It's really odd. A couple of weeks ago, one of my friends was giving a presentation, and

while we were watching her presentation, I noticed that she had written some material

on our "parking lot" board---that's a board that we write items of discussion on which

are out of scope for the meeting but that we will get to should we have time or that

we will take home and resolve before the next meeting.

Anyways, on her parking lot board, she'd written all of the action items in cursive.

The penmanship was quite beautiful, but I commented on it saying, "Cursive? You

still write in cursive?" I wish I hadn't asked the question because it derailed the

conversation. More or less you could say that I'm guilting of jacking in real life

meetings more so than threads.

Anyways, I discovered many Thai students can also write in English cursive.

They may murder the grammar and spelling, but the style and script of their writing

is often quite beautiful.

I just didn't see what the point was of learning cursive any longer. It's not a

difficult trait to learn, so it's not like we'll lose the ability to decipher historical

documents written in this style. And nobody writes business letters in pen any

longer. And anyway you look at it, it's much easier to read a student

essay written in print than cursive.

What is your opinion? Should it still be taught? If so, what's the point? Are you evil?

can you imagine any official document being written today in cursive, much less one that changes the course of history? Look how amazing the writing is, though! My chicken scratch cannot even be read by anyone but me!

This is a tough subject for me ~ I was taught and know how to write cursive BUT I never do ~ not even my "legal" sigs are in cursive

I print and I can honestly say I never write in cursive ( since my early 20s )

Maybe it's neater when writing faster. I know when I write quickly the letters seem to meld together even though I don't write in cursive

I actually have come up with my own hodgepodge of print/cursive over the years.

shit is outdated, antiquated and should go the route of calligraphy. not gone, but no damn need to teach that shit anymore.

I stopped writing primarily in cursive once I got to college, and even then I only wrote in cursive when I had to write essays for my midterms and finals. Since then the only time I write in cursive (other than my signature) is when I am sending a personal handwritten letter or birthday/x-mas card to friends and family.

But thanks to the internet and cell phone texting, any type of penmanship is quickly becoming a thing of the past. You have a whole generation of kids who are more comfortable in front of a keypad than with a pen or pencil. It's ironic that we have evolved from communicating from great, lengthy handwritten opuses to 140 character tweets.

I write in a sort of printing/cursive hybrid.

Most definitely. I'm a secretary so taking messages is a part of my job. I used to print them but when the other line started ringing, I stopped that real quick. I write faster in cursive than in print. And if I write down things that my boss wants me to type in a memo, it's much quicker to write them in cursive than in print. I keep telling her I can type much faster than I can write so just tell me what she wants and I'll type while she talks but she won't do that. She's determined she's going to get me to "abbreviate" when I write to make it faster but she's got an uphill battle because I hate to abbreviate. I don't like to do something that I might get used to that might affect me when I get ready to turn something important for someone to see. Bad habits are easy to form and I'd hate for it to look like some damn princebonics.

I have quite nice cursive script, the master writes in all caps, he gives me a shopping list, and when I'm at the supermarket I read it and imagine him shouting at me TOMATOES!!! EGGS!!!

One of the people I work with writes in all caps sometimes and it gets on my nerves when it comes to typing out a purchase requisition form and memo for some equipment that she needs that I've never heard of. I never know if it's a piece of machinery that I've never heard of that shouldn't be capitalized or if it's the brand name of the machinery that should be capitalized.
