There alot of great indie movies with meaty black characters. The Black Audience does not support them.
Sadly I have to agree. That was one of Spike Lee's major complaints--Get on the Bus was one example. Spike indicated he could never get the community to support a movie with blacks doing the right thing so to speak. I think that's why some of us have issues with the Tyler Perry stuff because it seems to promote more of the stereotypical black than the real black middle and upper classes yet people seem to support those movies/plays.
I agree. As annoying as Spike can be at times, this is one thing I've always agreed with him about. Seems, IMO, that most of the black audience rather spend their money laughing at stereotypes about their own rather than supporting quality movies. At the same time, I can commend Tyler Perry for employing many black actors who otherwise don't get a chance at all in Hollywood....but his material could be mo' betta. Just sayin'. I can respect Spike way more than Perry because at least Spike, even though some of his movies I totally don't get, has tried to portray African Americans in a more positive, yet raw, light, that at the end of the day I can be proud of.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince. |
