Sony/PIAS Warehouse Burnt Down in UK Riots Fucked up. A little more forethought put into your riots would be appreciated, Londoners.
Sony/PIAS Warehouse Burnt...n UK Riots
Hundreds of independent labels and record stores affected
A Sony distribution warehouse in North London was burned to the ground around 4:00 a.m. GMT this morning during the third straight night of riots in the UK, as the BBC reports. The 200,000 square-foot center housed the entire inventory of PIAS UK, the primary distribution hub for more than 150 independent labels..
No injuries were reported in the blaze, but all inventory is feared lost. XL/Beggars, Warp, Rough Trade, Domino, 4AD, Sub Pop, Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, Drag City, Thrill Jockey, FatCat, Kompakt, Mute, Ninja Tune, Vice, and Soul Jazz are among those affected. Prior to the blaze, the manager of Rough Trade East Tweeted that Trumans Brewery, the arts and media quarter that houses the store, was on lockdown and that the store had to be closed "as a precaution to ensure staff and customers can get home safe tonight." Today, Rough Trade is encouraging customers to assist in cleanup around the city.

How do you know that the blaze didn't start somewhere else and spread to that place? Don't assume stuff. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

What?! Make sense please. If the rioters started a fire, ANY fire, and it then moved to this building they still burned down this building. However...

From this website... http://www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/Music/2011/08/09/Sony-warehouse-burned-to-ground-in-London-riots/UPI-91551312898746/
The BBC said the building was home to the United Kingdom's biggest distributor of independent music, Pias, as well.
Memphis Industries, one of the labels Pias handles, said via Twitter: "All the stock we got left is sitting in our office. Devastated is the word."
"For us, it's devastating. It's a lot of labels that are distributed by Pias," Spencer Hickman from the Rough Trade East record store told the BBC. "It's complete chaos. We don't know how long it's going to take them to get back on their feet. It looks like people have lost everything that was in the warehouse. I'm sure there are labels which aren't insured. I'm sure there will be labels that will go bust."
Several movie theaters also closed their doors Monday night but were expected to reopen Tuesday if the situation allowed, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Sony Distribution Centre Burned in London Riots (Updated)http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-08-09/sony-distribution-centre-burned-in-london-riots
Three storey, 20,000 square metre Enfield building goes up in flames; Beez confirms it was using warehouse.
Among the buildings burned in the London riots on Monday night was the Pias/Sony Distribution Centre in Enfield. Sony is responsible for disc replication for most U.K. DVD and Blu-ray companies. Pias is the U.K.'s largest home entertainment distributor. Beez Entertainment has confirmed that it was using the warehouse (see below): According to the ITP.net website:
Sony has announced that deliveries of CDs and DVDs across Britain could be delayed after its only warehouse for content products in the UK, situated in North London, caught fire, according to the BBC. Beez Entertainment posted the following on its twitter feed:
"We'd like to apologize to fans just now - there will be a slowdown in stock dispatch due to our warehouse burning down in the riots. The important thing is that at least from reports no workers were hurt. We're working as quickly as possible to find solutions but it will take a little bit of time to fix, thanks for your patience on this. (...) Right now all we know is the place was torched. Best case: There's stock left and things can be brought on track quickly. Worst case will take longer. Also worth mentioning is it's not our staff - but was at Sony DADC's warehouse. Their staff are reported to be OK though." MVM posted on its facebook page that "Due to the recent rioting and fires one of the building's that stored Beez stock has been burnt so there may be a delay in acquiring Beez stock for the next few weeks." Later, the Guardian newspaper reported that "a large portion of the DVD stock belonging to UK film distributors has been destroyed, including films released by the BFI, Artificial Eye and Dogwoof." The label Masters of Cinema tweeted that "We're just one of hundreds of independent labels who have lost all their stock in the Sony DADC fire at Enfield." Update More information added, thanks to Shiroi Hane for links. Update 2 The trade paper Variety has reported further details:
Up to 30 million discs are believed to have been lost in the fire, which has destroyed the building.

Everyone that lives here knows what is going on and it is obviously not about protesting. It is sheer ignornance, lack of respect and boredom amoung youths taking advantage of a terrible situation. Btw, there was also a massive family owned furniture store that was 125 years old in same location until it was burnt down and destroyed a few nights ago about 7 miles from where I live.

there is a sri lankan gentleman in tears on the news about how his convenience store was trashed. not just looted, but the ceiling, walls, floors, shelves, everything violently destroyed. he states his life, his ability to put food on the table, have been totally derailed. he worked hard to build something up and violent, thieving thugs ruined it overnight.
meanwhile the british government opines it 'might' have to go so far as to use rubber bullets on these thugs???? wow. now there's a strong response to the evil wrongdoers who are ruining other people's lives and livelihoods. how's that for sending a message.

From the WaRP News page...
All of Warp's UK warehouse stock appears to have been lost in the fire. The Sony DADC warehouse also acted as our international distribution hub and so this has affected our ability to supply our overseas partners. Bleep's current stash of Warp CD/LP stock remains unaffected of course.
Forthcoming albums - CANT's 'Dreams Come True' (Sep 12th), Plaid's 'Scintilli' (Sept 26th) and Rustie's 'Glass Swords' (Oct 10th) - are currently being manufactured. We know PIAS are working hard to get alternative distribution in place and we are hopeful that the release dates of these albums will not be affected. Most UK copies of Battles' new single 'My Machines' have been destroyed, although the single will still be released digitally on Monday - with some limited 12inch stock available at Bleep

I have tried to stay away from commenting on the actual riots, but I think that's a little bit pussy-like, so let me say this...
PROTEST and RIOT are two completely different words with VASTLY different meanings.
Protesting, I believe, should be an inalienable human right. We should be allowed to congregate and get as loud as we like about ANYTHING that is pissing us off enough to make that happen. In the Bay Area this has happened many times, often on a very large scale. Never was it about stealing goods and burning buildings. It was about a group (or groups) of people who were pissed off about something and they wanted everyone around them to know it. Its very effective in that it causes a lot of people to talk about the issue and maybe learn some things they didn't know before.
Rioting, on the other hand, hurts people. It hurts them financially, mentally and sometimes even physically. If someone is going to riot, like, if they HAVE to riot to get their point across, target buildings that are appropriate. Random destruction does nothing to further your cause or get people interested in what you're angry about. In fact, in most cases it will only make more people look down at the point you're trying to make and ignore your issue(s). Particularly when you're stealing and destroying property that belongs to people who are just as poor as you and may have worked HARDER than you to get it. Tearing down a government office, court house or a police station? Now THAT will get somebodies attention with a quickness. Starting a bonfire in front of a political leaders home? Yep, you'll get a response. Even something non-violent, like blocking traffic on a major street, possibly near to or around large financial building - something like that makes people look and wonder why you would be willing to put yourself in that situation. Looting and destroying you local corner store - that just makes you look like an asshole criminal.
Edit: I spelled PROTEST wrong up at the top... it said PROTERST.
