An Amazing Woman
An Iranian woman blinded and disfigured by a man who threw acid into her face stood above her attacker in a hospital operating room as a doctor was about to put several drops of acid in one of his eyes in court-ordered retribution.
The man waited on his knees and wept.
"What do you want to do now?" the doctor asked the 34-year-old woman, whose own face was severely disfigured in the 2004 attack.
"I forgave him, I forgave him," she responded, asking the doctor to spare him at the last minute in a dramatic scene broadcast on Iran's state television.
Ameneh Bahrami lost her sight and suffered horrific burns to her face, scalp and body in the attack, carried out by a man who was angered that she refused his marriage proposal. "It is best to pardon when you are in a position of power," Bahrami said in explaining her d ecision on Sunday to spare him.
The sobbing man, Majid Movahedi, said Bahrami was "very generous."
It was a change of heart from around the time when the court handed down the sentence in November 2008.
A few months later, Bahrami told a radio station in Spain, where she travelled for medical treatment after the attack, that she was happy with the ruling.
"I am not doing this out of revenge, but rather so that the suffering I went through is not repeated," she said in that March 2009 interview.
The court ruling had allowed Bahrami to have a doctor pour a few drops of the corrosive chemical in one of Movahedi's eyes as retribution based on the Islamic law system of "qisas," or eye-for-an-eye retribution.
Though she was blinded in both eyes, she said in the radio interview that the court ruled she was entitled to blind him in only one eye.
After undergoing treatment in Barcelona, Bahrami initially recovered 40 per cent of the vision in one eye, but she later lost all her sight.
Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi said Movahedi would remain in jail until a court decides on an alternative punishment, according to Iran's ISNA news agency.
He said Bahrami has sought financial compensation from her attacker for the cost of treating her injuries.
There have been several other acid attacks on women in Iran. Last week, a young woman died after a man poured acid on her face for rejecting his marriage proposal. Her attacker remains at large.

There is nothing 'good' about this news. It's Iranean propaganda to make us believe women are treated fine overthere and that women should forgive men who attack them.
The fact that men are so agressive when turned down in Iran exemplifies the male agressive ways to dominate women in Iran.
She, under pressure at a tv broadcast, forgives him, because that is what a good woman should. She should forgive the man for his agressive behaviour, he can't help himself, now can he? He's just a men.
The abovementioned woman still has to pay all her surgery and hospital bills herself. She is blind for the rest of her life and she will not get any retribution or monetary compensation from the attaker or his family, eventhough she tried to get that. Maybe her not blinding him, is because she hopes that by that gesture the court will back her up in the end by making him pay for all her medical bills.
The woman who was stoned to death because of infidelity has, after a treatment in prison, on national tv told that it was the right sentence, because she should not have cheated on her man (before her imprisonment she denied she cheated on him)
It is wise to think behind the scenes when it comes to newsstories like this. News is a fruitful agend for political propaganda!

^^^ When i first read the story i thought how selfish of me - i would have wanted him punished.... what ever way the law system in that country decided....
i couldnt really understand how she would forgive him like that - after what he did to her
i thought she was amazing because of the pain and suffering she has had to endure and because she has to live with what he did to her for the rest of her life

Exactly, that is the aim. To set an example of how a good woman should be. Not allowed to be selfish by claiming her rights.
I feel bad for the woman. She had to endure his attack and has to pay for all the bills herself. Neither can she ever have normal life again, because she is misformed and blind. And that is exactly the aim of the man who did this to her. Therefore it's a 'popular' way for man to handle a "no, thank you, I don't want to marry -enslave- you".
This man should be fined, pay for her medical bills and lifetime damage and incarcerated for several decades. His sentence should be an horrific example, so other men don't do it themselves. Now, they the standard is set, that a woman will forgive him, because it was so painful for him he was turned down by her
Yeah, she made me do it 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Now if they will just stop hanging 16 year old boys for being gay, and making up stories about them 'raping' younger boys, all will be right in Iran.
This is actually propoganda. I believe she probably earnestly felt pity and forgiveness, but the news was sent out as part of the usual Iranian campaign to put a good face on a theocracy.
My Uni here in Asia has LOTS of Iranian students who are fed up with their ultra conservative government and their parent's outdated (and often oppressive) ways.
I have a student who is 27 and has been here since he was 19. He's on his third degree

You do have a point. It would be meaningful to see what the country itself does about men who commit such crimes. She as an individual can be as forgiving as she wants, as a community this kind of behavior must be accepted as unforgivable to bring it to a stop.

I thank my lucky stars for being born in the United States. Is it true that in some Muslim countries a virgin woman/girl who has been raped can be stoned to death because she is no longer a virgin? I've also heard that in Brazil, a man can kill his wife for comming adultry and not receive a day in jail. Is that true?

Change that into islam Women are taught and shown they are inferior to men the minute they are born and must always be obedient and submissive to men Men can treat them however they see fit because that's what their fairy tale book says They're not supposed to have any self worth Just look at this case , it speaks volumes

I'm a muslim girl and was never taught and shown that I am inferior to men, so please don't tell me about my upbringing. These issues stem from pre-Islamic times in arabia that has strongly been held tight until today, and passed down along with religion as if it was all the same thing.

Thank you for your input. It must be frustrating to have people who don't know you or the intricacies of your history and culture to just slap a label on you with sweeping generalizations. Welcome to the org

You mean not every Muslima upbringing is the same everywhere?
Wow, what an insight!
BTW, how are you doing in your first week into ramadan?

i'm of two minds on this one. part of me wants the asshole who attacked this woman to suffer. to be blinded and live on as a walking object lesson in ' hey! let's not do that again.'
BUT, i admire the woman herself for exercising forgiveness. and, i think she's right. in the end, if we have to stoop to the level of the most violent among us to exact 'retribution' then we become little better than they are. which really ain't cool.
then again, there really is something to be said for a simple bullet into an asshole brain, thereby ensuring that asshole brain's set of values and behaviors do not perpetuate through reproduction and upbringing.
i just don't know

No, not every Muslima's upbringing is the same. There are muslim girls who are taught that they are inferior to men, there are muslim girls who are abused just like some people think. But that's not a majority, and that is not what Islam teaches or supports.
My first week of Ramadan is okay. I've gone completely nocturnal and I'm stuffing my face all night

Do you take extra vitamine D pills during ramadan? Lack of sunlight causes vitamine D dificiency, influencing your general health badly.

No, I never thought of it. That probably (at least partly) explains why I'm breaking out, which is really rare for me. I'm trying to change my hours anyways.
