What's your Favorite fiction/fantasy/Sci-Fi storylines?

Seems like we are blessed on the org with plenty of fiction/fantasy/sci-fi fans.

I take that to include all types of popular stories such as;

  • Star Wars
  • True Blood
  • Lord of the Rings
  • Harry Potter
  • Star Trek
  • Marvel (Spiderman/Hulk/Captain America/et.al.)

What are your favorite stories that you would recommend for others to get into?

Me first:

#1 - DUNE

Anyone who is even remotely interested in Sci-Fi should read at LEAST the original book. If you get hooked, then look up the chronology and read the prequels (Butlerian Jihad, the Machine Crusades, etc.) and then continue with the Dune books as written by the original author (why does his name escape me?).

#2 - The Dresden Files

If you like True Blood, you should like this. Harry Dresden is a Wizard-for-Hire and comes across all sorts of mysteries and battles vampires, warlocks, fairies, and all sorts of bad guys.

thumbs up!

I started reading these! I liked the first 2 books a lot, but I can't remember why I didn't continue with them.

The short-lived tv version was kind of blah

If you will, so will I

The TV show was awful!

The books get better as they go along.

I love narratives that have to do with created beings struggling with their identity in relation to their creator; stuff like The Golem, Frankenstein, Pinnochio, AI, Blade Runner, the Velveteen Rabbit, most android or self-aware computer stories, etc.

I like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. I fell in love with my fiance a little bit more when he told me of the time he drove onto his college campus with his windows down, blasting a Lord of the Rings audio book and everyone was like hmm redface

if it's sci-fi I'm less concerned with story as long as there are space-ships and robots and awesome looking styling.

love I love innovative costume, interior design, music (music from the future! lol )

I love futurist Syd Meade's paintings

The Terminator. Yes, it's science fiction, although it has action sequences, and was actually inspired by stories by Harlan Ellison.

Anyone read the 'The Sword of Truth' series by Terry Goodkind?

Very good books but by the end of the saga, I was ready for it to end.

Very good imagery though.

There is a crappy tv series based on the books but I can't name it right now.

I like themes that tackle life's big questions like 'Why are we here' or 'Are we alone in the universe'. I write short stories sometimes and I find myself coming back to those themes often. Probably the best miniseries I've ever seen, a Sci Fi Channel original called The Lost Room, did a great job at being entertaining and making you think at the same time. Did anyone else see it?

A lot of sci-fi themes are as simple as good vs. evil but I like it when there's some kind of moral dilemma; when what's right and what's wrong isn't so clear. For instance, there's a foreign film from the 60's called Incubus that exemplifies what I'm talking about perfectly. It stars William Shatner (yes, Captain Kirk himself) as a "pure soul" who is the target of a beautiful succubus who has vowed to seduce him into darkeness, yet ends up falling in love herself. If that ain't conflict, I don't know what is!

Other than that, I love irony and I like to see normal people put in extraordinary circumstances. Shows like The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Tales from the Crypt...all use this premise.

yeahthat

Frank Herbert.

If only Peter Jackson loved Dune like he loved Lord of the Rings..

Anyhoo...

Loved the Star Wars movies...all six...but I accept them for what they are and didnt expect the second coming with the prequels.

Loved Lord of the Rings...the films more than the books. I know they are considered to be the "Fantasy Bible" and I dug them but to me, Tolkien spent too much time describing the bushes and trees and shit.

Dune...I cannot tell you how many times I've read those books. All six of Frank's and all six prequels his son collaborated on...COUNTLESS TIMES. Havent read the last two or three...Im afraid for the story to end.

But my favorite sci-fi "storyline" was Gaius Baltar and Six (the one in his head) from the updated Battlestar Galactica. That was pure genius.

The movie is intriguing -- I've seen it a bunch of times -- but I've honestly never been able to view it in one sitting. Something about the pace just always lulls me to sleep.

love the dune series, although his son's prequels seemed kind of rushed. or, more likely, he's just not as good a writer.

i try to read lord of the rings every couple of years or so. i've probably read it about 9 times since 6th grade.

asimov's foundation series, classic.

any heinlein...especially stranger in a strange land, the moon is a harsh mistress. most of his stuff is excellent; and usually set in the same universe, so there is a connectedness to it all.

frederick pohl's heechee saga is great, especially gateway.

edgar rice burroughs' tarzan and john carter novels are awesome.

i used to be a dc comics geek, but gave it all up a couple of years ago. but i would recommend the green lantern, starting in the early 90s. one hell of an epic story they put together for hal jordan through about the blackest night storyline.

i would seriously recommend jeff smith's bone, especially if you enjoy the lord of the rings. and his current project rasl, which has a more sci-fi angle.

also, terry moore's echo was excellent.

i'm about to pick up the box-set of martin's game of thrones novels. i've heard alot of praise for those.

Funny thing...a while back I picked up THIS book off the clearance rack at B.Dalton Bookstore specifically because the cover looked interesting and it was dirt cheap.

It was very interesting. nod

Then when HBO premiered Game of Thrones and credited George R.R. Martin I kept thinking in my head..."where do I know that name from?" doh!

I'm thinking that once I'm done with my Dune books (currently reading the Butlerian Jihad and have the Machine Crusade next) and Star Wars (can't bring myself to finish up the "Jason goes to the Dark Side" storyline but I have to!)...I might get into Game of Thrones. Well...AFTER the next Dresden book of course.
