THIS BUFFALO GAL IS A REAL DIVA

Monday, 09.05.2011 / 10:18 AM / News
By Kevin Snow - Sabres.com
© 2011 World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

When the lights go down and the pyrotechnics kick off the WWE’s Night of Champions here in Buffalo on September 18, Buffalo’s own Beth Phoenix will likely get the same chills she got as a youngster at her first live wrestling event.

CLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS FOR WWE'S NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS AT FIRST NIAGARA CENTER ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18.

Phoenix’s long climb to WWE stardom has taken her through many places, including Canisius College. The three-time champion is one of the most feared female competitors in WWE history, with her physical style earning her the moniker of “The Glamazon.” (If you don’t think female wrestlers are tough, don’t tell that to Phoenix. She suffered a fractured jaw in 2006; and a torn ACL last May.) Lately she’s been paired with Natalya in a dynamite duo that’s been dubbed “Divas of Doom,” and they’ve already started to make life very difficult for people like Kelly Kelly and the Bella Twins.

But it all started thanks to a contest.

Phoenix was 11 years old at the time, and had her only exposure to wrestling was watching it on television with her grandmother on the weekends. Thanks to a local newspaper’s coloring contest, that would soon change.

“I had to color a picture of Undertaker and Paul Bearer for the contest,” she explains on the phone from Tampa, where she was making a stop at the WWE’s Development School. “My family didn’t have a lot of money when I was growing up, so I’d never seen wrestling in person before. I ended up winning four tickets to see a live show at the Broome County Arena in Binghamton, and the headline match was Undertaker vs. Jeff Jarrett. I was able to sneak down close to ringside and take pictures of the wrestlers as they came out. I loved everything about it. It was just so awe inspiring.”

Phoenix said she knew from a young age that she wanted to become a wrestler, and attending the live event just reinforced her passion. While attending Notre Dame High School in Elmira, NY, she had the distinction of becoming the first female varsity wrestler in school history. But being the only girl on the team was never an issue for her.

“I’ve always wanted to be one of the guys, and don’t expect to treated any differently. I’m the same way today,” says Phoenix. “Coach Weber taught me so much, and it gave me a great foundation for my future. To this day, freestyle wrestling is one of the toughest sports I’ve ever participated in.”

Unlike some female athletes that have encountered negative reactions while playing with the boys, that wasn’t the case for Phoenix.

“Not at all. In fact, I was voted Prom Queen by my classmates in my senior year. So I went from being a wrestler to the prom queen in a year.”

Phoenix graduated high school more determined than ever to pursue a career in wrestling. But she also realized how important it was for her to go to college.

“This is a very risky business, and it’s a complete gamble to try and get into it. My parents wanted me to protect myself and have something to fall back on. I even remember reading a quote from Razor Ramon in WWF magazine where he talked about the importance of getting an education if you wanted to pursue a career in pro wrestling.”

So Phoenix enrolled at Canisius College in Buffalo, where she majored in Public Relations and Criminal Justice. In addition to juggling a full course load, she never gave up on her wrestling career.

“I used to moonlight on the weekends in spandex,” she says with a laugh. “I’d wrestle anywhere that was within driving distance of the school – Toronto, Cleveland, Boston. Basically I’d go anywhere on the East Coast that allowed me to get back to school on Monday morning and change back into my Clark Kent outfit.”

She even remembers one particular show near Pittsburgh that was, well, sparsely attended.

“It was at a small arena, and there were only six people there. I’m pretty sure they were all immediate relatives of some of the wrestlers. But the show went on.”

After earning her degree, Phoenix remained in Buffalo for a few years working various jobs. Even though her childhood passion was wrestling, it was during this time that she really came to appreciate Buffalo sports fans.

“I’m very proud to represent Buffalo in the WWE. There is so much hometown pride in the Sabres and Bills. You just get so consumed in it. I don’t think you can live in Western New York and not be a fan of either team.”

