Two weeks an counting . . . dancing jig

Friday September 2

Sting
Composer, singer, author, and activist; Sting has won universal acclaim in all these roles, yet he defies easy labeling. In 1977, after playing in a few small bands, Sting formed The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five albums, earned six Grammy awards, and in 2003 was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Since 1985, Sting has released 12 solo albums. For nearly four decades, he has remained at the forefront of the public consciousness and has been widely recognized for his musical contributions, collecting an additional 11 Grammys, 2 Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year. He has appeared in more than 10 films and in 1989, starred in The Threepenny Opera on Broadway.

Sting’s support for human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and the Rainforest Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife, Trudie Styler, in 1989, also mirrors his art in universal outreach.
Chic
Anyone from the era of disco music will get goose bumps when they hear the name Chic. Thé disco band of the seventies and early eighties caused clubs all over the world to go crazy. With tremendous hits like Good Times, Dance, Dance, Dance and Le Freak Chic earned great worldwide fame that lasts till this day on.

In 1984, founders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards decided to end Chic when the sales quickly deteriorated. Both of them became successful producers working on albums of Madonna, David Bowie, Duran Duran and many others. When the formation played their old hits for an enthusiastic crowd on a birthday party in 1992, they decided to re-establish Chic.

When Edwards died in 1996 during a tour in Japan, Chic abruptly came to an end. Nile Rodgers however could not resist the urge of making music and decided to bring Chic back to life with a complete new formation in 2003. In this new formation Chic is still performing their old hits with just as much passion as in the disco era.
Earth, Wind & Fire
Disco sensation Earth, Wind & Fire earned their fame thanks to their big hits in the seventies and early eighties. With gigantic hits like September, Boogie Wonderland and Let's Groove, the members of EWF earned world fame. They performed and partied all over the world as the first Afro-American band in the world without an opening act.

Since the founding of EWF in 1975, they made twenty studio albums and had numerous huge hits. Even after the most successful period in the 70s/80s, in which the formation won six Grammys and four American Music Awards, the formula still proved to be successful. In 2003, 2004 and 2005, the creations of EWF were nominated again, for a Grammy. Even after four decades their performances are still very popular amongst the general public.
Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band featuring Terence Blanchard
Five-time Grammy winner Terence Blanchard is known for his peculiar and unique style that made him one of the greatest trumpet players of our time. The ease and pleasure with which Terence Blanchard shares his beautiful music with the world, even makes jazz-haters respect this leading jazz musician.

All-rounder Poncho Sanchez is not only very skilled when it comes to playing the conga, but his voice also causes goose bumps. Since his first album in 1982, Sanchez plays in one of the most popular and influential Latin jazz bands of the world. Whether it's Salsa, Latin Jazz, Jazz or music with soul and blues elements, Sanchez tells the story of his childhood and his life with his music, in the most creative and unique way.
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have come a long way since their humble beginnings nearly a decade ago. Steeped within the gilded and gritty sounds of gospel, soul and funk, this nine-piece Brooklyn collective has continued to electrify fans, disc jockeys, critics, record collectors and bloggers the world-over with their authentic, heart-felt sound. Their new album ‘I Learned the Hard Way’ is a celebration of, and a testament to, the soulful and beautiful possibilities of music.

As distinguished as their recordings may be, however, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have truly become renowned thanks to their incredible live show. And though it’s certainly no easy task to keep such a vast ensemble on the road, the band continues to pack hundreds of clubs worldwide, from legendary venues like New York’s Apollo Theater, Beacon Theater and Central Park’s SummerStage to their show-stopping sets at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Roskilde, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and WOMAD.
Danilo Pérez Trio
Jazz musician at heart, that's what Danilo Pérez is. Pérez was just a young boy when he learned to play various instruments, including piano and the bongos, which paid off on the long term. His numerous Grammys awards and nominations prove that he actually is one of the greatest jazz composers of our time.

Through the years, Perez was a member of several bands with which he made albums that all tell a story of their own. One of his most personal albums ‘The Journey’ told the story of the journey that African slaves used to make across the ocean and ‘PanaMonk’ was a tribute to Thelonious Monk. The depth that is created due to this particular element is not just something Danilo Perez is praised for, but it’s what makes him a wonderful and special artist.
Levi Silvanie
Next to the big, established artist, there will also be room for new talent at Curacao North Sea Jazz. Local artist Levi Silvanie will be playing his relaxing music and will show his audience that he has all the qualities to become a huge star like the great artists he’s sharing the stage with.

After Levi Silvanie became the drummer of Duo Gleva at the age of 12, he left to the Netherlands to study in 2007. Unfortunately he didn’t get permission to go to the university. Levi figured that giving up and returning home made no sense at all, so he started to play on different stages. Within a few years, he already did several tours and his debut album ‘Different’ is coming out soon. Watch a preview
Kassav'
When Pierre-Edouard Décimus and Freddy Marshall introduced the zouk genre in 1979, they never could have predicted how successful the band would become. By combining their favorite music carnival with a modern twist, including influences of rock, this new musical genre was born. In a short period of time they became well known in the Caribbean, Africa and southern Europe.

