The fact that anyone in 2011 is still using that word is insulting in itself. It's so very 2003. coffee

I went to a Prince show a few weeks ago, I don't think I saw too many people that looked anything like hipsters. There were about 10,000 people there. I went to a Chromeo show a few nights before that and most people in the crowd looked like hipsters. There were about 800 people at that show.

One thing I've noticed about hipsters is that they are not very interested in the classic African-American artists. They might pay attention to newer ones if they are mentioned on some web sites. I can see why "Dirty Mind" could have some hipster appeal, but I don't see them all rushing to the store to get the latest Prince release.

You realize that Chromeo, speaking of knowing first hand, are HUGE prince fans.

And no one rushes to get the latest prince release. lol

But maybe it's just because most of these "hipsters" I know are in the music business.

I don't understand the first comment of your reply. I didn't intend to pit Prince against Chromeo in any way. I like em both myself. I was just comparing the audiences I saw at their gigs. The hipster audience just clearly went to see the new act that has gotten more coverage on certain websites and magazines. That's what hipsters usually do.

Plenty of people will buy the latest Prince release on the first day it becomes available in stores. Most people on the main section of this forum do that. That's what fans usually do.

I am not able to grasp the intended use of the word "hipster" in the context of the third sentence in your reply. The word usually refers to a person that hasn't developed a deeper appreciation for non-mainstream forms of art and music, but pretends that they are really into them in order to impress others. For some reason these type of people also seem to share a certain taste in clothing. Hipsters are usually quite young and still in the process of shaping their identities.

+ the listed I made above was done jokingly. Feel free to wear scarfs during the summer and flat shoes with skirts.

So, hipster is more a thing for kids who are obsessed with positioning themselves in their little social environment in stead of knowing what they actually like and want?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I didn't say you were pitting them against each other.

Plenty of people on this site might, but many a Prince fan won't be rushing out to get his new stuff.

Your description is not one of a hipster, you're describing a poser. Hipsters do know their non-mainstream shit and it is appreciated. And I disagree that they are still young as well.

I know your list as a joke.

And I don't wear flats, like ever.

Then you probably just think the word means something else than what most people understand by it.

No, I'm not referring to "posers" (at least not in the sense that word was used in punk and metal circles). The so-called "hipsters" certainly do a lot of posing though. Denying that would be just silly.

I find a lot of hipsters to be annoying and intensely self-righteous. They claim to be "liberal and hip" but typically stay within the safe confines of their monolithic circle of fellow hipster friends. From what I've seen hipsters typically live in tough neighborhoods that are being "gentrified" (going from the hood to overpriced condos), have probably a token black friend (two at the most) and go to trivia nights at bars and then take 100 pictures and post them on their social networking sites....I find hipsters to be irritating and phony....

They are annoying. They think they're better than everybody else. Also, they tend to imitate hippies, natives, etc. I was shopping last week and I saw two so-called hipsters wearing native hairdress. SMH!

Asymph--that's so stupid, LOL but true! They probably run around talking about how they're 1/24th Native american and "understand the struggle"---I had one hipster dude tell me how he really read a lot about MLK (I'm black). I shoulda said bitch please, I like to drink Guinness so you think I'm really connecting to you now because you're "Irish-American?" By the way Irish people who are actually in Ireland hate the term Irish-American with a passion, but that's another story! LOL!
