this is both and
it's too bad that Hollywood can't see which films NEED 3D (Avatar, Transformers) and which doesn't (Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc)
one critic said that 3D is best suited for sci-fi films and I agree...

I actually really hate 3D movies, so this is fine with me. Big effects are making filmmakers lazier and less creative these days anyhow If you will, so will I

Four of the past five 3D blockbusters—“Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Kung Fu Panda 2”, “Green Lantern” and “Harry Potter”—made more money from 2D screens on their opening weekend than from 3D ones.
And there it is. Stuff like this really pisses me off. The real reason3D is taking a downturn is two-fold: 1) Because people are watching their money and will settle for the 2D version as it's cheaper and they've been disapointed so many times before. (see below) 2) (and this is the MAIN reason) because Hollywood continue to persist in churning out movies that are converted in Post to 3D. 90% of the crap people are being fed the past couple of years has been this conversion shit, and it's giving all the good stuff a bad name (Avatar, U23D, Cave of Forgotten Dreams etc).
The only thing I can tell you guys is knowledge is power - educate yourselves before you get to the cinema and find out if the movie was filmed in 3D using 3D cameras. If it's been a conversion you can almost guarantee it'll be a hatchet job. If you insist on going to see this crap and believe everything the marketing tells you, you've nobody to blame but yourself.
As someone who worked as a Film Technician using 11 Real D digital projectors every day, I'd like to think I'd know a thing or two.

Because the 3D sucks
the 3D in the commericals and some previews look way better than the actual movie.
i want the the 3D to pop out

This doesn't surprise me at all. I always knew 3D wasn't going to become a mainstream thing. It's novelty-type stuff. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

I'm going to have to disagree with y'all somewhat. I don't think its going a way at all, I think its going to become a constant option. It will be up to us to decide what films we choose to support in that format.
Xibalba, the only 3D presentations I've seen were IMAX. To my understanding that is NOT Real D, or Digital 3D. So, is there a huge difference in the way they look? I feel like I should make an attempt to see something in Real D, but if I'm going to pay more I'd rather it be for IMAX.

I have it at home and at best i can watch two movies a month. Watching a Lakers game in 3d was cool on ESPN. It actually felt like you were in the stands looking down on the game. This one's for the rich, not all of 'em, just the greedy
The ones that don't know how to give