Phoenix hopes that Western New Yorkers will be out in full force to support her at First Niagara Center when she enters the ring at the Night of Champions, and says that fans should “expect nothing from the best from me as always.”

And if she has a chance to raise the championship belt at home, maybe Phoenix will look down to see a young girl at ringside with the same awestruck look in her eyes that she had 19 years ago at that arena in Binghamton.

Triple H interview:

CM Punk's controversial promo on June 27: "Punk said something about doofus, but he called John Laurinitis douchebag, which is way worse, right? The joke in the back was "at least I'm just a doofus, you're a douchebag." If you look at it from that standpoint, he called me a doofus, Stephanie an idiot and Johnny a douchebag, and everyone said "Oh my God!" He tore the roof off the place! He ripped the veil off! And it was like the most crazy promo of all time!" 5 years ago, no one would have blinked. That would have been a tame segment. Everyone would have looked at that promo and said "So what?" he didn't say anything. In order for that to get the reaction that it did, we had to go where it had to go.

"I think sometimes, people think we bumble through this. Especially, and I don't mean this disparagingly, the internet fan I think sometimes thinks that we throw darts at the wall and fumble around to see what we can come up with next. I mean there is actually a plan to a lot of this stuff, but things change. It's live television, and people react certain ways and things don't happen the way you expect them too, and you have to make changes. But there is a plan to a lot of this."

Midcard talent possibly being affected by WWE's rebranding: "Well I don't think the end of the brands is here at all. I think it's for a period of time, it's trying to give the best shows that we can. If I was a mid-card guy or lower end, certainly I would look at that and go "Oh man, the spot that could have been mine is now Randy Orton's". To me, I'm a big believer, You know everyone thinks we make the stars. The guys make themselves. We follow what the fans want. Make yourself relevant. Go out and make yourself relevant. If you have been doing the same thing for years, and you have been getting the same reaction, and you're in the same spot, change. We tell the guys that all the time and yet they don't do it. We try to help them.

"There is just a different mentality, guys have to be willing and I think a lot of them think that they do, but they have to be willing to go out there and take it. They got to be willing to step on toes. They got to be willing to jump ahead. It's a business. Be willing to step up and not take no for an answer. I have been a big believer that if you're good enough, the cream rises to the top and you will get the spot."

The PG product: "We had pushed the envelope so far and you get to a point that after a while, its like, Vince will always use this expression, even though it was completely irrelevant from a timeframe standpoint, but we had "Chainsaw Charlie". Where do you go after a guy with a chainsaw? But there is a certain point and time where you heard all this stuff on TV you have to pull it back to a point where it almost becomes sterile to get back to a point where you can begin to touch the envelope again where people go "OOH! Like we made it so sterile, like when CM Punk said Ass for the first time, people were like "Oh My God, he said ass!" Where ass was said every 4 seconds for a while. We have to pull it back. Will we ever get where we were before? No, because the world has changed.

"I just don't think you can kind of do that programming now, with the way that the world is. We will never get back all the way there. But I think there is definitely a huge gap between where we were and where we went to. But I think for the right reasons. You have to get to a point where you almost sterilize it to make it seem edgy again. If you just back it off a little bit, it kind of seems a little watered down. So we just took it to where it needed to go to get it back to where it needed to be."

Another Trips interview:

VIDEO: HHH Speaks On New Talent, CM Punk, More

Triple H appeared on FOX Business this morning to promote WWE and his new movie "Inside Out".

The on-air WWE COO talked about things always changing in pro wrestling. He said, “We can change with the times. We just kind of evolve and go where the fans want us to go. That’s what Vince McMahon and the company has always been genius at is keeping their finger on the pulse of what our fans want.”

Triple H also talked about WWE recruiting new talents across the globe. “We scour the globe and we’re going to find them now and bring them to us rather than just letting them find us.”

He also added that his future in the ring will be very limited after the match against CM Punk at Night of Champions.

