It's official now. Borders is closing its doors forever.
The company will begin closing its remaining stores as soon as Friday, and the liquidation is expected to run through September. The chain has 10,700 employees.

I really liked Borders.
Now I have to go find a Barnes & Nobles.

Nah...the NOOK saved their @ss!
Borders tried to pick things up with the KOBO e-reader, but failed. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! |

Driving back from New Mexico a couple weeks ago, I veered to the north when we were close to the Texas- Oklahoma border, because I wanted to see the Red River. It's the border between the two states, and I'd heard of it all my life but never seen it.
The bridge was very wide, and I expected a huge, raging, Texas-sized river. You know what I saw?
A series of puddles linked by trickles of water!
I thought this might be because of our draught but my father-in-law said it was like that most of the time.
Wrong borders for the thread, I know, but where else was I going to post this scintillating story?
over in the trickly river forum, of course |

I hated working there and hated my coworkers. I was a bit happy when I walked in the mall about 4 months after getting laid off and saw it was gone
I've always preferred Barnes and Noble and independent book stores
In the last 2 years, most of my books were purchases from Amazon. But independent book stores are better if you can find a few in your hometown. |

"Online" Borders is still going strong. I get emails from them every day.
All I need is one more store (of any kind) emailing me...aargh; and it doesn't
go into the 'junk' mail since I've shopped at their store before. |

i agree about the workers.
i guess borders has never been an integral part of my reading life, since i've a real tendency toward cheap and borders never embraced my philosophy.
i would weep sad tears if powell's bookstore in portland, OR ever went under. powell's is a kind of heaven for me, with new and used books about everything under the sun and then some.
imo if printed books are going to compete in the digital era they should be sold at magazine prices.
I love Powell's... my ex-wife lives in Portland. I was going to move there permanently, then we got divorced. Great store, picked up some very cool things there. From what I hear, they have been having problems though.
I live in the Portland area, as well; Powell's is a little slice of heaven! Ah, the smell of books . . .
I am really sorry about Borders, though. It was a great place to spend a lunch hour; truly rejuvenating.
It's sad. |
