This was kinda fucked up, Vogue (Italia or not)! http://www.huffingtonpost...32834.html
'Slave Earrings' On Vogue Italia: Offensive Or Innocent?
Reading international fashion magazines can be tough because of the language barrier. Words appear out of place, phrases get lost in translation, meaning gets misconstrued.
But Jezebel has confirmed that Vogue Italia's "slave earrings" is not, as we had hoped, a mistranslation.
The Italian magazine currently features "Slave Earrings," by which they seem to mean hoop earrings, in its "Shop The Trend" section, instructing readers that hoop earrings are an updated classic... from the era of US slavery:
Jewellery has always flirted with circular shapes, especially for use in making earrings. The most classic models are the slave and creole styles in gold hoops.
On the one hand, should the enslavement of Africans in the United States be mined for style inspiration? That just feels wrong.
But on the other hand, it is true that there are several cultural references that originated in that era, from music styles to folk art traditions. So is it completely wrong to cite a jewelry trend from the historical moment as well?
The point, it seems, is that Vogue Italia flippantly references the slave trade as an inspiring moment for "decorative traditions," glamorizing slavery with an ignorant touch it seem...ct so well.
Head to Vogue.it to see t...earrings."
UPDATE: In light of all the poor press, it looks like Vogue Italia has changed the name of the feature from "Slave Earrings" to "Ethnic Earrings" (see the new headline here). Strange, however, that the magazine chose the bland, imprecise descriptor "ethnic." If they meant African American, couldn't they have just said that? | |

Shaq asking a Newsweek reporter for fuckin' hookups, flirts with her as well, and says that Lauren London was Dwayne Wade's girl, all back in November 2008. There is SO much shady shit with these players that still hasn't surfaced yet that it just boggles the mind!!!!! I only expect more to come out with his old IT guy trying to sue ol' Big AARP. And can you believe Mr. Rocks in the Mouth had the nerve to say someone wasn't "that fine"? The nerve!

Shaquille O'Neal + Allison Samuels: Basketball Big Flirts With Newsweek Reporter and Discusses Dwyane Wade's Mistresses
In an ongoing, bizarre local lawsuit, Shaquille O'Neal is accused of trying to orchestrate a frame job using child porn and the help of Miami Beach Police. Recently a judge temporarily barred the admission of a cache of the superstar's emails into the public record.
We've gotten our grubby hands on them anyway. Some are pretty interesting. We'll be sharing them here.
Let's start with some light reading. Here is respected Newsweek senior staff writer Allison Samuels trying to set Shaq up with some ladies.
In 2007, Shaq filed for divorce from his wife Shaunie. Late the next year, they officially reconciled. He was playing for the Phoenix Suns at the time. A year later, they would divorce for good.
Dwyane Wade was also still married to Siohvaughn, who would file for divorce a couple...nths later and allege infidelity on his part.
The possibility of superstar basketball players cheating on their wives isn't exactly shocking. We're more surprised by Allison Samuels, who met Shaq while covering the Los Angeles Lakers and who "helped" write his mother's autobiography. Something about the following conversation -- in which she tries to hook Shaq up with model Sessilee Lopez and then a bunch of other girls -- doesn't exactly scream Newsweek. And she's using her work email? Good Lord, what of the sanctity of the national weekly?
Shaq's lawyers have called the suit "baseless" and maintain that these emails were technically stolen by his former IT guy, Shawn Darling, who filed the suit.
We tried several times to contact Samuels for comment. At one point she emailed, "Give me 10 mins." But we didn't hear from her again.