They're really trying hard to troll the kids and gullibles by posting this B.S. news story on their website. At first, I wasn't even going to report it here, but just for shits and giggles, I figured why not. Like we don't believe Nash'll be back during the no-DQ Trips/Punk match at NOC. disbelief

http://www.wwe.com/inside...h-released

Kevin Nash released

WWE has come to terms on the release of WWE Superstar Kevin Nash as of Monday, Sept. 5, 2011. We wish Kevin the best in all future endeavors.

Kevin Nash tweeted the following:

"To set the record straight, I passed physical w/ flying colors. Cardiologist was amazed at my lipid profile. Couldn't reach financial terms.

I will not be addressing this matter again. I am moving forward with my life. Cena, it was great having the chance to get to know you."

As noted earlier, this has been confirmed as part of the storylines. Look for him to return at the WWE Night of Champions pay-per-view. Nash is telling people he's been released to sell the angle. Kind of sad when WWE tries to work the internet.

LMAO!! As if we expected anything different!! Orlando Sentinel's Roger Moore rips Trips's new "movie" Inside Out. falloff

http://blogs.orlandosenti...e-out.html

Movie Review: Inside Out

World Wrestling Entertainment’s brief flirtation with family friendly films has ended. But the residue of this effort sticks to “Inside Out,” a half-hearted return to the violent men of the ring doing violent things on the screen model that predated the PG years.

And they refuse to abandon their efforts to turn one of their stars into the next Rock or Hulk Hogan, a crossover phenomenon about to carry movies and TV shows, and not just other wrestlers and folding chairs.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque has the look, the demeanor and the skills to be a useful heavy in other people’s action films. He’s so muscle-bound, his arms can’t quite drop to his side. His face is more scary than handsome. Yet “Inside Out” is yet another attempt to make him a leading man.

Levesque plays an ex-con, A.J., whom we meet the day he gets out of a 13 year stretch in a Louisiana prison. He re-connects with Jack, played by the motor-mouthed goombah Michael Rapaport. Jack’s a former running mate, a low-rent gangster who is the son of another low-rent gangster. Counterfeit cigarettes is his game.

“What are you gonna do?” Jack wants to know.

“I’m gonna make pickles,” A.J. growls.

Jack didn’t visit his pal in prison, and took up with and married A.J.’s ex-girlfriend (Parker Posey). He’s determined to drag the hulking A.J. back into “the life,” and keep his veterinarian-mobster dad (Bruce Dern) off his back.

But A.J. has nowhere else to go. Mom’s in a nursing home. So he moves in with Jack, his wife and his teenage daughter. “Inside Out” could have gone the way of WWE’s last Levesque vehicle — “The Chaperone.” There’s a teenager, a guy wanting to stay out of trouble and make pickles, Rapaport bellyaching about his life.

“I don’t care how bad prison was. Middle class is worse.”

There’s also a hapless state tobacco control agent trying to bust this cigarette smuggling ring, at all costs, a role sort of played for laughs by Julie White (Shia’s mom in the “Transformers” movies).

But the profanity and alcohol abuse tip us that this movie is going darker. There are shootings, bodies to be dealt with.

Lawyer-turned-screenwriter Dylan Schaffer’s script is an unhappy combination of genres, tones, too many dead stretches of people in cars and inept dialogue. Rapaport’s tiresome patter doesn’t allow for the weak laughs to land.

“Why do I gotta drive the hybrid? God gave us the internal combustion engine for a reason!”

And the single resonant line about prison comes too late to give the movie the tone they might have been going for. Asked, fearfully, about jail time, A.J. intones, “You just sit there — and it passes.”

That’s a pretty fair description of “Inside Out,” too. Dern could have played this mobster whose cover job is running an animal hospital a seriously strange or seriously silly spin. But he has nothing to play. Parker Posey does her best to hide that this is just a WWE paycheck part.

And Levesque does nothing to suggest that if the WWE weren’t backing him that he’d ever be anything on screen other than the guy who beats the heck out Jason Statham or whoever in someone else’s action picture.

