His trademark include his upright hairstyle and vintage wardrobe, the combination of which led to his categorization as a "hipster doofus"

I wouldnt say its insulting so much as someone calling you out for trying to be "hip" whether you agree or not.. It may be more attitude than fashion..

it once meant a very specific thing, but like all youth sub-genres it has been co-opted by corporate America and diluted until it can be sold at shopping malls.

if people are labeling you as that, and I totally mean this, it means you need a new look.

by the time a term is common amongst groups, it means it's yesterday's news. and let's face it, who wants to be that? rolleyes

I'm more of a "ripster" I rip all my pockets off my clothes. It's totally going to be the next look.

I know many, some of them are annoying, some are really cool people.

The only thing that bothers me about some of those who get labeled "hipsters" is the condescending attitudes. Its OK to be passionate about something, even if its only because you think it makes you look cool. Its not OK to think that passion makes you better than somebody else, or that they aren't as cool as you because they're not into the same thing. That shit is the reason I completed high school on independent study. Otherwise, hipster shmipster.

lol @ this thread, though

Edit: WTF with my typing lately. confused

Side note: I have some chronically hipster friends in Seattle. Everything about them - their clothes, hair cuts, EYE GLASSES lol , music choices, where they eat, what they drink, on and on and on - SCREAMS hipster. Thankfully, the only thing they're douchey about is their "indie music" (a lot of which I actually really like). So I just play the most deep, late night house music as loud as possible whenever they're in my car. Then I laugh at them squirming and I don't think they get it most of the time. lol

nope.

Being called a Grup can sometimes be intended as an insult, but I don't ever take it as one.

According to the first definition at Urban Dictionary, I too am occasionally a grup. I had to look it up, though, which is disappointing since its a Star Trek word. disbelief

Only thing i hate is when folks wear fake eye glasses. I think its an insult to people who cant see.

I would give anything for 20/20 vision . I wouldn't have to spend tons of money on Contacts and glasses.

If you wear a scarf around your neck even during the summer there's a high chance you might be a hipster.

If you pretend to like abstract music when what you mostly listen to is just alternative rock or mainstream dance music you're certainly a hipster.

If you say you are a leftist but still visit overpriced cafes you're a hipster.

If you can name at least five different coffee brands that aren't sold at your nearest supermarket there's a high chance you're a hipster.

If you are a chick that pretends to know something about fashion but wear flats with a skirt you're a hipster.

If you consider getting involved in the performance art scene new and exciting you're a hipster.

If you are involved in the performance art scene yourself, wear flat shoes with a skirt, can name at least five different coffee brands that aren't sold at your nearest supermarket, wear a scarf during the summer - all of these things - you're most likely a woman over the age of 40.

Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, hipsters don't usually listen to Prince. So you're most likely clean.

Kind of. I have a lot of friends who are dancers and musicians involved in the performance art scenes in three different cities and the all hate hipsters because they actually WANT people to come to their shows. lol

I went to a Prince show a few weeks ago, I don't think I saw too many people that looked anything like hipsters. There were about 10,000 people there. I went to a Chromeo show a few nights before that and most people in the crowd looked like hipsters. There were about 800 people at that show.

One thing I've noticed about hipsters is that they are not very interested in the classic African-American artists. They might pay attention to newer ones if they are mentioned on some web sites. I can see why "Dirty Mind" could have some hipster appeal, but I don't see them all rushing to the store to get the latest Prince release.

You realize that Chromeo, speaking of knowing first hand, are HUGE prince fans.

And no one rushes to get the latest prince release. lol

But maybe it's just because most of these "hipsters" I know are in the music business.
