I'm all hella cultured an' shit... 'naw mean?

I used to do all of the above when I lived close to and worked IN the city, used to see all the films and live music back in the 90s.

Got married, moved to the burbs, had a bunch of kids, now getting a bluray DVD of a kids movie is about as much action as my cultural brain gets

I would love to say I watch lots of foreign films on SBS every night, but I don't. I kind of always end up watching Family Guy instead

My choice in husband has a lot to do with it, he's a musician, so we feel too musicked out to go hear concerts (Although back in March I took my son to see the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's John Williams retrospective) He's not exactly uncultured really, but he is kind of low-brow in most of his preferences. We once saw a very bad opera together (Australia Post presents Carmen) and at the end of it wondered if the performers were actually Australia Post employees needless to say, that experience probably killed any inclination he may have had to go see another opera even if the tickets are free another time years ago we saw a friend perform in an opera the love for three oranges which was pretty good.

I guess when the kids are bigger we might have more time to get out and do that stuff.

I travel whenever I can I get out of the country at least once each year

It would be cool to go listen to a symphony or something but I never do things like that.

I see live theatre once or twice a year or so. I enjoy it but it can be quite expensive so it’s not usually on the top of my list. I used to go a lot more when I was younger and got free tickets from friends or went to smaller productions.

I’ve been to a handful of operas over my lifetime and I enjoy them but it’s not usually a priority either. I see classical music once a year or so as well.

My bf works for the University of Minnesota so he’s aware of all kinds of stuff going on there for free or cheap. We saw a student symphony do the debut performance of some contemporary composer’s new work (it recorded for NPR and it was pretty cool). We’ve also attended public astronomy presentations and looked through the gigantic telescope and attended a lecture on some REALLY amazing research towards making solar energy feasible and affordable for the masses.

I regularly visit the art museums and our science museum.

I see live music and concerts fairly often, but that depends on who’s playing these days. I’ve gone through phases where I see a show a week (when I was younger) but sometimes now I’ll have a drought for a few months or more.

I tend to see all of the big OScar nominated movies each year too, but sometimes I don't get them all in. I love movies and have attended a handful of art festival movies type stuff too.

A couple weeks ago I attended a recording of a show for Minnesota Public Radio called WITS and it was my favorite night out in a long time. My favorite author (Neil Gaiman) was a guest, there was a musical guest as well and they had 2 call-in guests (Will Wheaton, & Adam Savage from Mythbusters) and it was all a big party. There were readings and interviews and quizzes and songs and drinks and food and it was a really fun time. I’ve been to see Prairie Home Companion tapings as well – it’s a very Minnesotan thing to do.

I sing in the shower and around the house and that’s about it. I used to play the clarinet and I taught myself to play piano, though I never really picked up using my left hand all that well. I also used to be able to pluck out a few chords on the guitar, but I can’t remember that anymore either.

Yes, not frequently, but maybe 1-2 times/year. The last thing I saw was that Green Day musical (I can't remember the title). When I lived in Chicago and worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art, I used to go 1-2 month because we would get free tickets to all sorts of shows.

I've never been to the opera. I don't mind listening to classical music on the radio but I ususally don't. I wish I knew more about it (history, compsosers, etc.)

I don't like music festivals, but I'll go to concerts or the bar around the corner that has live music occasionally. I recently saw Prince, of course. I'm going to see Steely Dan in a few months.

I played the saxophone for 6 years in jr/sr high, and also the piano for a few years. I wish I knew how to play the piano and had a good singing voice.

I go to museums all the time - I have a Master's in Modern Art History, so I stay pretty up to date with the exhibitions. I also give tours at a world-famous art museum in NYC. I have a lot of favorite artists: William Kentridge, Sarah Sze, Marcel Duchamp (the man in my avatar), Catherine Opie, to name a few.

6) How often do you travel and explore other cultures? If so, where to?

Living in NYC, you can get experience other cultures almost whenever you want. I have been trying to 'travel' at least once a year lately. Last year I went to the French West Indies and I just got back from a trip to central Italy. Not the most exotic, but fine for me!

7) Do you make your own art?

Not any more. I was required to take 5 semesters of studio art classes as an art history major during undergrad. That was the last time I drew anything. Although one could argue that the tours I create for the museum are works of "performance" art. The tours are not lecture format, but rather based on visitor interaction and responses to our open-ended questions so they are different every single time. It's a bit like art improv!

Love going into DC for their great museums. Last month PositivityNYC and I went in to meet a friend of mine and we spent a good part of the day at the Museum of American Art.

Haven't been to the theatre in a while and miss it. Would like to find a nice production to see this summer. We have Broadway quality theatre in DC area for great prices.

I've never done the "going to the bah-llet" thing, but seriously contemplating getting season passes ($300 for like 6 shows ) for Kennedy Center. They have some fierce lookin shows coming. One with costumes by Gaultier. I'm dying to do it! Having season passes to the ballet sounds so cultured and lady-like.

1. Sadly, the last thing I went to was the Color Purple w/ Fantasia.

2. Never been, but I would love to go a classical music concert. Opera, not so much.

I've lived 'overseas' about 1/3rd of my life, and have travelled extensively. My next trip is in 3 days, but isn't anything spectacular. It's a business trip to Ubon, Thailand.

While at home, I stick to mostly movies and concerts. I see on average a movie a week at the local art house theater. It's in walking distance and ticket prices are cheap ($7) so why not? I attend concerts a few times a month--usually 30-40 a year, mostly indie artists. Tonight I'm seeing Nicole Atkins and The Black Sea in Brooklyn.

As for travel, right now I'm in love with Europe. I've been there three times in the last three years and want to make going there an annual thing. When I'm abroad is when I usually check out museums.

When I'm travelling I do. When friends from other countries come to visit I often take them to a museum in Amsterdam. I like Picasso, Dali and Van Gogh especially, but many others too.

There aren't really museums around here nor galleries, nor theaters. It's a nightmare to live in this place. It really is.