The group decided to temporarily stop after releasing four albums. Various band members started a solo career, until a compilation was released in 1999, to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the group. Critics talked about the end of Kassav'. The members of the group and the formula would be too old. During a concert in Paris Kassav' proved they are still alive and kicking by bringing no fewer than 32,000 fans in frenzied atmosphere. And we expect them to do nothing less then that in Curaçao!
Branford Marsalis Quartet
Saxophone player Branford Marsalis performed in the bands of Art Blakey, his brother Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock and Sting in the eighties, before he started his own band. As Buckshot Lefonque Marsalis was very successful with an eclectic mix of jazz, rhythm and blues, funk, hip hop, reggae and rock. But also behind the scenes – for example as producer of David Sanchez's 'Obsession' - the eldest son of the Marsalis family proves to be a great talent.

His quartet – that consists of Marsalis himself, pianist Joey Calderazzo, bass player Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner - is one of the best contemporary jazz has to offer to date. On their latest album ‘Metamorphosen’ Marsalis again shows that his musical wealth knows no limitations.

Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder's incredible musical career brought him 49 Top 40 singles, 32 number one hits, an Academy Award for I Just Called to Say I Love You, a staggering 25 Grammy Awards and a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. His participation in the massive "We Are the World campaign” against famine in Africa in 1985 was a milestone in the music industry. And also his involvement in fighting apartheid in South Africa is much praised.

Living legend Steve Morris was born on May 13, 1950 in Saginaw. At his birth he gets administered too much oxygen and he remains blind the rest of his life. Years later he says that it was "a gift from heaven, so I could concentrate better on my ear." That Stevie is a true Wonder-child, becomes clear at the age of 12 when Little Stevie Wonder is offered a record contract and he scores a direct hit with his first number one single Fingertips - Pt2. Thanks to his energetic performances little Stevie scored many hits and at 15-years old he is already world famous.
Juan Luis Guerra
Juan Luis Guerra did what no Dominican ever did before: make an international success of the upbeat party music (the merengue) from the Caribbean. This wasn’t a ride in the park. Where other merengue artists recorded their songs in one try, Guerra spent months in the studio to find the perfect balance in his music.

The great international success came when he made his fifth album, ‘Bachata Rosa’. It was the first time that Caribbean street music was played in a modern way. Exotic, yet Western. Dreamy, but still swinging. Entertainment, but with intellectual pretensions. This success resulted in many stadium concerts around the world and a lot of great albums.
Chucho Valdes & Afro Cuban Messengers
One of the best jazz musicians from Cuba. When he was just 3 years old, little Chucho started playing the piano. Thirteen years later this leads to his first band. But it wasn’t till 1973 that he became successful with his third band Irakere.

Valdes and his band made over 85 albums and he became a rollmodel in the jazz world. He also cooperated on 33 albums of fellow artists and toured around 50 countries only in 2009. Be amazed, like millions before you, by the unique sound of this amazing Cuban.
Rubén Blades
This all-rounder from Panama is a settled name in latin, jazz and salsa music, but even when he is not on stage he’s a busy man. Besides being an actor, songwriter and lawyer, Blades is also politically active in his home country, where he even ran for president in 1994.

Fortunately for his fans, he now focuses on his greatest passion, music. When hearing the swinging sounds of Pedro Navaja, it's hard not to move. And with Patria, which is considered the second national anthem in his home country, Blades makes sure that he won’t disappear from the hearts of latin, jazz and salsa lovers for some time.
Dionne Warwick
Five-time Grammy winner Dionne Warwick proved to be a true legend in the field of R&B and soul music during the last decades. With over 60 major worldwide hits during her 48-year career, Warwick managed to settle in the hearts of many fans and music lovers, where she has stayed ever since.

With great hits like Don’t Make Me Over, Anyone Who Had a Heart and Message to Michael Dionne Warwick settled in the music business since the start of her successful solo career. Still, she found her greatest success many years later when she proved to be a true pioneer by becoming the first major artist, along with Elton John and Steve Wonder, to join the fight against AIDS with the worldwide number 1 hit That's What Friends Are For.
Roberto Fonseca
Roberto Fonseca is one of the young Cuban musicians who are privileged to work with the golden generation of this Caribbean island. Born in 1975 and raised in a musical family, he played piano since he was eight. However, he preferred percussion, which is still noticeable when you hear him play. His percussion-driven piano style became Fonseca’s trademark over the years.

His musical career took a huge leap forward when he was invited to support Rubén González in the Orquesta de Ibrahim Ferrer. That opened doors to celebrities like Omara Portuondo, Cachaíto López and many other Cuban All Stars, with which he has performed throughout the world. This wealth of musical encounters can be heard on his last two albums ‘Zamazu’ and ‘Akokan’.
Ronchi Matthew
As a jazz pianist, composer and arranger Ronchi Matthew is a versatile artist who already has an exceptional career since the age of fourteen. Graduated from the Conservatory of Puerto Rico, it’s no surprise that he played with several international artists including Carla Thomas, Izaline Calister, Zamana Kitoki and the Curaçao Latin Jazz Ensemble.

In 1980 Matthews set a new trend by combining jazz with native work songs. This combination became a large success and set a new standard for all jazz musicians from Curaçao. As a composer he won the CBU festival in Guyana with his composition Loving You Is My Life.

Cooler temperatures, yeah.

I moved into a new 34m² apartment this summer and it's been hellishly hot for the last two months. It's okay if I don't wear anything than a towel around my waist and keep the windows open, but I haven't really dared to invite anyone over here. I'll probably have to look for a new place sooner or later, but I'm looking forward to the temperature cooling down so that I can at least do stuff here while wearing pants.
