How did our comic book thread not take off!? Rasl has been too slow for me, but I have a few issues in the "to read" pile, so maybe it will pick up about. But I've been loving Echo! I'm sad its about to end. I actually went back and read Strangers In Paradise again, too (for about the 20th time). Terry is just a great writer/creator.

How in the crap did I not know that they were doing a big ass Bone 20th box set! I must have one, like, now! Especially if its color, because I haven't bought any of those yet. Cerebus is excited now!

I know, right? I had high hopes for that thread.

Here's a better picture of Terry's booth. He's a nice guy. I'd fallen behind on Echo, so I was beyond thrilled to get that complete edition. I'm planning to just hunker down one weekend and read the whole thing. Rachel Rising is his new series.

Also, I went to the party for the 20th anniversary of Bone and Jeff Smith signed a copy of the book they were giving out there:

He was fun to talk to. Great guy. I have a few of the color versions, but I think I prefer the black and white, so I'm not sure if I'll buy the 20th anniversary edition or not. I do have to say, though, that I think Scholastic did an incredible job with the coloring of their versions. They are really, really good.

OK, well, shit. If Echo is already collected into an omnibus version that I'm behind on that, too. I thought there was still a couple monthly issues to go. lol Excited for the new series, though. nod

I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I have every individual Bone issue (and a couple specials), most of the original graphic novel releases (plus the first two colored books) and the B&W omnibus. I LOVE the omnibus version, so I should probably just donate the graphic novels to our local shelter/second hand store.

I feel you on the B&W, because that's my thing. A majority of my comic book collection is independent B&W stuff. When its good, or great, I do love it. But for me, as great as Jeff's characters are, his backgrounds could sometimes be lacking. A bit too minimal for me - too much unused white space. So I think I may prefer the colored versions on this one. I don't know - hard to say, I guess. But I DEFINITELY love all the big, hard cover, slip case, Absolute type editions creators and comic companies have been releasing in the last few years. They look GREAT all lined up on a book shelf. lol

Oh, and if somebody breaks into your house someday and you find that signed Quest For The Spark book missing.... don't look at me. whistling lol

it's hot now, I get it. But you know, I got made fun of as a kid for reading comics. Now those same douchebags are in line talking about how Captain America is cool and bad ass.

fuck off!!!! lol

I generally get sketches of Spider-Man from any and all artists I dig. I have a nice head sketch of spidey from John Romita Sr. that I treasure. fallinluv

Yep. I didn't know what comics conventions were till I was an adult. As a kid, I got made fun of too--often by my own mother lol--for reading them. The coolest thing I found as a kid was a monthly flea market where a couple different guys would sell back issues. I managed to get tons of old X-Men and Legion comics that I wanted, and sometimes just random old stuff that looked interesting to me.

I have to do a lot of work-type stuff here, so most of my day is planned, but just sneaking out to buy a bunch of old comics yesterday was the highlight of my trip.

And regarding the people who now talk about how badass Captain America is: They piss me the fuck off. They come in and they hire a bunch of Hooters wannabe girls to fake flirt with the guys, and then they go screw up things like Green Lantern because they don't understand anything about why people like the character. Then when it doesn't do well, they want to ditch the whole thing.

My first convention might have been 1982--definitely no later than that. I walked in with $18 in my pocket and got a decent stack of books. Those were good times.

You are very angry today.

The Aeon Flux lady was tossed because her constume was too skimpy.

Adrianne Curry kicked out of Comic-Con for wearing revealing Aeon Flux costume

By Joe Gracely
Daily News Writer

Monday, July 25th 2011, 2:50 PM

No pants, no entry.

"America's Next Top Model" winner and lover of geekdom Adrianne Curry made an early exit from Comic-Con on Saturday after she was told to leave for showing up in a skimpy outfit that showed a little too much skin.

"Just got stopped by a ton of cops," the model, 28, tweeted. "My costume is illegal...the butt...sigh."

Curry's risqué costume - she came dressed as '90s cartoon vixen Aeon Flux - apparently didn't cover quite enough of her backside with its form-fitting black synthetic top and thigh-high boots.

The model was photographed leaving the premises with a red shirt tied around her waist.

But Curry, a self-proclaimed "Mistress of the Dorks," wasn't down for the count. She returned to the fan-fest later in the day dressed in a provocative "Star Wars" imperial officer outfit which, though more conservative than her earlier choice, still turned heads.

