And what I said about bands applies to movies too. If the smallest indie film in the world is playing anywhere in the states, it's playing here.

Mardi Gras. Fresh shrimp...i mean FOB to my cooler fresh. The hot creole chicks. Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, Dr. John as well as countless others. The Quarter minus the pee. Existence of seasons; the lack of seasons in CA is PAINFULLY obvious to me now.

Treme. Blacks and whites and indians lived peacefully next to each other peacefully...fully intergrated neighborhood EONS ago...before Jim Crow and "seperate but equal" policies screwed it ALL up.

Oh yeah...the first black owned newspaper

Ditto. Nothing like being able to decide at the very last minute, after work, to spend an evening in NYC. Love it.

FYI - Aretha Franklin will be performing for FREE at Coney Island, Brooklyn tonight. That's about an hour from where I am....I'm trying to convince my partner in crime (my lil sis) that we should go...

biggrin

Oh shit lol

Didn't check this thread since my last post. Not that it would make any difference as I'm currently on vacay in another state far way from N.Y.C....but thanks for the heads up though. Hope ya'll had fun if you did indeed go biggrin

Yup. Same here.

I live just north of the city and I like that I can be there quickly if I want and I like that I can go to the mountains and more rural areas easily too. nod It's nice to be able to have a change of scenery smile I live in a small town and it can be boring, but it's really beautiful here. Very mountainous and green and right by the river.

Same with me...but I love my quaint little quiet town...it's not so boring for me though. And the scenery is just so fantastic in my town that I've recently taken up photography as a hobby.

But I'm always in N.Y.C almost every weekend when I am home and not travelling and I love that I am able to do that.

Emphasising the beach culture and clean and green spaces. This hoto was taken last fall. The main city is to the north and the sea is The Hauraki Gulf, a sailing mecca and the bridge at top left is our famous Harbour Bridge. (Auckland is mostly drowned volcanoes). I took this photo on the way back from Sydney, a bigger and less friendly version of Auckland. Although both cities have a lot in common, harbour bridges, sailing, cruise ship destinations, the biggest cities of their respective countries and the melting pot of them.

[img:$uid]http://i56.tinypic.com/29mkoxd.jpg[/img:$uid]

PS Auckland has the highest populations of Tongans, Niueans, Tokelauans, Cook Islanders and very high populations of Samoans and Fijians. We are the biggest city of Polynesia. There is also a lot of Maori who add to the mix and we have an increasing Asian and Indian population.

i like that it's a family city, not too big, and not too small, that it's quiet, low crime rate, close to yosemite, yet close to a larger city too. only a few hours away from san fran, the ocean, lake tahoe, etc....for me it's pretty near perfect.

Hah, the problem with some of her French movies is that they aren't playing anywhere in the states to begin with. mad But if they did get even a limited U.S. release, they would be in NYC.

It's a big city, but it has a laid back atmosphere. It has the atmosphere of culture with loads of old beautiful buildings, but also enough nature. And in the last years it has turned into a more modern city too.

With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

I've always wanted to go on a road trip to New Zealand and Australia. I've always assumed a huge similarity. I'm thnking now though, that "huge similarity" isn't the case.

btw: does the water really spin the other way down the drain? I really wanna see that with my own 2 eyes.

OMG I juuust read about that and thought, " Doesn't Ottensen live near there, I wonder what she thinks..."

lol

The tall tower in the background is actually the Rathaus (City Hall for my English speaking peeps), and they're currently having a wine festival from Stuttgart on it's premises. Can you imagine after a couple glasses of vino-coming around the corner and seeing that thing in the distance. I was at the festival the 2nd night this thing was there, and I had had a 2 glasses of red Trollinger- considering how strong the wine was- this thing was just layers of wrong lol

Oh yeah, it gets more vigorous as you get further south. The sun also rises in the north not the south. That photo was taken at 4.30pm on Match the 7th (But its clearly the end of summer there rather than the end of winter)

I like that I can watch the sun rise over the sea, then I can drive five hours over the moutains and watch it set over the sea on the other side of the country.

Where I live in Auckland, you don't need to drive over any mountains at all. Manukau Harbour (West Coast) and Waitemata Harbour (East Coast) are merely 20 minutes apart in most places. And Portage Road in the suburb of Otahuhu is merely 1km long between coasts (It was an ancient Maori trade route to eliminate the 1000km round trip around Cape Reinga
