Oprah backlash over her getting an honorary Oscar

http://insideedition.com/news/6683/backlash-surfaces-over-oprah-getting-humanitarian-oscar174;.aspx

Does Oprah Winfrey really deserve an honorary Oscar®?

The Academy Awards® is under fire after selecting Oprah to receive an Oscar® for her humanitarian work.

The headline on Nikki Finke's influential website deadline.com reads, "Oprah Oscar®? Film Academy's Lousy Choice."

Finke calls the award an "ego feed" and says, "Winfrey's career and contributions to the movie business are at best spotty and superficial, especially considering that 99% of her career has been in television."

Matt Belloni, from The Hollywood Reporter, told INSIDE EDITION, "All of the controversy is surrounding the fact that she's not necessarily a film person. But there are people who have gotten the award who have not been nominated for an Oscar®, and she's been nominated for an Oscar®."

A Los Angeles Times columnist calls the Oprah pick "a boneheaded move." Another says, "Winfrey has done good work in the world, but that's not enough to merit an Oscar®."

Now the President of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences, Tom Sherak, is firing back at critics, saying, "Oprah has given and given and given. She's a member of the Academy. She was nominated for an Academy Award® and she has produced movies. This is not about personality."

Past winners of the coveted award include Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, and the last recipient, Jerry Lewis.

Yeah...

But its a humanitarian award?

Why should there be backlash?

She's a member of the acadamy and a previous nominee. Why not? Like her or not shes done a helluva lot in the humanitarian front.

Plus have you seen who they've been handing out Oscars to in the last decade.

How can you get a humanitarian OSCAR? Oscars are for acting and all things 'film'. That doesn't even make sense.

Because it doesn't make sense. It makes about as much sense as the Nobel Peace Prize people giving away MTV Movie Awards.

And not to disappoint you, but sometimes people just think others suck and it has nothing to do with wanting what they have. lol

She deserves it for what she did to Michael Jackson - pretty much publically shitting on him and kicking him when he was down.

And other reasons I don't feel like going into. If you adore her, fine, rock on, but that doesn't mean everyone else is obligated to, and that they don't out of 'jealousy'.

I can see her getting an humanitarian award. I don't see it being an Oscar. Her body of work in film in front of and behind the camera isn't extensive enough.

Not hating, just saying.

confuse If it's the Humanitarian award what's the big fucking deal? It's not for her body of work as an actor but for work as a humanitarian who happens to be adjacent to the movie industry. Many of the people who receive the Jean Hersholt award are NOT actors (Quincy Jones), most are actually producers and directors, and many are people most of us have never heard of (Walter Mirisch or M.J. Frankovich anyone?) but they were great humanitarians so again, what's the big deal???

And for the record I can't stand O, but I give her credit for her many humanitarian efforts and apparently so does the Academy. thumbs up!

It seems that way but if it's NOT for acting and many non-actors have received it, why can't she? This ain't a new award they created just for her or some shit. lol

Yes, it's probably the award that most people don't pay attention to (including me)

But you are right, and we might think Oprah has only done one movie, but she produced Beloved, Precious, and acted in Bee Movie, Charlottes Web, Princess and the Frog, and others

Yep I actually did like her role in Beloved... and let's not forget The Woman of Brewster Place, probably the best movie I've seen her do IMHO.
