Canada Getting Plastic Money

The Bank of Canada have unveiled its new $50 and $100 bills - the first releases in a new series of plastic bank notes.

The $100 bill will come out first, in November 2011. The front of the bill features former prime minister Sir Robert Borden, with a scenes depicting the discovery of insulin on the back.

The $50 bill features former prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King on the front and images of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Amundsen, an arctic research vessel, on the back. It will be released in spring 2012.

The remaining bills will come before the end of 2012.

The new bills are made of a new plastic polymer that are harder to fake, recyclable and two to three times more resistant to tearing, the Bank of Canada said.

I'm so behind. I knew there was discussion around this. I didn't know it was already being implemented. Interesting.

I saw an UNBELIEVABLE amount of cash on Saturday night - the takings at a pool hall in a country town eyepop bags full

They already use plastic notes in Australia, basically you can take them in water and they don't get damaged or rip so easily.

Somewhat...I don't use cash very often. I prefer plastic, though in this case that could get a little confusing. lol

I think most Canadians pay via Interac (debit). I know I do and never have cash on me.

I've never seen these plastic notes melt hmmm but I can attest they can get REALLY sticky

I took cash in to bank yesterday, and the counting machine got the total wrong about 5 times because the notes stuck together, so I demanded it be hand-counted. The teller said I should just have told her the money was from a bar and she would have hand-counted it from the start lol
