Genesis I do not need birth control. But I do need a solution to my very heavy periods. My ferretin level was 9. I am losing so much blood I'm like the walking dead. I have been on iron supplements for 50 days and got the level up to 52, which is great and after 120 days I expect to feel much better. however, iron supplements are really a long term solution - they make me feel sort of sick all the time. I'm not a vegetarian or anything.

Mirena is an IUD. So when you asked about it, I inferred that you needed birth control.

Are you through having kids? NovaSure might be more what you're looking for...

http://www.novasure.com/info/utilities/request-brochure.cfm?src=hvy

I know that. My husband had a vasectomy a few years ago. We are very much done with kids :dead:

I want to hear from anyone who has the Mirena. Simply because that's what I'm booked in to have fitted and at the moment I have pretty much decided against getting it put in since the possible side effects, no matter how rare or unusual are NOT something I'd be able to cope with.

My sister in law was having the same problems so she talked to her doc and they cauterized the lining of her uterus... she swears by it, says her periods are very light now.. I was actually thinking about doing this cuz as im "maturing" mine are getting terrible! Its called Endometrial Ablation....

My gynae explained this to me also and showed me the instrument they use to do it. According to her they sometimes can't scrape off all of it, especially at the top of th uterus. She had some reason why she didn't think it was a good idea.

That sounds like a D&C, not cauterization confuse

Id rather have anesthetic than sedative!!!
They booked me in to get a hysteroscope curette same time as Mirena inserted all under general anesthetic.

Ummmm...no. I said it was endometrial ablation - which you posted all kinds of info on. confuse

I guess i didnt understand why its called something different?

Because NovaSure is a proprietary process. Endometrial ablation is the generic term.

The mesh triangle at the end retracts into the tube. They don't try to stick the full width through the cervix.

I have used an IUD for 18 years, and I'm very happy with that! Never got pregnant and didn't have any 'outside' hormones in my body.

The last time I did have more pain the first two months, it felt a little like cramps. The IUD's before that not. I have allways been very happy with them, because I'm too chaotic for the birthcontrol pill, I would forget that too often.

I have my natural period, wich is only 2 days every 4,5 weeks; I'm not a bleeder biggrin

In the Netherlands it's more common to use the IUD, and I never heard complaints from my friends.

One friend has the Mirena and is very satisfied with it. She doesn't have her periods anymore and doesn't experience any pain.

So, I don't have anything but my personal positive experience and those of friends!

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

i have the mirena fitted. i have just had a new one inserted after five years.

i have had no problems at all with mirena. i use it for birth control but i have had heavy periods.

with mirena i only have tiny bleed one or two days a month. the initial fitting was fine, just like having a smear test. the replacemnet was a bit more difficult, but it's in now and i'm done for another five years.

personally i have had no problems with it and i would recommend it.

Ain't sterilisation operations safer than having a T shaped thingy in your uterus?

Is there any place of refuge one can flee from this insanity

My friends didn't have any of that. Any of those (temporary) side effects differ from person to person. I don't know what the statistics are on these reported side effects and if they prolong. However, why don't you try for 6 months and then evaluate?

I don't have 6 months to waste. I've tried Implanon and different oral hormonal contraception before and felt unwell and miserable. I feel quite happy about myself at the moment and my sex drive is awesome! I don't really want to risk it all, even for 6 months. I've read doctors are hesitant to take it out just because you don't want it any more, especially if you have symptoms they don't believe have anything to do with the IUD. Not to mention that I don't have $2k lying around to get a hysteroscopy and put the thing in sad

That is one of MANY potential problems Dave, it's also one doctors feel is "minor". As someone who is already struggling with weight and self image, and boobs that I DO NOT WANT TO BE ANY LARGER dead I am very reluctant to try it. Hormones hang in a fine balance!
