Baseball Caps

Inspired by RodeoSchro dork in a baseball cap thread

I fucking hate baseball caps, when did it become socially acceptable for men (grown men, not playing baseball) to wear this headgear?

I particularly hate the over handled peak, the one that has been mauled into a rediculous shape that only serves to make the wearer look like a duck!

Quack duck

Worse, when the guy wears one it seems to be surgically attached to his head, he never takes it off when entering a building, church or when he sits to eat. Just plain bad manners, and takes offense if you ask him to remove it.

Does it serve as a mark of a douchebag, dork (in American parlance) or just a plain disrespectful dickhead (in my mother tongue)?

This just confuses me:

Retired older gentleman American tourist in a baseball cap and "sneakers", I am sorry pops but when was the last time you either ran or played baseball, act your age and get some self respect!

Sorry there is so much hate, but I need support, I need to know I am not alone boxed Are there any Americans who are tired of this practice, or is it just my stiff arsed brit attitude intollerant of change?

Oh, and now thery are being introduced into school uniforms, arrg!! Little girls in the school playground in fucking baseball caps!! disbelief

Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

I dont see the big deal... shrug I wear one everyday when I run to keep the sun off my face and to stop the sweat from pouring in my eyes...

I guess Ive always seen guys wear them, usually in a casual setting if they are spending time outside...

Its no different from any other "fashion accessory" be it a tie, scarf, necklace, etc... its just a laid back look...

And IMO the idea of having to take it off when inside is kind of old fashioned biggrin

My father always wore one when he would be doing anything outside - fishing, hiking, playing softball, etc. It was used for a practical purpose - to keep the sun out of his eyes. Nowadays he'll opt to hang in the shade or wear sunglasses.

My brother's the kind of guy who wears it all the freaking time.

I do not find them attractive.

dude, it's just a hat. rolleyes

the sun shines a lot over here. hah!

you curve it so the hat itself fits your head correctly. I agree curving it too much looks ridiculous, but the opposite is even worse looking:

I wear a baseball hat all the time. Sometimes it's cause my hair is jacked. Other times, it's because the Yankees are playing. Sometimes, it matches my outfit. A lot of times it's to keep the relentless sun off my face.

I'll take it off when I feel it is respectful to do so, but that's not often. Just because I walked inside? nah. We're a lot more laid back society than GB. I'll be sure to take it off when I have afternoon tea and biscuits though. wink

I'll make you a deal. You accept our baseball hats and we'll accept your futbol jerseys. smile

You know, you’re an exception, jersey. I generally don’t like them, but they seem to fit you and your aesthetic well.

I suppose you always look good, though.

yeahthat

I ususally wear one because;

A) my hair looks like sh*t

B) it's sunny out

C) it's raining out

I've actually stopped wearing them so much lately b/c I was told it's only making my thinning hair WORSE!

You know, I've got to defend the sneakers too - especially on a tourist. He's probably doing WAY more walking than he does at home - especially if he's not from one of our bigger cities. Should he walk into a facny restaurant at night in sneakers and a baseball hat? No. But if out and about during the day or stopping off at a more casual place he shouldn't have to go change before and I can't imagine wearing any other shoes for being on my feet all day. And I'm not retired yet.

I don't much notice them anymore unless they've been overly broken down or, yes, are worn at innapropriate times (in churches, with formalwear, etc.).

I own one, but I haven't worn it in years. I just think my lazy, bookish butt looks stupid trying to pull off a sporty look.

I defend sneakers, too, even though I think they can look really dumb. They're arguably the healthiest shoes out there. It'd be nice if there were a wider variety of casual to formal styles with athletic-like support.

LOL i just stated waring them again a a few years ago (since I got out of the army), they keep the sun out of my eyes. they help prevent cancer. they help me see better. I often take it off inside but not always. I tend to get them for free! (the only one of the 7 or so I have was free to me. One was a gift someone bought me with my own money...weird)
