What Is It About Vinyl.....????

My niece & nephew spent some time at my crib recently, & they saw some of my record collection. Their both teenagers [15 & 16] who only really know about CD's & Ipod's. They asked me what was so special about records & I really couldn't explain it to them.....instead, I just showed them. I played them the CD version of "Let's Go Crazy", then I played them The vinyl version of it & they were blown away. I then played some Stevie & MJ for them as well, but that's just it, even with all of the new technology, you would think music would really sound a lot better today than it did decades ago, but it doesn't. Vinyl sounds better than everything imho!!! I could give a shit about Flac., MP3, & any other computer format can eat a dick! Why does vinyl sounds so good? The music is so much more alive on vinyl. I can feel the kicks, the bass is deeper, the grooves are harder....it's....just....awesome!!!!!

What are your thought about vinyl??????

I think the warmth of Vinyl, the sound itself.. Is something that still hasn't been duplicated. Nothing sounds as great as it to be honest.

I really wonder what's the reason vinyl sounds so good? Maybe i need to really do some research....

it does give some sense on authenticity...I think thats comes from some kind of emotional correlation.

I think part of the problem is that a lot of what we listen to on CD wasn't actually mastered for it. Ever listen to Sign O The Times on CD? It sounds like ass. disbelief

Plus...there's just something about dropping that needle...

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I agree with your views on vinyl. But what I like the most is not the sound, but the artwork. To me, the artwork cannot be separated from the music, and where can you find better artwork than in vinyl records?

I can't argue about the artwork. Some album even came with big posters too. I still have my poster that came with Purple Rain.... cool

More bass.

Or tighter bass.

The mixes sound tighter in general.

The different elements in the mix blend into each other in a more natural way.

When there's a slight amount of distortion introduced to the records due to them wearing out it can introduce more "drive" to the beats. Some people like that.

The excessive highs are softened in a rather pleasing way due to the format itself.

The sound of static can indeed give you a buzzy, tingly feeling.

Yup, you pretty much said everything I like. There are differences when you listen to CD remasters too [vs. the original vinyl]. Has anyone heard those Prince vinyl remasters yet? I have got to get those soon....

CD's sound kinda lifeless in comparison imo. The sound is a emptier & more canned...I have a huge CD collection to though... lol

It's ironic how sound quality is getting worse and worse. Oringal 78's (also vinyl) actually have the best sound, but unfortunately they are short and crackle. Get rid of the crackle and they sound supurb.

78's also lasted about 50 years in popularity, the longest span of popularity yet. LP's lasted about 35-40 years and CD's roughly 20-25 and still sort of going.. Lets hope MP3's carry on the trend and run it's course in half the time CD's did, as mp3 conpresses sound moreso then CD's (which can sound great). I hate MP3 sound, and Iam not an audiophile so God knows how they feel about it LOL. We have gone backwards as the general public lap up anything if its for convience and new LOL

Its the size. The weight. The tactile experience of holding the large cover and record in your hand.

Its the smell. Because cds don't HAVE a smell.

Its the large art. Gatefold sleeves. Messages in the runout grooves.

Its putting the needle on the record and getting an actual feeling from the experience. Your hand just put a piece of equipment on the record, and now its playing music.

For some people its the fact that its NOT perfect. I like mild clicks and pops so long as they doesn't affect playback.

For some people its a better sound quality. We can argue about the facts behind this until the end of the world, but lets not. For me, it sounds better and there are technical reasons for the difference. But some people just don't see (hear) it the same way.

I think what you've grown up with these days has something to do with it, though. A lot of younger people, not just kids, have simply never experienced the joy of a night drinking wine, everyone taking turns playing a few songs from a favorite record as they slowly get spread out around the room.

Its the type of music. I listen to a lot of electronic and jazz music that is still highly anticipated on vinyl. Sometimes its only released on vinyl and its a fight to find something you're looking for.

I will say again, for about the 75th time, vinyl sales have been rising for the past I don't even know how many years. It is NOT going away any time soon. In fact, its one of the very few things keeping the last remaining mom and pop brick and mortars open for business.

Records will never die. vinyl is just too awesome. I grew up off of cassettes & CD's, & I still prefer vinyl. I just wish there was some portable format equal to the sound quality of vinyl......

Not the records as much as the sleeves.

seems appropriate as I'm more music / guitar driven than pimp /image driven. His posing and heels and eyeliner I cld do without. I suppose that music / guitar go hand in hand with pimp / image so I shld look at it with more yinyang about it...but [img:$uid]http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/9826/daddypop4.gif[/img:$uid] gets on my last nerve sometimes.
