I've been in your situation before (about 20 years ago). When you've decided you've had enough, the solution will come easy. People will gladly take advantage for as long as you allow them that privilege. And it's surprising how quickly a freeloader can get their shit together when they have no other alternative.

Her pounding on the bathroom door yelling at me about my water use despite the fact that the landlord didn't make her pay the water bill and didn't give a shit...

I woke up to find glass containers I'd forgotten to wash, right by the side of my bed. How I didn't end up stepping on them I don't know. When I confronted her about doing it - I kinda like having feet that aren't all cut up in ribbons - it led to a big blow-up that she used as an excuse to throw me out of her house.

All that kind of thing does is make the person staying with you feel like shit (and they probably feel like that anyway because they had to move in with you in the first place) and make them resent you intensely for it later. Plus you never know when the shoe might be on the other foot and you might end up needing them for something; the universe has a weird way of reversing people's good fortune at the drop of a hat.

BrklynBabe, I think the way to handle it is to help them look into getting some kind of state income or something and rent assistence, like someone else mentioned here earlier. That way she gets the help she needs and can get on her own two feet and you get your house back and everybody's happy.

I had a similar situation with a friend that was staying with me, long past his welcome. For more than 6 months, I'd go to work all damned day, only to come home to a sink full of dishes, trash bags piled up, and THIS MoFo still in his pajamas, bathrobe & slippers... staring out the window! OH HELL NO. I reminded him that his stay with me was not indefinite, and that he needed to get a job. After another month or so of this same shit, in the morning as I left for work, I left a tied bag of trash just inside the front door, so there could be no way he could leave the apartment while I was out, without the bag of trash being in his way. When I came home that night, he had gone out, but the bag of trash was sitting right where I left it. That's when I had enough. I sent him packing the next day, and he rarely spoke to me again. In the end, I had wound up putting up with his shit for nearly 9 months.

Last time I saw him was about 6 months after that, on skid-row in downtown Los Angeles! I was working for the Post Office, making pickups in my truck, when I drove by and spotted him in the crowd. I called out his name and he came up to the truck. I asked him what was going on. He then looked disappointed and said "Oh, I thought you were going to give me something".
