Carrielee, I have TMJ also. There is a lot of controversy around it. A nightguard mouthpiece will help. So will reducing stress. When you get tense you probably clench your teeth, which adds a lot of stress to the jaw joint. I am in braces partially due to TMJ. I wear 3 rubberbands that are helping realign my bite, which helps my joint. I too have been advised not to open too wide or eat hard things. Surgery does not always work. If you are considering it get at least 3 opinions.

You might seriously consider seeing an orthodontist for an opinion on your situation.

Note* One thing that helps me is to rub it. And when it is sore I don't eat anything that requires a lot of chewing and I try really hard to relax my face. I do this for a couple of days and the pain and popping will minimalize quite a bit. They also have nightguards at the drug store that you might want to try before having a custom one made smile

omg I might have that too. My jaw used to lock open and only after some massaging would it close. Now it only opens about 3/4 of what it used to and clicks too.

Thanks Berry. My dentist said that there are specialists but they will tell me to do the same things more or less. She said to put hot compresses on it for 20 mins at a time. And I think I'll try the pharmacy mouth guards first. I'd rather spend $300 on clothes than a piece of plastic for my mouth!

Wow, this is horrible.

It makes me realize how fortunate I am to have a normal, non-deformed, healthy, unfreakish jaw and not some monstrosity attached to my face that is good for nothing except eating jello and drinking through a straw.

Good luck with that, Carrie. hug

I've gone through the same thing as Berry over approx. 3yrs. The good thing is I use to have wicked headaches and now I rarely have any. Oh... and now I have a nice smile!