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Cast: Paul “Triple H” Levesque, Michael Rapaport, Parker Posey, Bruce Dern, Julie White

Credits: Directed by Artie Mandelberg, written by Dylan Schaffer, produced by Mike Pavone. A WWE Studios/Samuel Goldwyn release. Running time: 1:33.

Man, this whole CM Punk thing got me really back into WWE. Just as he 'stole' the title and left, I thought "I know, lets give this another go" Ive been a wrestling fan since i was 2, and in 19 years of watching...its garbage! I really enjoyed CM Punk's shoots, but now theyre getting reptitive. Its good to see HHH back in the ring, as he's one of my all time favourites, but this whole Nash thing is crazing me, theyre grabbing at anything to try and get publicity.

They're letting too much good talent go as well sad

I got more hits than Madonna's got kids!

Oh, this is so rich!! lol This pic was taken at the Smackdown tapings last night right as the SD announce crew were sitting down to set up for the SD show. This is basically right as the dark match between Johnny Curtis and Trent Baretta was beginning.

That's fuckin' pathetic!! About 15 minutes prior to showtime, and this is the turn out. I can't imagine it filled up too much more than this. This is the result of the incredibly bad booking they've had for the past couple of years. disbelief

Smackdown Spoilers (to be aired on 9/9/11):

Mark Henry comes out to open the show. He reminds the crowd about everyone he has taken out and says Randy Orton is next at WWE Night of Champions. Zack Ryder comes out and says Henry will face Orton tonight. Henry lays out Ryder and ends up having to face Ezekiel Jackson up next.

Mark Henry defeated Ezekiel Jackson. Jackson showed promise at first, dominating Henry but it didn't take long for Henry to counter and give him the World's Strongest Slam and follow it with the pinfall victory.

Sin Cara defeated Tyson Kidd.

Josh Matthews interviews Cara and says that he's not sure that Cara speaks English but we are seeing a more aggressive side of him in recent weeks. Cara says that this is the real him and he was holding back out of respect for the WWE talent but now he's not holding back anymore. Daniel Bryan comes out and challenges Cara to a rematch next week, only to be attacked by Cara.

World champ Randy Orton vs. Intercontinental champ Cody Rhodes is tonight's main event. Sheamus vs. Wade Barrett is also set.

Matt Striker interviews Randy Orton backstage, discussing the Rhodes bout.

WWE Divas Champion Kelly Kelly vs. Natalya w/Beth Phoenix. Kelly Kelly is beat up the majority of the match but Kelly Kelly rolled Natalya up out of a Sharpshooter attempt to get the pinfall victory.

Christian comes out and complains about Teddy Long not being fair by making the tag match on Monday's Raw Supershow and he wants another shot at Randy Orton and the World Heavyweight Championship. Sheamus interrupts, telling Christian to quit crying and to get out of the ring because he has a match. Christian exits and Wade Barrett comes out to face Sheamus.

Sheamus defeated Wade Barrett via disqualification when Christian came back out and helped Barrett beat down Sheamus. Prior to Christian returning to ringside, the match was back and forth. Sheamus ended up fighting off both Barrett and Christian and clearing the ring.

WWE Tag Team Champions Evan Bourne & Kofi Kingston defeated Jinder Mahal & The Great Khali in a similar bout to what they had last night. After the match, Mahal complains about Khali losing. Triple H comes out and gives him the pedigree twice and leaves.

- Cody Rhodes came out talking about his face and himself and Ted DiBiase.

- Randy Orton defeated Cody Rhodes.

