The Power of the Subconsious Mind

Any validity to this? Can you really affirm the good until you subconsious makes it happen?

I don't know about the positive affirmations but I believe that your subconscious is strong. I know that most times it is common that if we think we are bad, we will reflect that. So it's probably the same with the positive things you tell yourself. I like to keep it balanced.

Someone gave a good example of what happened to him that shows the power of the subconscious. The peace loving man said that he once woke up ready to fight and strangle somebody and he thought that was weird. But what happened was (I think someone told him later what happened the previous night) while he was sleeping the neighbors closest to his bedroom window had a major fight that went on for some time and escalated to a domestic disturbance with someone being arrested, all the while he was hearing the fighting which affected him where he woke up angry ready to fight.

I thought that was an interesting experience and remember that.

Hope any of this helps. lol

Interesting! Yes, I am trying to not let any negative thoughts come through or at least to try and turn them into positive! And when I'm falling asleep I try to only think of good instead of worrying about things. That way they'll seep into my subconsious! smile

It happens. You know sometimes it has been ingrained in us from when we were very young. But yeah, I try to reason with myself if negative thoughts do come into my mind and find the positive. That's why I liked to watch Dr Phil sometimes.

I believe in the validity of the power of the subconscious mind and the law of attraction; however, it's not nearly as easy as some people make it out to be, like that person who wrote "The Secret" a few years ago. It was a highly oversimplified view on the law of attraction which basically implied that if you kept telling yourself long enough "I want (insert desired outcome)", it would magically appear to you. It's not anywhere easy as that; otherwise, we'd all be living the good life, living in expensive houses, eating junk food all the time yet being fabulously buff and healthy, having incredible sex every day, and our children would all be well-behaved and perfect.

One of the things I have noticed about the women I'm attracted to is that while I am attracted to all races of women, I have a preference for redheads and Latinas. The redhead part probably comes from my childhood, as my stepmother was a redhead/strawberry blonde who dated my father who adopted me at birth when I was seven years old and later married him. My father began dating again after my adoptive mother died of cancer when I was just four years old. At any rate, my father and stepmother had a child together who also was a redhead. Unfortunately, my father died a little over a year later due to a rare autoimmune disorder.

But back to the subconscious. As I said, my stepmother and baby sister were both redheads, and my first serious girlfriend was also a redhead/strawberry blonde. I'm sure I was attracted to her subconsciously because I was already familiar with being around redheads. I dated some women since then, but my other most serious relationship came when I dated a Latina after I graduated from college. I found myself incredibly attracted to her when I first saw her but coiuldn't figure out why. Then someone pointed out to me how people always asked if I had some Hispanic heritage. I wasn't sure at the time, but one of my younger sisters was looking for her biological parents, and she did some research on my biological parents, at whcih point she discovered my biological mother was Mexican. So I suppose my Latina attractions came from the fact that I am part Latin myself.

The other proof of the power of the law of attraction came early on in middle school when I saw something about Northwestern University being a great college, and I determined from that point on that I would be going to college there. Now I wasn't aware at the time it was one of the most elite colleges in the country, and my grades weren't all that great back then, but I knew deep in my mind and heart that I would get in. Though I struggled to get my academics up in high school, I got accepted to Northwestern and graduated with a bachelors degree in sociology four years later.

But one thing I noticed about the law of attraction is that things don't just happen to you just because you think about it. Notice how I said I struggled to get my grades up in order to attend Northwestern University. As someone said, attraction doesn't happen without action, which is in the word attraction. For instance, you may want to lose weight and try to program and hypnotize your mind by saying " I will lose weight." But if you don't make an effort to attempt to lose weight, like eating healthy, drinking more water, exercising, etc., the affrimation will not manifest itself. Likewise, you may want to get rich and affirm, "I am getting more wealthy every day", but if you start worrying about how you're going to pay the bills the next day, that affirmation will not manifest either because the thought of worrying about being destitute will be more dominant in your mind. I beleive Deepak Chopra said that the reason the law of attraction doesn't work for most people is because they ask for what they desire out of a sense of fear, desperation, or lack instead of a sense of gratitude for what they do have. It is by being thankful and serene that we attract what we really want.

