Florida couple charged for ‘hoarding’ 700 cats Seven HUNDRED cats!!?! I have two and sometimes I wonder if that was a good idea. If they weren't brothers from the same litter I would probably only have one.
On a side note, how many of them were inside? And what did that smell like?

A Florida couple has been charged with 47 counts of animal cruelty after authorities seized nearly 700 cats from their Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary in June.
The Humane Society called it "the biggest case of cat hoarding," the group had ever seen, according to News4Jax.
In June, authorities seized more than 700 cats from the "sanctuary," after the county had warned Pennie and Steven Lefkowitz that they were only allowed to care for 100 cats. A hundred of the cats had to be euthanized because their diseases were so severe, according to local TV station WCJB. University of Florida veterinary students are spaying and neutering the remaining cats and hope to hold an adoption drive at the end of the month.
"These people started out well intentioned, but they were in way, way, way over their head," State Attorney Bill Cervone told The Gainesville Sun. "I am optimistic we will be able to resolve something with them that will address the mental health issues that I believe they have and prevent a recurrence."
By the couple's own account, they started taking on cats en masse as a humanitarian cause. "I was just tired of seeing so much euthanasia and wanted to know what we could do personally," Pennie Lefkowitz said in June, according to News4Jax.

That's just such a HUGE number. Seven hundred. How was it allowed to get that bad in the first place?

Those people should be put down.

I don't know if this is a case of having an overly kind heart without being fully responsible or just folks with serious mental issues. What sad to me is I doubt they'll be able to give away 600 cats which means more will end being put down.

You cannot adequately care for 700 cats. This is shameful. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Really. They should be put into a mental institution. There is no way you can properly care for 700 animals. I'm shocked only 100 of the cats were sick. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

There's some sort of winged insect that has decided to cocoon multiple times on one of my lavender plants this summer. I'm gonna be pissed if they're big ass moths.

I agree with what y'all are saying (except maybe the putting them down part ), but what I still don't understand is how did it get to such a large number without somebody doing something about it? Like, 200 wasn't a big enough problem? 400? It just seems like, as usual, these people were allowed to fall through the cracks until a small issue became a huge problem.

People heard it was a sanctuary and kept dropping off unwanted cats, along with nature just taking it's course, I can see it spiraling out of control especially if the "owners" of the sanctuary couldn't bring it in their heart to say, 'no more, please'. I surprised they didn't have a mass of feral cats. Obviously there's not enough people to go around who inspect these types of facilities. Wasn't trying to be cruel with the put down statement the reality is what it is, that's the reason those folks open the santuary in the first place, it must happen a lot.

I figured it was something like this, especially the nature taking its course part. But again, if these people were known to have mental illnesses (even possible mental illness), somebody should have been checking on them. Neighbors should have noticed the cats. .... something! Seven hundred is just... ya know... A LOT of cats.
My putting them down remark was directed at Teacher suggesting the couple be put down.

Oh. I missed that part, naw I'm not for putting down the coupled their intentions may have been good, but then again the path to hale is paved with. Anyway, yeah, 700 is a large number to wrap ones head around. But thinking about it even further it's quite possible that most of those cats were just taken there and dropped off since most didn't seem feral, usually cats born in that kind of overcrowded situation are since there's no way they're getting a lot of human interaction.

I'm evil like that. But seriously, they helped NONE of the cats - instead they made sure that a huge number of those cats will be put down due to disease, malnutrition, disfigurement (a very common aspect of inbreeding) or the simple fact that they can't find sustainable homes for them. So, I just suggested we put that kind of people down instead of 600 or so cats. 2 against 600, what's the issue?
