I will keep buying books until they stop printing them.
Then I'll read them on my laptop or desktop. Effa e-reader!

I felt the same way until recently. But really, there's no reason you can't have both, right?
After I bought the positively dreadful Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I began to change my mind. I love having certain books in paper, but a bunch of the books I read in any given year are ones I don't really need the paper experience with. But for books I do want to have and hold, the printed versions are still there to buy.
Also, when traveling, it would be so nice to have an ereader.

I've been reading e-books in various file formats on my desktop and then laptop for more than a decade. My desktop/laptop has the biggest screen and the most features, no argument. Also, I'm going to travel with my laptop. Why do I need to buy another unecessary piece of equipment? The only MINOR issue is battery life, and there's ways around that, too.
Really, I just don't believe in the marketed gadget consumerism age the world is presently living in. There's too much, too often. Too many pieces of equipment that do several of the same things, but not ALL of those things, so they can make you think you "need" something. In reality, we don't.

Totally agree with all of that (who wants to bring a laptop AND kindle on a vacation?) except I hate reading anything of length on a computer screen, and and a kindle is much easier on my eyes.
And if I am bringing a book, then why not a kindle? I probably should leave the laptop at home, in fact, and take a vavation from the computer! My Legacy

I've done that several times in the last year. I figure, if I need to check email that urgently, I can do it on my phone. It's nice to take a break now and then. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

yay for vavations (and typos)! it's tempting to bring a laptop, but really, I don't have anything that urgent going on...unless you reply to this [Edited 7/13/11 13:00pm] My Legacy

Don't have one, but I want one badly, I am so behind on books. And seeing I can still "borrow" library books. See the Nook online for $109.

usually I read used books, so I probably won't get one anytime soon
I also wonder about the page turn button. it gets hit hundreds of times per book, how long will it last? My Legacy

I was going to post, ya know, as an ACTUAL RESPONSE to your OP that my brother-in-law has a Nook. You already seemed to have moved past the idea of buying the Nook, though, so I didn't post this...
He's a little slow about such things so I set it up for him. I put a number of different file formats on it including plaint text, epub, e-reader, pdf, jpeg and MP3. The all work smoothly, no issuers what-so-ever. Also, once we got it connected to their wireless network the online functionality also worked well. I found the design of its interface a bit cumbersome - a few too many steps to get around for my liking. But once I got used to the process I stopped thinking about it pretty quickly.
I don't know about Kindle, because I've never used one, but the one bit of advice/info I would offer that I noticed about the Nook is that you DO NOT have to purchase the books through their store. You would think that would be something people would check immediately, but I guess a lot don't (which really surprised me). You can upload (drag and drop, even) any DRM free file that it recognizes with no problem. Which is to say, you can download them from wherever, or get them on discs, or in your email, from whoever, and load them right up.
You want some Star Trek books, lemme know!

Seemed pretty solidly built on the Nook. No more or less likely to wear out than clicky buttons on a laptop touchpad.
Edit: Clicky damn it. Not clikcy. P'shh.

Well, I zipped out to Best Buy and looked at the Kindle...and then went to Barnes and Noble to look at the Nook. Glad I did...cuz I think the Nook might win... We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

it seems like people who have used both prefer the nook
Maybe the kindle is more popular because people associate books and internet more with Amazon than with B&N My Legacy

I'm going to Puerto Rico this coming Sunday and staying for a week. Was thinking about taking my laptop but decided that it would be good for me not to take it; I'll just take my phone.
Only thing is, I'll miss watching my shows on hulu! I'll survive

Maybe I should explain that I still have an old flippy kinda motorola cell phone. It barely received texts before my sister gave it to me for free. My plan doesn't even include texting. My phone is for phonecalls. My computers are for all the things that computers do. I don't even own a seperate mp3 player anymore.

I have a NookColor and I love it. I've bought more books in the last three months since getting it, then I have bought physical books in the last 3 years! I simply don't have the space for physical books and I like to be able to have lots of books with me when I travel. |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Good to know! I think I'd read a lot more if it weren't so hard (and heavy) to carry books along. And when I go on vacation, I invariably need more than one book to keep me in reading material. I can blow through several novels in a week if I'm just relaxing without television.
The NookColor is out for me, though. I don't want anything with a backlit screen. I want to be able to read everywhere - including outside - and backlit screens do not work with polarized sunglasses (which is what my "reading" sunglasses have). We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You can turn down the backlight to almost nothing, and change the color to white text on black background so there's almost no light coming through... don't know if that would help!
Maybe the new NookTouch would work, though. That one's not backlit. |

Is anybody else using 3rd party software to manage their Kindle? I'm using Calibre as it will change other ebook files into Kindle-readable ones. And if you happen upon thousands of DRM-free books in a murky corner of the internet, it'll put them on too. But that would be very naughty.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The Nook Simple Touch is the one I'm most likely to get.
With the backlit ones, the light and the screen are both problematic. No matter how low you turn them down, they make polarized lenses "rainbow." I can't read a computer screen in my sunglasses - even have problems with my phone sometimes.
Plus, I don't want to drop $250 on a reader. I'd rather go whole hog and get an iPad. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Ah, I see. Don't think I've ever had polarized lenses.
I didn't realize the new Nook Touch was only $139! That's incredibly good value for money.
$250 was worth it for me for the NookColor as you can root/hack it and flash a full version of Android, with all the Google apps and Android Market, which is what I've done, making it an incredibly good value tablet (as opposed to an expensive e-reader)
When you do that, it looks like this

Hey guys, I just got a nook yesterday
It was really random & coincidental.
Anyways, it's the nook touch and I love it. I would have to say that it's better than the kindle, which I looked at, and it works beautifully! It's pretty small, but the screen is the same exact size as the kindle. It's very convenient.. The touch screen is flawless. And the thing is, this is strictly an ereader. No games, no web browser, it's just for books which is perfect. There are magazines and newspapers also. It's like reading an actual, physical book, which is perfect. I would definitely recommend it if you want something just for reading.
