What's the best and quickest way to learn a new language for you? It amazes me the grip some folks have on two or three languages. Being a native English speaker I find it somewhat quite difficult sticking with learning a new language.

What languages would you like to learn/master? Any tips on learning a new language...

Theres really not a quick way to learn a new language, it takes years to habitualize new vocab and grammatical rules of a language. The easiest way is to continually talk to yourself in the language (make yourself aware continually of what you can say well and the areas that you have difficulty with and continue and continue practicing). It also helps if you have a lover/gf/friend/or acquaintance who speaks the language and who can assist you in immersioning yourself in listening to and getting constant feedback on your speaking. Other than that the best advice I can give is just to keep trying to say stuff, and never be afraid to make errors. Most people I know who hold themselves back do so because theyre afraid to sound stupid in making errors, but thats the ONLY way to get mastery of a language, by goung right thru the middle from newby to apprentice to knowledgable speaker to fluency. If you start with the expectation that it'll take at least 3-6 years you'll be less likely to beat yourself up for not getting things down in unrealistic time. On the other hand, if you have the money for it, getting one on one intensive lessons at a place like Berlitz might help speed up that learning time, but dont start anything like that unless youre truly commited to carrying it thru to the end cuz otherwise you'll end up wasting your money and time.

I speak fluently english, french and spanish (english & spanish from birth, but french from childhood starting in elementary school) but am a minor speaker of German, where Ive also attended school. I can understand Dutch & Portuguese. Those two are the languages I'm learning at the moment... slowly but surely.

Change it one more time..

Yes, thank you.

Have you seen the thread titles up in here (including my own)? It's unbearable.

Are you trying to get a rise out of me! Im a lot more mellow than I used to be! I do find a lot of the threads very tedious though so I create my own. I'm like the Prince of the Org. 'When I want new threads, I make 'em'. The difference between me and Prince though is that I'm not a knob.

Yr trying to make ALL of them your own by the looks of it! biggrin
