Tyler Perry Reportedly Following Oprah, Launching New Cable Network

Tyler Perry is reportedly following in the footsteps of his good friend Oprah Winfrey and launching a new cable network, this according to The New York Times.

The NYT reports that Perry and Lionsgate will launch the new network initially playing reruns of his shows like "House Of Payne" and "Meet The Browns" before buying "third-party content that meshes with Mr. Perry's Christianity-tinged brand."

A source tells the publication that the network is tentatively titled "Tyler TV."

Lionsgate and Mr. Perry have declined to comment on The New York Times' story.

I like Tyler alright, some things not so much, but if this is something I gotta pay for nope. Personally, I can't imagine what will fill up the time, of the 2 shows on do people spend all day watching those on marathons or something?

I say, with a bit of trepidation, that maybe it could work. While I have mixed reactions to Perry's films and am not a fan of House Of Payne AT ALL...the existence of a network would provide jobs to a lot of black folk in the industry who simply aren't working as much as they'd like because the film and television industry is dominated by people who don't look like them and aren't interested in telling their stories or showcasing their talent. Tyler has gambled and won in the past taking his chitterling circuit stage plays to box office success so if he has planned it correctly and has enough shows (and a variety at that) to get a network started then more power to him. Besides, has anyone watched Lifetime and Oxygen Networks? PURE CRAP!

We shall see. But I'm a skeptic, given what's already on tv, the idea of more tv showing the same re-runs isn't making me hopeful. But okay, the employment factor would be a plus, at least getting the skills for the resume always a good thing.

Very happy for him! This is a very good investment for Tyler & his many followers. I hope he does right by it & put more inspirational programming on there besides the comedy sitcoms. I wonder what will happen to his other shows on TBS?

What I wanna know is, what is up with his scriptwriters for House of Payne & Meet The Browns? And with Tootie (Kim Fields) being so much a part of these shows how has the bar not been raised for their content? The movies and plays I don't mind so much- they play well to a lot of church audiences I know and that's fine. But one day I looked for his tv shows on line out of boredom, and looking specifically for one Tootie directed, and I was mortified at how poor it was.

What's sad as this she has been directing for some time now. She got her directing chops back when Living Single aired. I can't stomach either of those shows but then again I'm not a big fan of sitcoms in general. Maybe just that one show you saw was horrible. I know it only took one viewing to make me want to puke.

I am not the biggest fan of everything he does, but some of his work I really enjoyed. I dont think he should be held to a different standards....i cannot think of any network where I like EVERYTHING on the channel, and I'm sure many on this thread can agree.

I wish his success, just as I would anyone who dares to pursue something amazing.