It was a natural costume change for Curry, who has been public with her love for "Star Wars" and donned a similar outfit at 2009's Trooper Fest before slipping into the classic Princess Leia gold bikini for a photo shoot at last year's Comic-Con.

By the way, these are great photos, Efan!

And I've also heard the complaints about the convention not being about comics anymore. I get the email updates from Mile High Comics president, Chuck Rozanski and he said the convention this year has been particularly frustrating. sad

I heard the same from a couple friends. But then we have Efan here posting pics of two booths from two of my all-time favorites. And I watched a couple hours of G4 coverage on two seperate days over the weekend, both of which included a good amount of comic book stuff. So the comic books are there, but they're clearly getting overshadowed by the pop-culture movie and tv stuff.

I read that ticket prices for next year have increased significantly because Comic-Con wants to generate more money to possibly move out of San Diego if necessary because it feels it's outgrowing the current space.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about the con, to be honest. The comics are definitely there and supported. Some publishers I talked to were irritated about the Hollywood-ization of the con, but it's still the biggest con for them in terms of sales.

I have a ton more to say, but my flight is about to board, so I've got to go. I will post more thoughts on this later. biggrin

Efan, can you get shots of the Walking Dead booth!?!? Heck, for that matter, go to the Walking Dead panel session and take LOTS of shots of Andrew Lincoln!!! nod

I would love to get to that panel today, but I'm not too hopeful about getting in, and I have zero patience for the lines this place can generate. That panel's at 11:15, so I think I'd have to be over there in line for it right now. But apparently there will be some signings going on at the Walking Dead booth after the panel, so I'll give it a shot.

By the way, did you know Robert Kirkman was gay? I had no idea. He's on the Gays in Comics panel this year.

I didn't know Kirkman is gay. I've only recently learned much of anything about him, though. I've now seen clips of him at the Walking Dead panel. He seems a nice guy.

'WALKING DEAD' SHOCKER: Frank Darabont Steps Down As Showrunner

By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: This is a quite a bombshell -- I hear that Frank Darabont, the creator, executive producer and director of AMC's smash hit The Walking Dead, is stepping down as showrunner of the series, which is now in production on its upcoming second season. The news is even more surprising given the fact that Darabont was on hand for Walking Dead's Comic-Con panel just this past Friday alongside fellow executive producers Robert Kirkman, on whose graphic novel the series is based, and Gale Anne Hurd and appeared excited about Season 2. There is speculation that Darabont might be off the show completely, but I hear talks are still ongoing about him possibly staying on in some capacity. Darabont, who spent five years trying to get a TV version of the zombie saga off the ground and wrote and directed the AMC pilot, hails from the feature world, and I hear that he never quite adjusted to the daily grind of producing a TV series. Last December, he considered forgoing a writing staff for Season 2 and assigning scripts to freelancers but ultimately went for the traditional writing staff model recommended by the network and tapped Glen Mazzara as an executive producer and his No. 2. It is unclear if The Shield alum Mazzara, who has showrunning experience, would now step in to run Walking Dead. I hear that the behind-the-scenes turmoil has not affected production on the show, which continues as scheduled. Season 2 of Walking Dead is slated to premiere Oct. 16.In addition to huge ratings, the series has garnered awards recognition for its freshman season, including a best drama series Golden Globe nomination as well as DGA and WGA noms. In a Deadline Emmy Q&A last month, Darabont raved about his transition to television. "In TV, you have to get ideas across in a more economical way," he said. "But the process is fundamentally the same (as features), just accelerated. There’s no time for second guessing. The wheels are in constant motion. I love that about television. If I’d known how much fun it was, I’d have done it years ago."

I didn't see this coming, but I can't say it's altogether out of the blue given some of the things I've heard about Darabont. Not only is serial TV a domain still relatively foreign to him, but he is supposed to be hell to work with. I bet he and AMC have been constantly at each other's throats, and the writing debacle can't have helped matters.

But assuming Darabont's replacement (and/or contractual obligations of cast and crew) can keep existing talent happy such that we don't see a mass exodus, I don't see his departure hurting much. The show certainly is selling itself now; it's already got a ready audience; and, honestly, with just 6 episodes having aired, I don't think there's been enough material yet to truly calibrate quality such that we would notice a real decline or improvement from Season 1 to 2, regardless of who leads production. I almost think of the truncated Season 1 as little more than a longform prologue for Season 2, which will earnestly introduce us to the full world of the show and the quality of its storytelling. We'll see.
