over the role and the Director let's her shine in every scene. You get Action, Drama, some Comedy throwin in, an under-developed Love story and a boat-load of SUSPENCE. Think "Mission Impossible meets Foxy Brown"... Zoe is Hollywood's "It girl" and she delivers the goods. I've seen her past work but this Flick allowed me to see that she has a powerful presence on the silver-screen. Zoe's not a scene-stealer but she is the "glue" that holds every scene together. Now I get what Critics have been raving about for some time.

Zoe is Beautiful, a Size Zero, Great acting-chops, Movie Critics adore her and she's Black. So far the Studios have shown they're not afraid to gamble with her in a Leading role. If Zoe is able to get a few Block-Buster hits under her belt she will crack the Door in an industry that has forsaken Black Actresses for decades...

So "Foxy Brown" gets a New name, Face & make-over and in "Colombiana" she goes by the name "Cataleya"...Pam Grier would be proud of Zoe's performance in this flick. So go see it..

"Colombiana"
is worth an evening trip to the theatre, the admission price and a trip to the concession-stand.

hmmm Might have to check this out. As a black Latina I'd be interested to see how they handle her background, especially since a significant population of Colombia is black a fact that seems to escape a lot of people.

I'm so glad you mentioned how they handled the fact that she's a Black-Latina like yourself...I got confused. When you first see her Dad you know from the jump that he's Latino. So I was waiting for her Black mother to come around the corner but she didnt...LOL... Her mother sorta-looked like she could be part black, but she spoke Spanish and we learned later that she was also a Latina. Then later on Zoe meets up with her extended Family and they're all Latin...

So it's as if she's not part Black at all. If you see the movie let me know if I missed something. Zoe is part Black but I don't think her character is...

neutral See this the type of shit I'm talking about. At least a quarter of Colombia's population is straight up BLACK, or Afro-Colombianos. The number certainly increases if you factor in folks who are "mixed." Most people from Central America down through South America have a considerable African ancestry but Hollywood continues to portray them as mostly European looking Spaniards, when that's nowhere near the reality. rolleyes

Ain't no doubt these are black folks.

And before the usual comments come let me add a quote from Zoe herself:

When I go to the D.R., the press in Santo Domingo always asks, "¿Qué te consideras, dominicana o americana?" (What do you consider yourself, Dominican or American?) I don't understand it, and it's the same people asking the same question. So I say, time and time again, "Yo soy una mujer negra." ("I am a black woman.") [They go,] "Oh, no, tú eres trigueñita." ("Oh no, you are 'dark skinned'") I'm like, "No! Let's get it straight, yo soy una mujer negra." ("I am a black woman.")

^^It's sad that so many people don't understand the concepts of race and nationality. I've listened to many black latinos say how people claim that they're lying when they explain that they're hispanic. People really think that all latinos look like JLO and Eva Mendes. rolleyes

Read a damn history book. North America wasn't the only stop for those African slaves. There are more black people in Brazil, then anywhere in the world (except Africa, of course).

nod True, but slavery isn't the only way black folks came to Central America. There's been a considerable amount of immigration from the Caribbean islands, especially in the last century. For instance, MOST of the black folks in Panama, where I'm from, came from the islands to build the canal. Hence, why there's such a strong Caribbean culture in a lot of these Latino countries. Our food, accents when speaking English, VERY english last names (most of us have Spanish first/middle names and English last names in my family it's Gordon, Smith, McDonald, Evering, and so on) definitely emulate that of the Caribbean. So culturally, in a lot of ways, black Panamanians are much more West Indian than Spanish.

I think it's Sad that even Black Americans forget there are Black folks living all around the world. I know I am guilty of being ignorant about it. This has been a "Learning-Lesson"...

nod True. MOST Mexicans don't know or want to admit that it's a lot of African history there too considering Mexico got 4x as many slaves as the US and their first President was part black. So there's more than enough ignorance and denial to go around.

Exactly, or Ethnicity. We Americans understand that Americans are all different colors, but somehow don't get that Latinos are made up of indigenous Americans, white, black, asian or anything in between

Mexico still has its own indegenous African-Americans, in, natch, southern Mexico. Of course, discriminated against.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.