God, this sounds like a suck ass show!!! disbelief

Damn, that's something I'd expect from a TNA live show lol but even they looked like they were in a packed house during the last episode of Impact falloff

It's annoying when people overhype the Attitude Era because there was A LOT of wack shit during that period. I remember watching Raw during 1997-2003, and they had a lot of moments that when they start showing the 1999-2001 episodes of Raw on WWE Classics On Demand, I'll be skipping over. Case in point: the Mark Henry/Mae Young angle neutral

Yeah, there were some dumb moments, but on the whole, it was an exciting time!! Not EVERY single thing on either Raw or SD was Emmy worthy, and no one's saying that. I like watching the 1994-97 years of Raw more than 1998-2002, probably because although it was 10 years ago, it still feels like yesterday and I still can't be bothered with watching the Triple H/Stephanie overkill from 2000-2002. I HATED the McMahon/Helmsley angle lol

Yeah there were definitely a lot of stupid moments during the Attitude Era.

Yeah, there were some dumb moments, but on the whole, it was an exciting time!! Not EVERY single thing on either Raw or SD was Emmy worthy, and no one's saying that. But, you never knew what they were going to hit you with next. And I think it's that mentality and excitement that all of us adult/AE fans truly miss.

True. lol

When you look back at the old 1995-97 episodes of Raw AND Nitro, you see a lot of crap

Nitro's first couple of months were particularly TURRIBLE neutral lol

Ugh don't remind me of Nitro's early days. disbelief lol

I could only take a few seconds of this. He just seems like another loser who can't get over the fact that the Attitude Era is over.

Really? He's going after John Cena's young fans?

I hate when people act like there was never a period before the Attitude Era.

They act like the WWE didn't cater to kids and families for the majority of its existence. At least it's been that way since Vince bought the company from his old man.

Kids and families have always been the main viewers of professional wrestling.

He says the WWE sucks because they only push guys who sell the most merch and not the guy who's the best in the company?

That's the way they've ALWAYS pushed guys! Wrestling is a business!

Yeah, I remember!

falloff

The funny thing about that character is so many of the southern rasslin' fans hated that character and chanted "faggot" at him not realizing that they paid money (or maybe they didn't since this was WCW 2000) to see a bunch of scantily clad dudes "perform" for them!

JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Probably around February or March. He's been doing this since maybe '07. He'll pop around November-February, announce his match for Wrestlemania, win at WM, then leave for the rest of the year lol

Can you blame The Undertaker? Getting to fuck Michelle McCool night in and night out or most likely wrestling Kane or Barrett?

Even Taker knows that the WWE is sucking almost as hard as Michelle is every night. smile

Jeff Hardy sentenced to jail

Jeff Hardy has been sentenced today, September 8, to ten days in jail, 30 months of probation and a $100,000 fine stemming from his arrest back in September 2009. This sentence is part of a plea deal that will keep him out of a much longer prison sentence.

Hardy pled guilty to two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver a controlled substance and a single count of conspiracy to traffic in a substance containing opium, all of which are felonies. He also agreed to remain in a drug abuse treatment program. All other counts against Hardy were dropped, again due to the plea agreement reached.

The court allowed a request from Hardy’s lawyer that he is allowed to travel outside of his home state of North Carolina in order to continue his work for TNA Wrestling.

He was originally arrested on September 11, 2009, when police found 262 Vicodin prescription pills, 180 soma prescription pills, 555 milliliters of anabolic steroids, a residual amount of powder cocaine and drug paraphernalia after a search of his house. He was indicted on January 4, 2010. He faces five felonies, a misdemeanor charge and a conspiracy charge.

His original charges included:

- Felony possession of cocaine
- Felony drug trafficking of opium
- Felony possession with intent to redistribute a Schedule III drug (two counts)
- Maintaining a dwelling for drug use and/or distribution
- Possession of drug paraphernalia (misdemeanor)
- Conspiracy to traffic opium for trafficking four or more grams but less than fourteen grams of opium/heroin.

He made his return to TNA Wrestling on the August 25 Impact Wrestling television tapings in Huntsville, Alabama. That taped appearance will air tonight, September 8, on Impact. The show airs at 8 PM CST on Spike TV.

It's about time this shit was over and not have postponement after postponement after postponement. He'll probably spend half of his 10 days in jail and then be out. He would only have 18 months of probation left if he didn't keep postponing this shit for a year. disbelief
