On a serious note, I don't think these attitudes will ever change. I knew a hair stylist in the states who was scared to cut feminine men's hair because she didn't want to accidentally get HIV if she were to nick them.

Makes me wonder exactly what sorts of red flags drove the refusal. If there were "I wouldn't call myself 'gay,' but I have gotten drunk at parties and..." sorts of thing in this guy's self-reported history, I can see where the donation center is coming from. If it was just a matter of, say, a lisp and proper shoe-to-man purse coordination, that seems pretty lame.
This all brings to bear whether these pre-screening protocols are monitoring indentification with some assumed group , which always has been a stupidly arbitrary measure of donor candidacy, or individual health/risk history, which is tons more relevant.
