Sayings That Make No Sense To You

Is there a saying that makes no sense to you whatsoever, but that some other people seem to like?

I've always thought the saying coined by Richard Bach: "If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it's yours. If not, it probably never was", was one of them.

I don't like this saying because, #1, If you really love something why would you set it free, in hopes that it comes back to you? Wouldn't you want to hold onto it and cherish it?

#2, This saying, to me, sounds like something a little kid would say. "I'll set it free, and if it comes back, I get to keep it!"

Maybe there's more to this saying than the way I'm interpreting it, but this saying is one that I never thought made any damn sense. lol

There was a girl who I used to go to high school with who loooooved this saying. She would write it on her paper book covers all the time. rolleyes lol

Edited because my original post also made no sense. lol

Who came up with that mess?! If I had some cake you damn straight I want to eat it, why wouldn't I. disbelief lol

The saying makes total sense. It is simply an acknowledgement that you can't make someone love you. shrug

But you probably already knew that

Here is one: "You can't compare apples to oranges."

I think it is supposed to mean "apples and oranges are totally different and, thus, you can't compare them."

But that makes no damn sense. The whole point of comparison is to determine how two things are alike and how they are different.

Of course I can compare an apple to an orange. Watch me.

An apple is spherical in shape. So is an orange, but more so.

An apple is usually red, but an orange is, well, orange.

Both have seeds.

Both are fruit.

See, I just compared an apple to an orange. hmph!

I guess they mean that you have to keep searching through it until you find your pearl. (whatever it is your life that's making it worthwhile) buy that's just my take on the saying. lol

'the apple of her eye' , as used to describe the way one individual holds another in high esteem. it denotes fondness, but even though i love apples i can't see one in my eye. wouldn't that hurt? is there even such a thing as an eye apple? i think not. apples come from trees. confused

I have a co-worker that occassionaly drops the line, "Dollars to Donuts." What does this mean? Funny thing is that I started using it too instead of saying "I bet you" but I have no clue the meaning of it.

It not only means "I'll bet you" but also that if I lose the bet, I'll pay you money, but if I win the bet, you pay me nothing. donuts = 00
