Does Anyone Feed Neighborhood Outdoor Animals? Since I am not allowed to have any pets in my rental and I love pets I decided to start putting Bread, Salad, Nuts and Fruits and cakes outside in my lawn and guess what? I now have birds, squirills a chipmunk and I saw a Racoon and Possum just a few minutes ago. They are so Cute with their faces and tails and they scamper around, but I was also kinda Scared they were gonna come on my porch. Food does attract all kinds of animals and well I wanted to see what would happen. Now, I will continue so that they don't have to hunt around. I love Animals:-D

I am fairly anti-animal feeding
Not because I don't want to or don't like animals, but I don't think it's good for them. I think wild animals should fear people and stay away for their own good.
When they lose their fear and start to hang around neighborhoods and scaring people, it's bound to mean dead animals.
Also, they can become really annoying when they learn that people will give them food My Legacy

doesn't it also change migratory habits? Some birds don't leave anymore here because why should they bother!!! That last bird I posted a photo of has the ugliest sounding call of any bird I've heard, it's also a native bird and loves our garden because we have so many native plants (encouraged by our local council) but I wouldn't mind ripping out those shrubs so I can sleep beyond 4am on a summer morning

Bird song is highly over-rated. It's okay from a distance to hear multiple birds, but when I hear any single bird it sounds like a crazy person with a whistle or some computer alarm [Edited 6/29/11 23:22pm] My Legacy

I feed the ducks in the park. The ibis in the city seem to like french fries and lettuce. Sometimes I will throw some at the feet of people taking a photo to watch an ibis swoop in and scare them. But only if I am in a playful mood.

I dont feed anyone but the kids.
These damn squirrels around here are so bold, they take shit outta your hand. And I had a bird fly into my car and take a french fry from me. (He got it because I was flailing around screaming....LOL)
The other animals around here eat each other so I just watch........ Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Yes, a pigeon, named it Bob. I have 3 cats but they go good together. Could be because my cats are pretty lazy and spoiled, they don't even get up when their is a mouse in the house But Bob sits in my garden now and than, waiting to get something

Some bird calls are okay, but I HATE crows and blue jay calls. They always sound so bossy and nasty. That's one bird call that I would not miss if I never heard it again. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

there's an injured cat who hung around my building for a while so i decided to feed it and see if it would get back on it's feet.
i could have called animal rescue but they would have to take it with them and since it's a stray i was just affraid they'd have it put down.
so i thought i'd give the cat a fair chance and feed it so that it wouldn't have to put any energy in trying to catch dinner.
and over the last 2 months it's made a good recovery. it used to walk kind of wonky and fall over a lot so i thought it might have been hit by a car but then i noticed that it also ate very strangely and kind of moved as if it had some sort of parkinsons. so i figured she probably had a stroke but since she or he is still quite young, they seem to be recovering pretty quickly and pretty well.
aaaaanywho. so now, every night at about 11:30 before i go to bed i go down into the parkinglot, where it is always waiting underneath my car. then i feed it some canned catfood and some dry food or sometimes some lunchmeat or whatever i've got left over.
i feed it on a little piece of lawn with a tree that's next to the parkinglot and since about 2 weeks, a hedge hog has been looking at this and decided he wanted in on the action. so now they eat together. it's really rather special to see that cat and the hedgehog share the dry catfood
two days ago, i had a lot of chicken left over and just gave that to the cat and as i stood a few yards away and watched the cat enjoy it's meal, suddenly i felt something on my foot (i was wearing slipper) and there was the hedge hog (who's about the size of a football, he's a giant), just brushing my foot and looking up at me.
i never knew they could be so damn clever. i mean, just a hedge hog, lol, and he's scooting me like "hey man, no dry catfood tonight? what's up?"
so fcuz, i then gave them an assortment of cat and dog kibble and they were happily munching away again. i should really take some pics of that one of these nights.
the only one who thinks this whole situation sucks badly, is my dog, who's in a fowl mood when he sees me walking out with food.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

i feed them up at our cabin, where it's truly wild and where other people can't harm the little wld creatures.
with the exception of birds, i don't feed animals in the city. that's because in the city, most folks regard raccoons, possums, skunks, coyotes, crows, etc. as 'varmints' and either run them down in their cars or try to poison or trap them.

Also, they can become really annoying when they learn that people will give them food I learned to stop once a squirrel was attempting to follow me into the house. Even when I turned on it and said no, it didn't run off just simply waited for me to continue to lead the way, so I ran and left it.

Yeah... I am anti-feeding wild animals... especially after someone I knew ended up with a wild raccoon in bed with him one night. terrifying.

Birds are a bit different, I guess, especially if the food is in a feeder, not coming from a person.
But I have seen geese get pretty aggressive toward people with leftovers! My Legacy

No. It's a nice idea but as much I love all animals I know others don't and I don't want to risk them being hurt by hanging around the neighbourhood looking for humans to feed them.
If an animal is in trouble, I'm there to help...otherwise they do just find on their own.

My grandpa has a lot of bird feeders, but what he's done that actually helps them more was he got permission from neighbors to put up bird houses that allowed certain species that lost their trees due to farming to come back.
So the birds are there but you don't have to have contact with them
We put up a bird house at our place too and it's pretty cute to see a couple move in, hear the eggs hatch, and see the parents coax the little ones out. My Legacy

Outside of the occasional bird feeder, no. Of course, all that wander around where I live are mostly cats. I don't like having feral cats staging major battles on my porches which can get ugly, I don't encourage them to hang around. Having birds hanging around a lot doesn't help either.

No i don't, the squirrels out here are fat as hell and look like they could stand a few less chestnuts or whatever, and the geese shit a-plenty so I think they don't need me to feed them. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

them thangs are a pain in the ass.... it's a rodent. ran over one last week, he kinda misjudge his speed crossing the street, can't say I was upset about it.
But no I don't feed outdoor animals, they are on their own.
