Can Anyone Recommend Good "Anti Virus" Software?

[Besides Norton (I hate Norton) & AVG]

I've lately trying to find an anti-virus program that will offer good protection, & not make my system run slow. I was using Panda Cloud (free version) & it was decent, but then I just recently started using Bitdefender, & it has my system running so sloooow. I'm looking for one that I can just download & install. Any suggestions?

Why do you dislike AVG? It's THE best anti-virus software.

I used AVG, it really slowed down my computer a lot (it was an old computer, however). It was almost unusable, in fact, and I could not turn it off for more than 10 minutes at a time.

My new computer had Norton, and I did not really ever notice that it was there, which I suppose is a good thing

Did you try the latest version? It's smoother than the earlier ones.

Norton has fucked me over too many times...AVG pretty much does the same thing to me, & I have a newer laptop that I'm using.....

Malwarebytes freezes up my computer on startup. Advance system care is awesome though....

don't run it from start up...check to see how much junk you got runing on start up, you'll be surprised.Malwarebytes is your second line of defence and should be manually run when needed.

Does this have everything a computer needs to be protected? I'm no computer expert but I thought viruses were all we had to worry about, come to find that there is malware and spyware too! and who knows what else is out there I dont know about sigh

I have AVG, Malwarebytes (which only works in safemode for some reason) and Spybot, so far all these seem to have kept my computer somewhat clean confused

I wouldn't bother with spybot, it's a bit to light and fluffy to find the real nastys.

If Malwarebytes isn't working for you try... SuperAntiSpyware-Free-Edition

Microsoft Security Essentials

Ad Block Plus on Firefoc=x

Malwarebytes

Have those 3 and you will never ever get a virus again. I haven't had a problem in a year...and I download everything and visit any type of site.

If you really want, I recommend having Mcafee Site advisor too. It warns you which site is safe and which is not whenever you google something.

Avast! It's free, and it gets rid of viruses. Also, trying Superantispyware for malware and trojans, and tracking cookies (even if they aren't that harmful).

I know people don't want to hear it, but the new Norton that you can get for free though Comcast is a GREAT product. It does a great job of actually, ya know, fighting viruses and does a ton work otherwise. I've installed it on four seperate computers (one desktop and three laptops) and nobody has had any virus or performance issues since.

The only negative with this version of Norton so far is that they aren't keeping up with Firefox versions. So the SafeWeb only works up to Firefox 3.16.18

Prior to this new Norton version I did install a paid copy of Avast! on my mothers computer and she has been problem free ever since (over a years). For her, Avast! works great because she doesn't have to do anything technically complicated.

As always, if you are actually having a problem that you can't fix go to download.com and install SpyBot Search & Destroy (uncheck the teatime and system startup options and always do an update on the main interface before you run it). I put this on every computer I work on. It doesn't ALWAYS work, but it often finds the weird crap that the big, always on software misses.

Lastly, try all this stuff. These days everything seems to work different depending on what type of hardware/software you are running, how old your PC is, how you use it and what evil is already lurking inside it's circuits. The only way to figure out what works best for you is trial and error. The good thing in this regard is that you can't really hurt anything if you're using trusted products and you're likely to find a lot of crap on your PC in the process.

Also, if you use Firefox and are concerned about cookies/tracking, try Ghostery and set it to block EVERYTHING. I love it. I stopped getting strange emails relating to the websites I visit almost immediately.

I've heard a lot of people complain about Norton, but it's works exceptionally well for me. I've tried most of the others through the years, and find that Norton is the most comprehensive and reliable.

I suppose people know that you don't just install it and let it go! You need to tweak the settings for your specific usage needs. Right now, I wouldn't even consider another AV program.
