My experience has been that you kinda have to go south (and middle) to get more of a crossover. I grew up in the Northeast (NJ then lived in PA) and I never met "country" self-professed "hillbilly" folk of color until we moved to this area. Of course there are folk of various colors/ethnicities in each (ghetto/trailer), to varying degrees. But, it's terminology that's painfully well known for black/white divisive issues and good fodder for

Simple...skin color.
When you see a white person acting or appearing "that way" they are called trailer park trash.
A minority...ghetto. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

I agree mostly however I know some white people that I would describe as "ghetto" as opposed to "white trash". Shake it til ya make it

That's a big assumption. A lot of people live in trailer parks because its inexpensive, or simply the life they're used to living, not because they don't have money. You can BUY a nice ass trailer (relatively speaking) and have a payment far less than what you would for a small house. Shit, I'm pretty sure they sometimes cost less than the down payment on a house. Anyway, buying something feels good no matter what income level you're at.
As far as what the words mean, because I use them, I think it refers to lower to lower-middle class white folk who are a bit out of style. 80s haircuts. Bellies hangin' out of too short shirts. Camouflage wearin'. Gun rack in the raised pick-up. No shoes on, child on hip, drinkin' a beer. Doesn't necessarily mean they're poor, though.
Also, I'm going to have to agree with KRS, too. Crime is totally different in the ghetto than it is in the trailer park. People are not regularly getting murdered in trailer parks like they are in Richmond and Oakland (my local examples). Its just a totally different lifestyle.
Lastly, I agree with Stoned. A certain type of white person, stereotype or not, is going to be labeled "trailer park", where as a minority would be called ghetto. Again, stereotypes - not necessarily truths. And I full well realize that "white people" will be the minority soon enough. When that happens they'll still be the ones labeled "trailer park".

Totally agree. But strangely I've never known anyone I would describe the other way around.

You know, I don't think I have either. Shake it til ya make it

Clearly neither of you have ever seen Trailer Park Boys.
In Canada, especially the maritimes, "trailer park" comes in every race.

Well, this show, filmed like an hour from where I live, is basically what the rural folk are like out here.
But it is a hilarious show.

50 cent ain't ghetto... he's a hood rat. 50cent has good manners and he plays ghetto to sell records.
Now Kwanye West is ghetto! He has zero etiquette and the more money her makes the worse he gets.
Eminem... is he trailer park or trashy? I don't know because I would describe him as a hoodrat too.

I've never heard somebody referred to as trailer park....trailer trash is the term I've most often heard or the ever popular white trash...and of course, I've heard ghetto slung around freely as well...my only issue with anything trailer related is that I've never saw fit to minimalize somebody because of WHAT they live in...nobody ever says "apartment trash", "duplex dickhead" or "subsidized housing son of a bitch"...my point is, if you're gonna have an issue with somebody, have it because of what they are, not where they are....have it because you have a real issue with them and not just a fucked up perception of them... How is it you feel?

I have family that lives in trailers (some in trailer parks) that have never made one appeareance on cops...I have friends that live in projects that haven't appeared on cops...shows like that are part of the problem (dont get me wrong I watch it and have been entertained) but they show the lowest type people or people at their lowest...and both of those type fol;ks can be found in any living arrangement How is it you feel?

Very true. when I was young I worked for a stylist once who moved from Georgia to Miami, and he was prepping to by his mom back home a doublewide trailer. He showed me some brochure information and I was shocked at how modern and spacious they were. Depending on which angle you photograph them, some double wides even resemble the "shotgun house" style of architecture in the south, even though I think they're actually bigger . Another thing I learned that day is that trailer parks aren't just a non- minority enclave either; cause homeboy was a black dude with a Jheri curl . Anyhoo- who knew that these days they're making trailers with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms I figure it gives some folks the opportunity to own a little piece of something all their own in this world, good on them.

I would surmise there's been a lot of tongue and cheek, concerning this topic. I'm hesitant to say get a sense of humor... because some people feelings could be hurt and offended.
I'd suggest one look at the lighter side of things...
The way the media speaks and portrays the South and West side of Chicago, you'd think it was all ghetto. But it ain't... sometimes you have to laugh at the perception.

You know im playin... Heck, when my parents had me they had to live in the trailer court for a while.. this is why people have this preconcieved notion about people who live in trailers and the "ghetto" You only see the bad people because that makes good television... ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I think it's easier to laugh at the perception if you know what the reality is...but for those that don't know the reality, all they have is the perception and when that perception is overwhelmingly negative then it creates an issue for those that live in that 'reality' ...
I apologize for my overuse of the words perception and reality in that post How is it you feel?
