WOW! Gee-wiz, every time I read my accounting of that concert, I think "...if I had known those words would take-off like that, I would have taken the time to have written it better", lol. Ya know, it may have been my story, but it was YOUR thread (How Did You Become A Fan Of Prince?), and it was the way you asked the question then carefully followed up that prompted me to even share it.

The topic of the whole "Rick James/Prince" debate came up again here most recently in June: The Rick James Fire It Up Tour. In fact, as I just did a quick search; I see this topic has come up quite a few times on The Org over the years, and it seems my account was often referenced. touched

I'd like to be able to say that at the time I had no idea I was witnessing history being made, but when I think back... I realize... no, it was pretty evident that what I was seeing on stage that night was a once in a lifetime experience. I'm so grateful that I was present and "in the moment". I got to see Prince in his rawest form, before I (or much of anyone else for that matter) had any idea of what to expect. Sometimes when I watch Prince perform these days, I think back and compare him to the Prince I saw back in the Spring of 1979 opening for Rick James, and often feel like they're two different people. While it's evident he's really developed his craft to become the powerhouse he is today, he was quite a different creature back in the day, lol. Then I have to do a little reality check: "Was that all just a dream?". No, that was just a young Prince, fresh out the box, doing his thing, lol. And yeah, I was there!

thumbs up!

Cool. I also found other discussions where the original thread came up.

Awesome that this story made the rounds on the forums and was adopted by an online music college site as a lesson in stage presence and the like. Only because I asked a question and your extended reply became referenced did I become connected to this, I was just along for the ride. =)

It was just cool for me to read your response as everyone else.

I'm very proud of my otherwise rather insignificant achievement, lol. Moreover, I'm honored to have been able to share something with so many that were interested in hearing about it. Like I made a little mark, lol. touched

I've nevr had an oppritunity like that. To see a monumental talent in the raw. Balls to the wall talent, un-molded by "the industry" at the time.

great account to...a "fresh-out-da-ho," umbilical-cord-still-attached fans attention to detail...not a critic's

You make a good point. One of the things that always bothered me about the long standing Rick James/Prince debate is how most everyone takes one side or the other. I never had a dog in the fight, and have always loved Prince and James equally. To me, they're like apples & oranges. That's why I enjoyed sharing my story, to lay it on the line, as it was, with no particular bias.
