I remember seeing a report at the beginning of 2010 that predicted they would be gone by the end of the year, so at least they held on for few more months! lol
They had a few large stores in all the major cities here in the UK as well, and all those were closed down at least a year ago. And the one near my ex-wife's place in Portland never seemed to be particularly busy whenever I was in there.
I think Amazon and E-Readers are making big physical bookstores redundant, the same way MP3's and digital music made big physical music stores redundant. It's a shame, but such is the time we live in. |

i agree about the workers.
i guess borders has never been an integral part of my reading life, since i've a real tendency toward cheap and borders never embraced my philosophy.
i would weep sad tears if powell's bookstore in portland, OR ever went under. powell's is a kind of heaven for me, with new and used books about everything under the sun and then some.
imo if printed books are going to compete in the digital era they should be sold at magazine prices.

I love Powell's... my ex-wife lives in Portland. I was going to move there permanently, then we got divorced. Great store, picked up some very cool things there. From what I hear, they have been having problems though.

I'd go to the library, but the atmosphere isn't as appealing. Too many evil teenagers lounging around, texting and eating in the magazine area If you will, so will I

More shocked then you were by the closing of the bookstrore chain? There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

Hey! that's not fair! I'm a kid and I read more books than I can afford. I've even read old classics (on my own) like Arabian nights, red and black.. I read dostoevsky's books, I even read polish literature. And I know plenty of people my age who love to read as well

They didn't stop making records. I just bought two new records the other day. You have to know where to look.

Yeah, I purchased a book for 70% Off at one of the Border stores they were closing here in Michigan. I went home and still found the damn book cheaper on amazon.com. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

mind you i love the digital age but the e-books are so impermanent. all it takes is a solar flare, or a power outage. poof! book not there anymore

i read today that the remaining borders bookstores will be closed. that's not a good thing. hope the workers get good severance packages

i was thinking about this...with kindles and nooks, and ipads, etc...think of all the trees that will be saved because books are going digital!
borders had some good naughty books though...remember the time you and I got busy in the cookbook section after browsing through the Paula Dean cookbook?? and then you told the borders guy you screamed because you finally found a good recipe for a chocolate lave cake that gushed????

It's official now. Borders is closing its doors forever.
http://dealbook.nytimes.c...liquidate/
Calling Off Auction, Borders Plans to LiquidateBy MICHAEL J. DE LA MERCED and JULIE BOSMAN8:31 p.m. | Updated The Borders Group said Monday that it would liquidate, shutting down the 40-year-old bookseller after it failed to find a last-minute savior.
Though it is not a big surprise, the move will still strip the publishing industry of shelf space that is becoming increasingly scarce as brick-and-mortar stores continue to founder.
Borders said it would proceed with a proposal by the private equity firms Hilco and the Gordon Brothers Group to close down its 399 remaining stores. That liquidation plan will be presented on Thursday to the federal judge overseeing the company’s bankruptcy case.
The company will begin closing its remaining stores as soon as Friday, and the liquidation is expected to run through September. The chain has 10,700 employees.
Borders’ fate appeared sealed after a committee of its biggest unsecured creditors rejected the company’s plan to sell itself to the Najafi Companies for $215.1 million. The committee had argued that the bid by Najafi, which also owns the Book-of-the-Month Club, could have allowed the investment firm to liquidate Borders without the creditors benefiting.
Borders had set Sunday as a deadline to find alternatives to liquidation. But while it had held talks with Books-A-Million and other companies, it was unable to sign up another deal.
“Following the best efforts of all parties, we are saddened by this development,” Mike Edwards, Borders’ president, said in a statement. “The headwinds we have been facing for quite some time, including the rapidly changing book industry, e-reader revolution, and turbulent economy, have brought us to where we are now.”

They liquidated my local Borders about 3 months ago. It was a huge disappointment. Now the only bookstore that's left (close to where I live) is Barnes and Nobles. Hopefully that makes it through..it's got a big music section as well.

Driving back from New Mexico a couple weeks ago, I veered to the north when we were close to the Texas- Oklahoma border, because I wanted to see the Red River. It's the border between the two states, and I'd heard of it all my life but never seen it.
The bridge was very wide, and I expected a huge, raging, Texas-sized river. You know what I saw?
A series of puddles linked by trickles of water!
I thought this might be because of our draught but my father-in-law said it was like that most of the time.
Wrong borders for the thread, I know, but where else was I going to post this scintillating story?
