Man jumps on a shark...

WHY?!!! People piss me off sometimes. Leave the damn sharks alone!

Link to video ....

http://www1.whdh.com/news...-the-cape/

CHATHAM, Mass. -- The camera was rolling when a boater took a daring dive off the Cape and came in contact with a giant shark.

The fisherman wanted to reach out and touch the Basking Shark. His initial attempts failed so he decided to take things further.

“It was the biggest thing I’ve ever seen in the ocean too and it was scary, but very exciting,” said Erik Jacobs.

Jacobs was fishing off the coast of Chatham when he saw the Basking Shark -- which doesn’t typically attack people. He had no intention of trying to catch the shark, instead he wanted to swim with it and his friend caught it all on tape.

“I grabbed the back fin and swam with it for a second and then I realized where I was and then you actually see how fast I swim back to the boat -- that was no joke,” said Jacobs.

“Basking Sharks are the second largest fish in the ocean,” said Tony Lacasse of the New England Aquarium. “They’re literally a whale caught in a shark’s body. They can get up to be about 30-feet long and they’re really harmless.”

Experts said even though Jacobs wasn’t in danger of getting bit, what he did is not recommended, especially because a Basking Shark can weigh 6,000 to 10,000 pounds.

“If that shark had breached and fell on him or had just moved dramatically, the outcome for him probably wouldn’t have been good,” said Lacasse.

Jacobs, who has been fishing since the age of three, said he’s come face-to-face with 600 pound tuna and a 200-pound mako shark, but nothing compares to this experience.

“I dream shark and tuna, basically,” said Jacobs. “So I had to feel him. I had to be a part of it.”

Jacobs said he can understand why people might think he’s a little crazy for jumping in the ocean to touch a shark, but he said he would do it again.

Wildlife officials hope that he does not do this again because Basking Sharks are a protected species. What Jacobs did is not against the law.

I think the journalists of that video are, by far, more annoying, with those fake voices, and why did they use a pic of a great white? Manipulation much? bait much? The media has gone too far here, they have sold the story as if the guy had tried to rape a tiger shark or something...

what this guy did was reckless, but he only "molested" the animal for a couple of seconds. At least he didn't hunt him rolleyes, like that poor Macko confused

Because cows are domesticated animals, bred for consumption and not wild animals that belong were they belong and should be left alone. Sharks keep balance... domestic cows do not. If wolves eat/hunt them, people kill wolves.... another wild animal.

Man has helped the cow along for his own needs, domestic cows are different from their wild cousins... and they serve an important need for man. Cows are big business. $$$ This is why they are overbred.

This is 100% true. But unfortunately what it comes down to in the end is that SOME sharks WILL attack human beings if we enter into their habitat. The only way to ever insure that there is never another shark attack would be for no one to ever get in the ocean again. Since we know that isn't going to happen, even if the attacks are largely unintentional (which is to say, sharks aren't targeting us, we just look like food), they're still going to happen.

Saw a news report earlier this week that claimed that humans kill 240,000 sharks every day.

Kinda gave me pause (I said "no way").......so I checked for myself & that appears to be a fairly accurate (perhaps even conservative) number. neutral

We kill hundreds of thousands of pretty much everything every day. There is nearly seven billion of us now (if not more) and most of us eat some kind of meat. If we don't kill them that way we do it while trying to kill something else (sharks are killed both ways). If we don't kill them purposefully or accidentally while harvesting them for food we we do it by expanding into, or just straight destroying, their natural habitats. And then of course there is all the deaths caused by our poisoning their environments with an endless amount of foreign substances. We rock! (dripping with sarcasm lol )

Yeah..not a classy lot, humans (esp when you consider the scope you mention). The shark thing struck me mainly because the majority of the kills (supposedly) are for their fins only. That seemed especially vile.

Its true. Hawaii outlawed shark's fin soup and the possession of shark's fins. Federal law (and state laws, here and in some others) prohibit the "finning" of sharks in California, but we're pushing the same law has Hawaii has. Some countries have spoken out against the process and are pushing to regulate it as well. But nothing has really made a difference, especially in countries where its long been considered a delicacy. In those places there are people willing to overpay for the soup so its just pushed the whole thing underground. Its one of those things where they will never be able to stop and search every boat, so they will never be able to completely end it.

Edit: Holy what the heck I shoulda proofread that sucker.

I used to eat shark steaks often when I was in my 20's. Its really good when cooked with ginger and orange. The meat is light and tender. Good stuff.... until you realize that they are being hunted and slaughtered before they can breed and grow.

It turns my stomache now to see shark steaks still being sold were I live, I will not buy/eat it any more. Actually I do not buy swordfish either... it tastes similar to shark. Its oily like the shark meat.

I am glad people here in America really never caught on to liking shark meat. Its a good thing ofr the sharks.

What a moron. Too bad the shark didn't bat him off with a flick of his tail and bust him up.

They have an annual shark fishing tournament here in Freeport. I took the kids once, and NEVER AGAIN. It's disgusting.
