thanks. i'm hoping that this will have all played out by the time i'm ready. i have a feeling the current distribution system is going to collapse and i'll be on the ground floor of whatever comes after (and that it is successful). buying direct from the publisher would be ideal, but tedious.

there're just too many comics out there that people are unaware of, and i think the medium is only going to become a more legitimate art form. i don't think super-heroes should be the standard bearer. i'm one of those 'there's a beatles song for everybody' types. that's the kind of shop i want to operate. if you come in, we'll find something that you like...now BUY IT!

I think the future of comic books will be like how vinyl records are today--catering to a smaller but loyal demographic while most fans convert to digital.

and this...more of a comics 'boutique', if you will.

Why? confused What possible logic could you have for that line of thinking? If all you're going to do is stock trades why wouldn't you have a wall, or a section, for indies? Their trades sell exceptionally well and their books, as a whole, are far more interesting and original.

I don't understand how digital is expected to help retailers, either. Its going to mean less foot traffic in their shops, which means less sales. Its a pretty easy equation.

my plan is to have my stock sorted by genre, rather than publisher. there are plenty of super-hero comics out there, and indies will be as well represented as any other publisher; but i'm not going to dedicate the bulk of my space to marvel and dc. i'm (hopefully) not going to depend on them as my main source of revenue. it's sort of the reverse of traditional comics shops. rather than have marvel and dc be the destination, they'll just be another side street. the amount of quality comic books out there far out numbers the output of dc and marvel. people just need to have it shown to them. continuity junkies and completists are not going to be my market.

Ah, gotcha. Yes, this makes a ton of sense and with the introduction of same day digital release for the periodicals it may actually be the future of brick and mortar comic ships. My local shops (been going to the same shops for over twenty years - one of them for twenty-seven) have been ever so slowly expanding their trade sections over the last decade.

yeahthat Cerebus clearly got all in a bunch thinking you were not going to include indies, and you can see where that might be an issue for Cerebus. Sorry about that. lol

no harm, no foul. your namesake will be fairly represented, in fact aardvark vanaheim might be the only publisher to have 100% representation in my store.wink

sorry to de-rail, efan. and i appreciate your admiration, but let's reserve it until anything admirable has been accomplished. i've got a ways to go.

Not to speak for him, because he does so quite eloquently on his own, but I'm sure Efan will be fine with anything comic book related that you feel like posting. We've tried to make comic book threads in the past but they always die a quick death. lol

Exactly right. I love talking about anything and everything comics here. The org always brings out an interesting assortment of comics readers, so I enjoy it.

I've renamed the thread to make it broader.

likewise...and in that regard...

my last two reads were...

'garden' by yuichi yokoyama...no real plot to speak of, but a really trippy, surreal kind of story. he skillfully displays his talents of detail and storytelling. this could only be a comic.

and...

'paying for it' by chester brown...i haven't read the appendices (which nearly equal the page count of the actual story), but this guy's got some weird notions of love and personal relationships. brown's a skilled cartoonist, and comes up with some endearing stories (mostly autobiographical), but i like most of his other work better.

and i'm currently waiting on the comics journal #301 and big questions to arrive in the mail. cj #301 features, among other journalism and reprints, a lengthy essay on dave sim's often confusing, often misunderstood, certainly devisive 'cerebus'.

I haven't read Garden, but I enjoyed Paying for It. There were times I wanted to argue directly with the book. He definitely has unique notions, but if it works for him, I think it's cool. Not so much for the woman he's with, though.

i recommend garden very highly. it's fun. it's a shining example of something that only comics can do.

i liked paying for it. i understand the feeling of arguing with the book. it was as if brown were trying to start an argument, or at least a debate. i had alot to say to that book. i've been looking for something to read, i guess i should check out the appendices.

have you read chester brown's 'louis riel'?

No, Paying for It was my first Chester Brown, although I knew of him and his work. I saw him on a panel at Comic-Con, too, and he seemed charming. I liked him. I think he wanted the book to be challenging and provocative, but I don't think he's really argumentative in person. But the book certainly is.

interesting about brown in person. he comes off in his stories as rather cold and detached.

'louis riel' was my first experience with him. it's the story of 19th century canadian revolutionary louis riel. brown's cartooning skills are amazing in this one.

Of all the DC relaunch books, the only one that is a lock for me is Batwoman. J.H. Williams III very much deserved the Eisner award he won for illustrating Batwoman in Detective Comics.

i loved his run on detective comics (what i saw of it). i first saw his stuff in 'promethea' and loved it there, but he's come a long way since then.

I know there was an announcement made last week in Midtown Comics that books would be delayed one day because of the hurricane, but when I just called, I was told all books came in on schedule today. I had better get my ass to their store!