BTW, not only does the law of atraction work on an individual level; it works on the macro level as well. Unfortunately, it also works to ruin things as well as making one's life better. Case in point: the Republicans have been preaching for the last 30 yrears that government is the biggest problem facing the nation, and that it does nothing good for the people. So it's natural that once these people get elcted to office, they can't govern very well, and things end up going in the crapper, whether it's an unnecessary war or crashing the nation's economy.

Wow! That was fantastic! I see exactly what you are saying! In some ways I see that it absolutely works, (I"m actually reading that exact book by Dr. Joseph Murphy that you posted above) and in some ways, like you said, if it worked like that everyoen would be living fabulously. But for example; when I was in my late teens I bought a book called "think yourself thin" and it told you to think of what you wanted to weigh and affirm constantly that you weighed that number. I did and it worked ! I also had to do the work, dieting and working out, but I thought the number I wanted my weight to be and it has been that number (roughly, few pounds here and there) for about 17 years. So in that regard, it totally works! I've noticed though, that when I got to the chapter about $ I got uncomfortable. I would love to have more money but I feel uncomfortable wanting it. Does that make sense? I think I feel greedy. So I have a hard time affirming that.

Thanks for your input. smile

As for the money hangups, it's about trying to overcome your past conditioning over money issues. You've probably been told that having lots of money is bad, that people who have lots of money only do bad things with it or are self-centered, or maybe you had an incident in your life where someone with lots of money has done something wrong with it or had some misfortune which caused him/her to lose it (e.g., divorce, gambled it away, did drugs, went to jail, etc.). But also remember that money in itself is just a medium for exchanging goods and services, so don't just affirm "I want more money" per se. You could end up with a huge sum of money but have no time to enjoy it, or it may come via nefarious means which violate your core values.

Basically, one way to discover what you really desire is to wish for something and then break down the reason why you want it so bad. For example, a horny but frustrated nerdy teen boy wants to get laid, and he affirms and/or prays for God to send him a skanky girl who will have sex with him so she will fall in love with him. What he really wants is a woman who will love him for who he is. As for money, people always say they want a lot of money or to get rich, but they don't specify how much money or what they want it for. Be specific in your affirmations ("I want to have $10,000 in spendable cash come into my possession every month so I can spend more time with my family, travel the world, etc.") and know the real reason you want what you desire (more freedom, financial security, etc.), believe that you have received it, and take steps for that desire to manifest. For example, you may want your dream house in a particular location, but you do not have the money or time yet to move there. But you can still look at home listings and buy a token item to furnish your dream house, such as a piece for furniture. But you must keep you mind focused on your ultimate prize.

Boy, you're good! And I see what your saying. When I see people who've won the lottery on t.v. and they've won , like 212 million dollars, I get so uncomfortable. It's just TOO MUCH! I would never want an obscene amount like that. But I would like to win, say, $500,000. Just enough to get ahead and live comfortably. Plus, I would give to people. Not just charities but also people. I would love to just drive down the street and call over random homeless people and say "here, here's a thousand dollars, go to a nice hotel, have a hot meal." I also have always prided myself on never having a "Love of money" I haven't cared one iota about money until the last couple of years, and now I'm to the point where I feel like, I see my husband running himself into the ground with work just to keep it going and I know that money is freedom and now I want some! But still feel comfortable asking for it confused

In fact, as I'm reading that book, I still haven't done any affirmations about money. They've just been little affirmations, like when we were looking at houses , I said, "We have found the perfect house." And we did! And when my husband was looking for a new car (after being car-jacked) but couldn't find anything he liked in his price range, I affirmed, "He has found a perfect, affordable new car" and he did! lol
